Ensuring People In The US Can Hear From A Palestinian Leader Of BDS

I awakened early Wednesday to listen to a voicemail message from Omar Barghouti, a leading member of the Palestinian movement to Boycott, Divest, and Sanction (BDS) Israel. In the message, Omar told me that he was at Ben Gurion Airport and despite holding a valid US visa and a boarding pass for his flight to Washington, D.C., the airline would not let him board the plane. He was informed that American immigration officials had notified the airline that he was being barred from entry into the US.

US Denies Entry To BDS Cofounder Omar Barghouti

Washington, DC - A prominent Palestinian human rights activist and cofounder of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was denied entry to the United States on Wednesday, despite holding valid travel documents. Omar Barghouti was travelling to the US on the invitation of Arab American Institute (AAI) in Washington to speak at New York University's DC campus. Upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Barghouti was told by airline staff that the US Consulate in the city was directed by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to deny him travelling to the US due to an "immigration matter".

Letter In Support Of Swarthmore SJP Students, Their BDS Campaign, And All Students Fighting For A Just World

We, the undersigned, affirm our unequivocal support for Swarthmore Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and their Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign at Swarthmore College. This past month, student organizers at Swarthmore have faced targeted online harassment from right-wing social media accounts for their work in solidarity with Palestine. This harassment is not happening in isolation and is no accident. Rather, it is part of a deliberate strategy we see on campuses across the country to intimidate and silence those who organize in support of Palestinian lives and dignity.

Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against BDS Supporters

In the court’s 20-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras wrote that the pro-Israeli group had “danced around key issues” and was unable to show that they had suffered enough monetary damages to warrant a federal case. Pro-Israeli groups have suffered a major defeat in a US court after a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against the American Studies Association’s (ASA) resolution to endorse the call to boycott Israeli academic institutions as part of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Twitter Up In Arms After Trudeau Says He’ll ‘Continue To Condemn BDS’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has doubled down on his condemnation of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel in comments that have drawn the ire of Twitter users. Speaking at a town hall meeting at Brock University in St. Catharines on Tuesday, Trudeau fielded a question about his previous comments about BDS, with strong confirmation of his support for Israel.

Maryland Man Sues Over Order Prohibiting Support For BDS

A former Maryland state representative has filed a civil rights lawsuit against Gov. Larry Hogan and Attorney General Brian Frosh, taking aim at an executive order denying government contracts to businesses that boycott Israel. The suit, filed Wednesday in federal court by Syed Saqib Ali, alleges that the Maryland leaders violated his First and 14th Amendment rights when Hogan signed an executive order in October 2017 requiring all state contractors to promise they will not boycott Israel. “We are confident that our executive order is completely consistent with the First Amendment and will be upheld in court,”...

18 Highlights Of BDS Impact In 2018

Here are 18 highlights of direct and indirect BDS impact from 2018. We celebrate the extraordinary strides that the BDS movement for Palestinian rights has made with your support. We are exposing Israel’s crimes and apartheid policies and building pressure to end them.

Senate’s First Bill: Protect Israel From BDS

WHEN EACH NEW Congress is gaveled into session, the chambers attach symbolic importance to the first piece of legislation to be considered. For that reason, it bears the lofty designation of H.R.1 in the House and S.1 in the Senate. In the newly controlled Democratic House, H.R.1 — meant to signal the new majority’s priorities — is an anti-corruption bill that combines election and campaign finance reform, strengthening of voting rights, and matching public funds for small-dollar candidates. In the 2017 Senate, the GOP-controlled S.1 was a bill, called the “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,” that, among other provisions, cut various forms of corporate taxes.

ADL Thought Anti-BDS Laws Are ‘Unconstitutional,’ Will Create Antisemitism – Backed It Anyways

A leaked internal memo reveals the Anti-Defamation League thought "anti-BDS" laws making it illegal to boycott Israel were "unconstitutional" and would be "harmful to the Jewish community" and give "the appearance that the Jewish community exercises undue influence in government," but they backed them anyways, according to a bombshell new report from the Jewish Daily Forward.

Major BDS Victories In 2018

Four decades ago, in 1977, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) named Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Since then, every year on this day the U.N., different countries, rights groups, and activists express their solidarity with Palestine. Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, the president of the 73rd Session of UNGA wrote on Twitter, "Let us demonstrate our commitment to the Palestinian people by strengthening multilateralism and making the @UN work for all people - For human rights, peace and security and sustainable development.”

Somali-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Backs BDS Amid Facing Anti-Semitism Smear Campaign

Longtime supporter of Palestine Ilhan Omar has taken her passion to Congress and backed the BDS movement. The first Somali-American congresswoman Ilhan Omar has backed the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement after a large attempt to smear her as an anti-Semite for her Palestine activism. “Ilhan believes in and supports the BDS movement, and has fought to make sure people’s right to support it isn’t criminalised. She does however, have reservations on the effectiveness of the movement in accomplishing a lasting solution,” her office told Muslim Girl on Sunday. This comes after months of being attacked online for her support for Palestine, with many trying to smear her as an anti-Semite.

University Of Michigan Faces Criticism After Reprimanding Pro-BDS Professor

The University of Michigan has faced an eruption of protests in recent days after reprimanding a professor, who refused to write a recommendation letter for a student wanting to study in Israel. The professor had cited the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement for the refusal. John Cheney-Lippold, an associate professor of American culture, had been reprimanded by the university for refusing to write the letter of recommendation earlier this month. Since then, he has received support and messages of solidarity from students of the university, according to Middle East Eye. Students hand-delivered a letter to the office of Mark Schlissel, the president of the university, condemning the institution for its action against the professor.

Second Recommendation Letter Withdrawn By Michigan University Instructor, Citing BDS

A University of Michigan instructor went back on her commitment to provide a letter of recommendation for a student after finding out the student was going to Israel for a study abroad program. This news went unreported unlike the first incident of a similar nature, as claimed by Washington Post. In this second incident, Jake Secker, a 20-year-old junior from Great Neck, N.Y., majoring in Economics and minoring in Entrepreneurship, sought a reference from a teaching assistant, known at Michigan as a graduate student instructor, or GSI. Lucy Peterson, the GSI, initially agreed to give a recommendation letter but when Secker told her that he was applying to Tel Aviv University, Peterson withdrew her commitment.

Court Blocks Arizona Law Aimed At Anti-Israel Boycotts

Phoenix, AZ (Sept. 27, 2018) - A federal court today blocked an Arizona law that requires state contractors to certify that they will not boycott Israel, finding that the law likely violates state contractors’ free speech rights under the First Amendment. “A restriction of one’s ability to participate in collective calls to oppose Israel unquestionably burdens the protected expression of companies wishing to engage in such a boycott,” U.S. District Court Judge Diane J. Humetewa wrote in today’s order blocking the law.

BDS: How A Controversial Non-Violent Movement Has Transformed The Israeli-Palestinian Debate

The movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel – known as BDS – has been driving the world a little bit mad. Since its founding 13 years ago, it has acquired nearly as many enemies as the Israelis and Palestinians combined. It has hindered the efforts of Arab states to fully break their own decades-old boycott in pursuit of increasingly overt cooperation with Israel. It has shamed the Palestinian Authority government in Ramallah by denouncing its security and economic collaboration with Israel’s army and military administration. It has annoyed the Palestine Liberation Organization by encroaching on its position as the internationally recognised advocate and representative of Palestinians worldwide.
