Politicians Celebrate “World Press Freedom Day” As Julian Assange Languishes In Prison

May 3 is World Press Freedom Day, sponsored annually by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO holds the event, it avows, to celebrate “the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.” Those claims are hollow and duplicitous, as the nge remains locked up in a high-security prison in London and faces the threat of rendition to the US. Why?

What’s Really Behind Julian Assange’s Arrest

The recent arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has provoked a wide spectrum of responses in the media, but many journalists seem to recognize the Trump administration’s attack on the publisher as setting a dangerous precedent for freedom of the press. Many reports have focused on what Truthdig Editor in Chief Robert Scheer deems a mischaracterization of Assange’s character that is used to justify a heinous persecution and bury the fact that Assange, in his publishing of news, has acted much like any newspaper.

The Slandering Of Assange Reveals The Sociopathic Workings Of The Empire’s Propaganda Machine

Amid the attempted prosecution of Julian Assange, the world is in a surreal moment where the truth has been turned on its head. A groupthink has emerged which collectively rejects history and facts so it can stick with the narrative that Assange deserves his persecution. As always, it’s ambiguous whether all the propagandists believe their own lies, and it doesn’t matter whether they do; they’re doing what the centers of power require of them, which is to reinforce the official story.

Chelsea Manning’s Appeal Rejected By 4th Circuit Court Of Appeals

Chelsea Manning is well known for the Collateral Murder video published by Wikileaks seen here. She also disclosed thousands of diplomatic cables through Wikileaks. She spent 7 years in prison after being convicted under the ancient espionage act. Her sentence was commuted by Barrack Obama in 2017. The question being raised is if the only charge against Assange has been revealed, why is Manning still in jail? Assange was arrested 11 days ago in the Ecuadorian embassy in London after the ambassador opened the doors and let police in. Immediately after Assange’s arrest, the US issued an extradition warrant.

SEP (Australia) To Hold Election Rally And Meetings In Defence Of Assange

As part of its campaign in the federal election, the Socialist Equality Party (Australia) is holding a rally and meetings demanding freedom for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and for Chelsea Manning, the courageous whistleblower who has been detained by the Trump administration for more than five weeks. The illegal arrest of Assange, by British police in London’s Ecuador embassy on April 11, is a major attack on the democratic rights of the working class. It is aimed at facilitating Assange’s extradition to the US, where he will face concocted charges over WikiLeaks exposures of US war crimes, mass surveillance operations and diplomatic intrigues.

Before Ousting Assange, Moreno Government Spied On The Journalist For Over A Year

LONDON — Like the proverbial “shot heard round the world,” the U.K.’s arrest and imprisonment of publisher and journalist Julian Assange officially signaled the Western world’s war on a free press. The Australian who founded WikiLeaks, but stepped down as editor-in-chief last year, was ousted from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London last week after Ecuador President Lenin Moreno revoked his political asylum, and arrested by the U.K.’s Metropolitan Police. He was seen holding a copy of Gore Vidal: History of the National Security State while men dressed in suits — perhaps in a futile effort to make the arrest look a bit less repugnant — dragged the publisher out, handcuffed and resisting.

“I Was The CIA Director – We Lied, We Cheated, We Stole”

Former CIA director and now Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has long accused WikiLeaks of being a “non-state hostile intelligence agency”, usually manipulated by Russia. Since Pompeo first made this claim as CIA Director in April 2017, countless major US news sources from NPR to CNN to the Washington Post have uncritically repeated the line, smearing Julian Assange and WikiLeaks as "Russian agents," and more broadly using the narrative to stifle independent journalism and government whistleblowers.

Julian Assange: Call for International Days of Action May 1 and May 2

We urge people to take action at British embassies in the United States, at US Department of Justice and US Attorney's offices and other appropriate locations on May 1 and 2 and if you are in London to be at the Westminster Court for the hearing.  On May 2, the preliminary hearing will be held in London on the extradition proceedings. It is important for the movement seeking to Free Julian Assange be highly visible in expressing our opposition to the political persecution of a publisher who has reported some of the most important stories of this century and has created a democratized media that empowers people and breaks the stranglehold of corporate domination.

The WikiLeaks Gaps In The Mueller Report

As official Washington pores over the Gospel According to Saint Robert, an all-important fact about the Mueller report has gotten lost in the shuffle.  Just as the Christian gospels were filled with holes, the latest version is too – particularly with regard to WikiLeaks and Julian Assange. The five pages that the special prosecutor’s report devotes to WikiLeaks are essentially lifted from Mueller’s indictment last July of 12 members of the Russian military intelligence agency known as the GRU. All of which is manna from heaven for corporate news outlets eager to pile on Assange, now behind bars in London.

US Preparing More Charges Against Julian Assange

US federal prosecutors confirmed there is an “ongoing criminal investigation” of Julian Assange, the 47-year-old founder of WikiLeaks. Prosecutors also indicated “affiliates” of Assange are under investigation, this according to another newly unsealed document. According to the CNN report, at least one document related to this investigation has been withheld from the public due to “ongoing activity.” The revelation, CNN reported, “confirms CNN and other news outlets’ reporting in recent days that WikiLeaks is connected to at least one probe that could result in more criminal charges.”

Cuban Five Hero Declares His Solidarity With Julian Assange

There is precedence when the media has stepped up and revealed secrets publicly that altered the course of history. These are those moments when released information is so significant that once out it cannot be swept back under the rug; no matter that it has destroyed political careers, personalities or even damaged powerful political parties. In this age social media, for the most part, is now the motor force to spread undeniable truths or lies.

Barr Exonerates Wikileaks In Press Conference Regarding Mueller Report

In a Press Conference today about the Mueller Report on Russian collusion, AG William Barr not only announced Trump was not guilty but made an incredible statement regarding Wikileaks’ innocence. Included in the 20 minute presser was this statement according to Joe Lauria: “US Attorney General calls @wikileaks a “publisher.” Barr: “Under applicable law, publication of these types of materials would not be criminal unless the publisher also participated in the underlying hacking conspiracy.”

If Your Country Were Committing War Crimes Would You Want To Know?

A close reading of both the indictment and the criminal complaint against Assange show that journalism is indeed being criminalized. Assange is accused merely of trying to help Chelsea Manning, his source, to hide her identity, not hack into a computer Manning already had legal access to, as the indictment and complaint make plain. It was the administration Clinton belonged to that decided, with the exact same evidence, not to indict Assange because it crossed the red line into making journalism a crime.

Unsealed Affidavit Demonstrates US Seeking To Prosecute Assange For His Journalism

An affidavit unsealed by US prosecutors on Monday has underscored the unlawful character of the Trump administration’s request that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange be extradited to the US in the wake of his illegal expulsion from Ecuador’s London embassy and arrest by the British police last Thursday. The affidavit was made by Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) special agent Megan Brown on December 21, 2017, in support of two charges which had been secretly filed against Assange, under her name.

Julian And Martin: Reflections On The Arrest Of Assange

Will someone please explain to me why Martin Luther King, Jr. is considered a hero for violating laws sustaining the system of racial discrimination, while Julian Assange is considered a villain for violating laws sustaining the system of imperial war? Democratic Party bigwigs are celebrating the arrest of the Wikileaks founder in London and the request of Donald Trump’s Justice Department for his extradition to the U.S. According to Senators Chuck Schumer, Mark Warner, and Joe Manchin – and, of course, ex-Senator Hilary Clinton – Assange deserves to be punished severely for plotting with Chelsea Manning...
