Ten LGBTQ News Stories The Mainstream Media Ignored In 2015

By Toshio Meronek for Truthout - If the mainstream media has its way, 2015 will be remembered as the year gay marriage (and divorce) became legal in the United States; Caitlyn Jenner told us what being a trans woman was really about (famously declaring the "hardest part about being a woman is figuring out what to wear"); and the benevolent tech titans at Facebook made us a rainbow filter for our profile pics (while it continued to repress queer and trans people's ability to use their preferred names). But so much more happened in the last 12 months. Let's talk about the important battles won, and those that we're still fighting, and the people we've lost, and all those who have survived against the odds.

Harvard Medical: Police Killings Public Health Epidemic

By Dylan Sevett for US Uncut - Harvard researchers have called on US Public Health Agencies to consider police killings and police deaths public health issues. With that request, researches are also echoing numerous activists who are urging them to begin tracking the number of people killed by police. The proposal was inspired by a year of continuous protests and public pressure from the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which stemmed from the murder of unarmed Michael Brown on August 9, 2014, and the consistent police murders and protests that have happened since.

Why Did The Washington Post Try To Mislead On Police Killings?

By Jim Naureckas for FAIR - Concerned that official records undercount the number of people shot and killed by police in the United States every year, theWashington Post(12/26/15) attempted to compile a list of every fatal police shooting in 2015. The paper found nearly a thousand such cases—more than twice as many as the FBI reports in a typical year. The Post‘s project—which corroborates a similar tally conducted by the BritishGuardian (6/9/15)—is a journalistic accomplishment, as well as an achievement of the Black Lives Matter movement, which has worked to call attention to police violence in the wake of the killing of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014.

Families Of 2 Fatally Shot Call For Police To Improve Interaction

Patrick M. O'Connell and Tony Briscoe for The Chicago Tribune - Family members of two people killed by Chicago police during a weekend shooting said Sunday they are outraged and heartbroken by their loved ones' deaths, joining activists to call for sweeping changes in the way officers interact with black residents throughout the city. "Police are supposed to serve us and protect us, and instead they kill us," said Janet Cooksey, whose 19-year-old son, Quintonio LeGrier, was shot and killed early Saturday when police were called to his father's house in the West Garfield Park neighborhood for a domestic disturbance. "What's wrong with this picture?"

I ‘Utterly Reject’ That Only Some Cops Are Bad

Quentin Tarantino continues to stand by anti-police comments he made earlier this fall in a new interview, saying he “completely rejects” the “bad apples” argument that only a small number of police officers behave inappropriately on the job. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly on Monday (and in an interview with Howard Sternlast week), the Hateful Eight director put the blame for some instances of police brutality on the “institutional racism” of the profession. “I completely and utterly reject the bad apples argument,” the director told EW. “Chicago just got caught with their pants down in a way that can’t be denied. But I completely and utterly reject the ‘few bad apples’ argument.

Mumia Commentary On The Killing Of Tamir Rice

By Mumia Abu Jamal for Prison Nation on Free Speech Radio: Cleveland officials announce no charges to be files in the police killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. There is something shattering about the death, the killing, of a child. When a child dies the natural order is torn, the stars weep and the earth quakes. We have become so accustomed to this system we suppose it is natural instead of a human imposition. Politicians in the pocket of so called police unions bow before bags of silver and blink away the death of a child – especially if a black child. This should inspire movements worldwide to fight like never before. For something vile has happened before our eyes. A child has been killed, and in America – because it’s a black child – it means next to nothing.

Black Lives Matter Denounces US Intervention In VZ

By Opal Tometi for Black Agenda Report - The co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Network and Executive Director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration warns that the recent electoral victory of U.S.-backed counter revolutionary parties in Venezuela endangers the country’s African-descended population. The letter denounces “corporate media lies about electoral corruption voiced by Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sander’s defamation of late President Hugo Chavez labeling him a dictator.” “We reject any action the U.S. puts forward to plunder Venezuelan natural resources, occupy the country and incite violence.” Black North American Solidarity Statement with the Venezuelan People

Mall Of America Protest A “Decoy” Says Black Lives Matter

By Michael Mcintee for the Uptake. Black Lives Matter organizers say their announced protest at the Mall of America was a “planned diversion” and a “decoy.” Their real goal was the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport. Protesters did show up at the nation’s largest shopping mall Wednesday afternoon, but they quickly left and boarded trains for a quick trip to the nearby MSP airport where they blocked traffic and caused delays at both of the airports As proof that the airport action was planned and not just an adlib, Black Lives Matter points to a tweet with a video showing protesters blocking a road at MSP airport. The group says the 2:05pm timestamp proves it had protesters in place at the airport while others were still on the train. The protest at the mall began around 1:30pm.

#BlackLivesMatter Refuses To Back Down To Mall Of America

By Staff of The Washington Post - The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., has asked a court to keep Black Lives Matter activists from holding a protest at the massive shopping center later this week and has proposed a restraining order that would prohibit demonstrators from discussing their plans on social media. The Minneapolis chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement announced through its Facebook page on Monday morning that the Mall of America — the largest shopping mall in the United States — has filed aproposal that would not only ensure activists are barred from holding a protest on December 23, but would require organizers to publicly condemn their plans.

Grand Jury Does Not Indict Anyone For Sandra Bland’s Jailhouse Death

By Staff for The Huffington Post - HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — A grand jury has decided no felony crime was committed by the sheriff's office or jailers in the treatment of a black woman who died in a Southeast Texas county jail last summer. But prosecutor Darrell Jordan said the Waller County grand jury reached no decision on whether the trooper who arrested 28-year-old Sandra Bland should face charges. The Chicago-area woman was pulled over July 10 by a Texas state trooper for making an improper lane change. Dashcam video showed their interaction quickly became confrontational and she was arrested for assault.

Newsletter: An Opening For People Power

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. The reality that corporatism cannot deal with the urgent problems faced in the US and around the world is becoming more obvious. People power is growing as more see that the current system is unable to operate in a functional way. People power is having an impact, forcing the country to listen. How do we create the transformation we need? The UN climate talks, COP21, are now recognized widely as a failure, at best a framework to be filled at a later date. Why were countries unable to confront climate change? The dominant economic and political power in the world is the United States. We are ruled by corporate power which is corrupted by Big Energy and as a result the US ensured a bad agreement.

Join #DropTheCharges Campaign For Two Students In SC

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - A 16-year-old girl known as Shakara was placed in a chokehold, flipped over in her seat, then dragged and thrown across her classroom before being handcuffed by a South Carolina school officer in October. Video footage of the incident prompted the FBI and the Department of Justice to look into the incident and, after the Richland County Sheriff's Department conducted a 48-hour investigation into his conduct, Officer Ben Fields was fired. But the charges filed against Shakara and Niya Kenny, a classmate arrested for filming the incident, still stand.
