But so much more happened in the last 12 months. Let's talk about the important battles won, and those that we're still fighting, and the people we've lost, and all those who have survived against the odds.

Harvard Medical: Police Killings Public Health Epidemic

With that request, researches are also echoing numerous activists who are urging them to begin tracking the number of people killed by police. The proposal was inspired by a year of continuous protests and public pressure from the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which stemmed from the murder of unarmed Michael Brown on August 9, 2014, and the consistent police murders and protests that have happened since.

The paper found nearly a thousand such cases—more than twice as many as the FBI reports in a typical year. The Post‘s project—which corroborates a similar tally conducted by the BritishGuardian (6/9/15)—is a journalistic accomplishment, as well as an achievement of the Black Lives Matter movement, which has worked to call attention to police violence in the wake of the killing of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014.

"Police are supposed to serve us and protect us, and instead they kill us," said Janet Cooksey, whose 19-year-old son, Quintonio LeGrier, was shot and killed early Saturday when police were called to his father's house in the West Garfield Park neighborhood for a domestic disturbance. "What's wrong with this picture?"

Quentin Tarantino continues to stand by anti-police comments he made earlier this fall in a new interview, saying he “completely rejects” the “bad apples” argument that only a small number of police officers behave inappropriately on the job. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly on Monday (and in an interview with Howard Sternlast week), the Hateful Eight director put the blame for some instances of police brutality on the “institutional racism” of the profession. “I completely and utterly reject the bad apples argument,” the director told EW. “Chicago just got caught with their pants down in a way that can’t be denied. But I completely and utterly reject the ‘few bad apples’ argument.

There is something shattering about the death, the killing, of a child. When a child dies the natural order is torn, the stars weep and the earth quakes. Politicians in the pocket of so called police unions bow before bags of silver and blink away the death of a child – especially if a black child. Mall Of America Protest A “Decoy” Says Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter organizers say their announced protest at the Mall of America was a “planned diversion” and a “decoy.” Their real goal was the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport. Protesters did show up at the nation’s largest shopping mall Wednesday afternoon, but they quickly left and boarded trains for a quick trip to the nearby MSP airport where they blocked traffic and caused delays at both of the airports As proof that the airport action was planned and not just an adlib, Black Lives Matter points to a tweet with a video showing protesters blocking a road at MSP airport. The group says the 2:05pm timestamp proves it had protesters in place at the airport while others were still on the train. The protest at the mall began around 1:30pm.

Black Lives Matter Minnesota raised its voice in multiple locations December 23rd, disrupting shopping, the metro system and the airport to protest the November killing of Jamar Clark, a black man by Minneapolis police. Their demands: -#ReleaseTheTapes of his killing -Prosecute the police involved without a grand jury by a special prosecutor -Federal domestic terrorism charges against white supremacists who shot 5 protestors -Institute a safety plan to protect our communities from Police violence -Disinvest from police and reinvest in Black futures There was litigation by Mall of America, which feared a repeat of last year's Black Lives Matter protest. While media reports were confused the court did not block a protest at Mall of America.

By Staff of The Washington Post - The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., has asked a court to keep Black Lives Matter activists from holding a protest at the massive shopping center later this week and has proposed a restraining order that would prohibit demonstrators from discussing their plans on social media. The Minneapolis chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement announced through its Facebook page on Monday morning that the Mall of America — the largest shopping mall in the United States — has filed aproposal that would not only ensure activists are barred from holding a protest on December 23, but would require organizers to publicly condemn their plans.

But prosecutor Darrell Jordan said the Waller County grand jury reached no decision on whether the trooper who arrested 28-year-old Sandra Bland should face charges. The Chicago-area woman was pulled over July 10 by a Texas state trooper for making an improper lane change. Dashcam video showed their interaction quickly became confrontational and she was arrested for assault.

It was an event featuring activists on the imperative nature of racial justice. The event took place at the Carl A. Fields Center for Cultural Understanding and Equality at Princeton University, and was hosted in partnership with Not in Our Town - Princeton and the Princeton University Muslim Life Program. The entire preparation process was coordinated by redefy (an internationally recognized teen organization committed to defying stereotypes/redefining perspectives positively). The effort was spearheaded by Nick Jain (VP of Event Planning), Nicole Hartley (Head Officer of Event Planning), and Ziad Ahmed (Founder and President) who are all Princeton Day School students. The event was also held in commemoration of #HumanRightsDay that took place on December 10th.

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - A 16-year-old girl known as Shakara was placed in a chokehold, flipped over in her seat, then dragged and thrown across her classroom before being handcuffed by a South Carolina school officer in October. Video footage of the incident prompted the FBI and the Department of Justice to look into the incident and, after the Richland County Sheriff's Department conducted a 48-hour investigation into his conduct, Officer Ben Fields was fired. But the charges filed against Shakara and Niya Kenny, a classmate arrested for filming the incident, still stand.
