Mistrial Is Another Blow To US Coup In Venezuela; Our Work Continues

Last week, we along with Adrienne Pine and David Paul were unsuccessfully prosecuted by the Trump administration for our protection of the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC from April 10 to May 16, 2019.  The jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision and so we remain innocent of the charge of interfering with the protective functions of the US Department of State. The judge declared a mistrial. It was a partial victory and we greatly appreciate the jurors who were able to see through the cloud of misinformation in the courtroom and vote to acquit us. The day our trial started, Juan Guaido returned to Venezuela where he was harassed and physically assaulted by protesters. He is unable to muster support at home even from the opposition.

Mistrial In Trump Biased Prosecution Against Venezuelan Embassy Protectors Is Win For Sovereignty

A hung jury in the Donald Trump administration’s case against activists who were arrested protecting Venezuela’s internationally recognized embassy in Washington, DC is being heralded as a major win for sovereignty, amid the US government’s floundering coup attempt against the Chavista government in Caracas. On February 14, a jury of 12 DC residents were deadlocked over the issue of the embassy defenders, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial — in a blow to the federal government and to a judicial system that had stacked the odds against them.

Guaido’s Failed Foreign Tour Ends With A Flop

Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself the president of Venezuela a year ago but despite multiple coup attempts, he never took power and his support there rapidly disappeared. Now, with his foreign tour concluding, Guaidó's support is shrinking around the world as well. Rather than looking presidential, he appears clownish. Rather than developing new plans to try to topple President Maduro, he is left without any concrete promises from European governments, which have been more resistant than the United States toward imposing more sanctions on Venezuela as Guaidó was requesting. Despite his failures, according to US law, as long as President Trump recognizes him as the President of Venezuela then the courts will go along with the charade. Venezuelan Opposition Rejects Juan Guaido’s Leadership

Venezuelan parliamentarians declared themselves in opposition against Guaidó for having used the presidency of the parliament as a personal project to enrich himself. The Venezuelan opposition stated on Sunday that they would not be seeking the reelection of the self-proclaimed president Juan Guaidó. According to their statement, the opposition is choosing to move forward without Guaido, as his corruption and failures have worsened their cause. The parliamentarians declared themselves in revolt against Guaidó for having used the presidency of the parliament as a personal project to enrich himself.

This article is meant to help identify warning signs and hopefully lower the number of American progressives who fall for the same psyops techniques that were used against Honduras, Paraguay, Brazil, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Bolivia during recent US-supported coups and coup attempts in those countries. Embassy Protectors Are Being Denied Their Right To A Fair Trial

Judge Beryl A. Howell, the chief judge of the US District Court, denied the discovery motions requested by the four embassy protectors who were arrested on May 16 after staying in the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, DC for 37 days to prevent it from being handed over to coup-leaders in violation of the Vienna Convention. This denial will severely restrict the scope of the trial, currently scheduled for February 11, 2020, of Adrienne Pine, David Paul, Margaret Flowers, and Kevin Zeese. They face federal charges punishable by up to a year in prison, a $100,000 fine each and restitution to the government for police time and damages. Judge Howell's ruling will result in a farcical trial where the jury will not be allowed to consider the contentious legality of the Trump administration’s recognition of the leadership of the coup in Venezuela, and thus the legal basis of the charges the defenders are facing.

Venezuela Stops Terrorist Plot Attack-Plan On Military Barracks

Venezuelan Communication Minister, Jorge Rodriguez, revealed Saturday details of a terrorist operation that was intended to be perpetrated against the Gran Mariscal Sucre Headquarters and the Zonal Command No. 53 of the Bolivarian National Guard in the state of Sucre. This operation was carried out by members of the right-wing party, ‘Voluntad Popular,’ led by Leopoldo Lopez and Juan Guaido, and organized by the deputies of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Janet Fermin and Fernando Orozco. "After a terrorist operation Leopoldo Lopez and Juan Guaido wanted to enter weapons from Colombian territory to storm Venezuelan military bases," Rodriguez denounced.

US corporate media have been disproportionately interested in only one: the Hong Kong protests. As FAIR argued previously (FAIR.org, 10/26/19), this disparity in coverage can largely be explained by understanding who is protesting and what they are protesting against. The unrest in Hong Kong flared up in March in response to a proposed extradition treaty between the island city, the Chinese central government and Taiwan, which many residents feared would be used by Beijing authorities to arrest and persecute opponents of the Chinese state. Thus, the target of Hong Kong’s protesting is an official enemy of the US, hence the extent and favorability of the coverage.

The US government has dropped its bogus charge of “simple assault” against journalist Max Blumenthal, after having him arrested on a 5-month-old warrant and jailed for nearly two days. The Grayzone has learned that Secret Service call logs recorded during the alleged incident were either not kept or destroyed. The mysteriously missing evidence included print documents and radio recordings that may have exposed collusion between Secret Service officers operating under the auspices of the US State Department and violent right-wing hooligans in an operation to besiege peace activists stationed inside Venezuela’s embassy in Washington, DC.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro on Friday announced that the Bolivarian Army is on "alert" for a suspected attack from Colombia. "All of the National Bolivarian Armed Forces (FANB) should be on alert. I have first-hand information of a set of provocations for armed conflict at the Colombian-Venezuelan border, so as to divert attention from the popular Colombian rebellion against Ivan Duque," Maduro said. "I speak out against it and I'm telling the FANB to be ready to defend Venezuela's sovereignty and right to peace... Be ready."

Western Media Excited About ‘New Iran Revolution’, But Reality Is Different

Data from two foreign polls tell a very different story about protests in Iran. The economy is tough, but a majority of Iranians back their government's security initiatives and reject domestic upheaval. In terms of support for their leaders, a majority of Iranians view favorably the IRGC’s Soleimani (82%), followed by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif (67%) and Judiciary Head Ebrahim Raisi (64%), which covers an unexpectedly broad spectrum of political viewpoints in the country. In light of these numbers, it is fair to say that there is no “second revolution” on Iran’s horizon, nor any kind of significant rupture between government and populace on a whole host of key political, economic and security issues. Foreign commentators can spin events in Iran all they want, but so far Iranians have chosen security and stability over upheaval every time.

The anti-Morales and anti-MAS mobilizations were orchestrated by the coup’s shock troops provided by various armed fascist groups. They met with little or no resistance. Their central leader was Luis Fernando Camacho, who soon emerged as a key player in the coup. Camacho grew up in the Santa Cruz Youth Union, [UJC in its Spanish abbreviation] a fascist paramilitary group notorious for racist violence against indigenous peoples, assaults, and assassination plots against Morales and other MAS leaders. The group has strong ties to fascist groups in Europe and strong links to the CIA.

The Bolivian tragedy eloquently teaches us several lessons that our people and grassroots social and political forces must learn and permanently etch into our consciences. Very briefly, and while events are unfolding, I will list some of them as a prelude to a more detailed discussion later. They sowed terror in the population with the complicity of the police and the military. This forced Evo to resign. Just like in the manuals. Will we ever learn these lessons?
