Brazilians Protest Bolsonaro’s Threats Against Glenn Greenwald

Brazilian journalists, artists, politicians, and activists came together Tuesday in support of journalist Glenn Greenwald who is being threatened by the government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro commented that United States journalist Glenn Greenwald "may be imprisoned" for publishing information in The Intercept Brazil that incriminates the nation’s Justice Minister Sergio Moro. The protest was held at the Brazilian Press Association in Rio de Janeiro where Greenwald and others spoke about press freedom.

Bolsonaro: Greenwald ‘May be Imprisoned’, Journalist Says ‘ No’

'Contrary to Bolsonaro's wishes, he is not (yet) a dictator. He has no power to order people arrested,' said Greenwald after the president threatened to incarcerate the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Indignation broke out across Brazil after President Jair Bolsonaro commented that United States journalist Glenn Greenwald "may be imprisoned" for publishing information in The Intercept Brazil that incriminates the nation’s Justice Minister Sergio Moro. The comments of the ultra-right president were condemned by opposition politicians and journalist associations that accused him of "serious aggression against freedom of expression."

“DAAAAAMN”

On the afternoon of August 28, Car Wash prosecutor Orlando Martello sent a message to the group relating a telephone conversation he’d had with Vladimir Aras. At the time the secretary of international judicial cooperation for the public prosecutor, Aras had said in early 2016 that he did not trust Ortega. “We have good contacts with one or two prosecutors in Venezuela, but the PGR” — the prosecutor general — “there does not inspire confidence in us,” he said in one of the Car Wash prosecutors’ chat groups. But based on the tone of the call with Martello...

Outcry After Reports Brazil Plans To Investigate Glenn Greenwald

Brazil’s Bar Association, journalists and opposition lawmakers have reacted with outrage to reports that the country’s federal police plan to investigate the bank accounts of an American journalist who published leaked conversations between prosecutors and the graft-busting judge who is now Jair Bolsonaro’s justice minister. The rightwing site the Antagonist (O Antagonista) reported on Tuesday that federal police had asked a money-laundering unit at Brazil’s finance ministry to investigate the “financial activities” of Glenn Greenwald. Police declined to comment on the allegation but confirmed an investigation had been launched into the hacking of cellphones that led to the leaks.

Lula Is Innocent. Free Him Now.

The revelations uncovered about the case against former Brazilian president Lula da Silva, jailed in April last year, vindicate a year of campaigning for his freedom. But this isn’t just about Lula, the consequences of this miscarriage of justice are huge. This last week the Intercept published a range of documents that show Lula’s conviction was politically motivated and aimed at stopping him running in the 2018 presidential election. With front-runner Lula out of the race (he was polling over double of his election rivals at the time of his arrest) far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro went on to win the election. Lula’s prosecuting Judge Sergio Moro was then appointed Minister of Justice.

Report: Corporations And Bolsonaro Teaming Up To Destroy The Amazon

As deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest reaches the highest level in a decade, the rainforest’s indigenous peoples and their supporters have called for action against the political and business interests they blame for a spike in illegal logging and other resource extraction. A report released by Amazon Watch as part of its ongoing “Complicity in Destruction” campaign aims not only to spotlight the role of North American and Western European financiers, importers, and traders in the ongoing destruction of the Amazon, but also to mobilize support for a boycott launched by the National Indigenous Mobilization (MNI) against the Brazilian agribusiness and mining interests encroaching on the threatened region.

International Lawyers Ask For Lula’s Freedom

RRio de Janeiro, Brazil - A manifesto signed by 13 international lawyers and lawyers, including the Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón, calls for the annulment of the sentence against former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011) and his release . "Lula is a political prisoner, he has to be released and his trial has to be annulled," says the manifesto, published in the French newspaper Le Monde. The signatories consider that the recent revelations of the digital media The Intercept on Operation Lava Jato "tore down the masks" and confirmed that the judge who convicted Lula in the first instance, Sérgio Moro, not only was not impartial but led the accusation in the whole process.

Starbucks Has A Slave Labor Problem

Once again, Brazilian labor inspectors have found slave labor1 on plantations where Starbucks buys coffee. And not just any plantations, but ones that have been “certified” to Starbucks’ C.A.F.E. Practices standards. This marks the second time in nine months that this has happened, pointing to a huge systemic problem with the way Starbucks is meeting their commitment to “99% ethical coffee.” It’s time for that to change.

Brazil Gay Pride in Sao Paulo Challenges Brazil’s Homophobic President

One of the world's largest LGBT Pride parade took center stage in Sao Paulo on Sunday with the carnivalesque festivities tinged with unease over Brazil's conservative political climate under President Jair Bolsonaro. As many as three million people were expected to take part in the annual march through the heart of Brazil's economic capital, traditionally an exuberant celebration of camp, color and fantasy. This year, many participants said they were turning out because they feel their liberties are increasingly under threat.

Legal Victory Strengthens LGBT Activists As Threat From Bolsonaro Looms

On Thursday, June 13, after months of postponement, Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court officially made homophobia and transphobia –– locally known as “LGBTphobia” –– a crime and outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In an eight to three ruling, the remaining judges of the Supreme Federal Court voted to criminalize LGBTphobia under existing anti-discrimination laws that prohibit intolerance and bias based on race, religious intolerance and xenophobia.

Millions Strike Against Bolsonaro’s Pension Reforms

The streets answered with a resounding “no” to Jair Bolsonaro’s pension reform proposition, to his intentions of restraining rights, and to the continuity of attacks against the people that have been happening since Michel Temer’s coup d’etat in 2016. Throughout the day, the protests, summoned as a General Strike by national union organizations, gathered millions of people in 360 cities from north to south, in all of the 26 states and the Federal District. In the capitals and major cities, the transport unions adherence to the general strike – affecting subway, urban train and bus systems...

The Truth About Lula Conviction Comes To Light

This past Sunday, June 9, the Brazilian correspondent for the digital magazine The Intercept brought to light the truth by publishing a series of Telegram messages that highlight the gross violations of the Brazilian Constitution and the irregularities committed by Sergio Moro and prosecutor Dallagnol to plot the condemnation of Lula and ultimately gave Bolsonaro power. Judge Moro and Prosecutor Dallagnol acted in a calculated coordinated manner, mocking the Constitution of Brazil and the principle of impartiality to imprison Lula and prevent the triumph of the PT. The flawed trial against Lula must be annulled. The International Committee Peace, Justice and Dignity demands once again the immediate freedom of Lula, the public recognition of his innocence and the decriminalization of the PT.

Brazilian Lawyers Demand Investigation Into Judge’s Behavior And The Release Of Lula

The story released last Sunday by The Intercept Brazil about the Operation Lava Jato (or Car Wash) resulted in collateral effects at different levels in Brazil, including the legal field. Four members of the National Council of the Public Prosecution requested the National Corregidor of that organ to open an investigation about the facts disclosed by the reports. The case denounced by the website deals with the existence of an alliance between current Justice Minister Sergio Moro and the Lava Jato coordinator, Prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol, for a legal-political action against ex-president Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva prior his arrest, when Mr. Moro was a federal judge and was involved in prosecutions related to the operation.

Lula Conviction A Gigantic Legal Farce Guided By The US Department Of Justice

The Intercept’s revelation that the Operation Car Wash team sabotaged the 2018 presidential elections shows what everyone already knew but couldn’t prove concretely: that the Lula conviction was a gigantic legal farce. In any nation that was even minimally civilized the case against Lula, as well as a good part of Operation Car Wash in general, would have been dismissed a long time ago due to the glaring disregard of the right of innocent until proven guilty and due process. Operation Car Wash implemented a veritable free-for-all against the PT and Lula which included illegal coercion...

The Indigenous Resistance Against Brazilian President Bolsonaro

The young indigenous man, bent double in pain, uttered a deep, heart-wrenching moan. The pain was unbearable. After a while he withdrew from the circle of chanting people and threw himself on the ground, keeping his swollen hands up in the air to avoid painful contact. I knew he was bringing shame on himself by showing so clearly that he was in agony. Along with a dozen others, dressed mainly in Bermuda shorts and t-shirts, he was going through the ritual of the tucandeira. This is a rite of passage by which Sateré-Mawé youths make the transition from childhood to adulthood...
