Gaza Ceasefire Talks Resume In Doha Amid Flagrant Israeli Atrocities

Gaza ceasefire talks resumed on Thursday, August 15, in the Qatari capital of Doha with the notable absence of one of the negotiating parties, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). Over the past several months, the talks have involved three main mediators including the United States, Egypt, and Qatar in addition to warring parties Israel and Hamas, and have passed through different stages of obstructions and stalemate recriminations. Hamas had already announced on Sunday, August 11 that it rejected an invitation to attend the new round of negotiations because it wants a return to the Biden-backed ceasefire proposal and the amendments it submitted to that plan on July 2.

Activists have held two vigils each day and met with the Missions of South Korea, Brazil, Venezuela, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Malta, the Holy See, Iran, Denmark, Russia, Mexico, and Slovenia. You can add your own words, but it reads: “I urge your country to move to convene an emergency session of the UN General Assembly and use Uniting For Peace (Resolution 377) to impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions on the Israeli government, suspend the Israeli government from the United Nations, and send unarmed peacekeepers to Palestine.”

New Orleans Residents Rebuke Sham ‘Peace Statement’

New Orleans, LA – On August 6, at 9:30 a.m., nearly 100 local activists and community organizations converged onto New Orleans City Hall. They gathered to stand against the New Orleans City Council adopting a “Statement of Peace,” and demanded instead a resolution for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The so-called “Statement of Peace” was sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, an openly Zionist organization. It calls for peace while conveniently omitting Palestine or Palestinians, ignores local victims of Israeli genocidal violence such as Tawfic Abdeljabbar, and implies that local anti-genocide protests are “calls for violence.” After only a few weeks in circulation, the statement has been put forth on the council agenda.

The death toll from Israel’s bombing of the Tabi’in school in the Daraj neighborhood in Gaza City surpassed 100 victims according to the Palestinian health ministry. The bombing targeted two floors in the school, one of which was being used as a mosque, where civilians were holding the dawn (Fajr) prayer at the moment of the strike. The Palestinian Civil Defense said that Israeli bombs killed and maimed everyone who was present on the mosque floor, describing the massacre as “beyond imagination” and comparable to the massacre at the Al-Ahli Arab hospital in Gaza City in December of last year, which killed 500 Palestinians.

Veterans To Vice President Harris: End The Siege Of Gaza

The national organization Veterans For Peace has written an Open Letter to Vice President Kamala Harris, asking her to push for an immediate end to the siege of Gaza.  The letter begins: “Dear Vice President Harris, we are reaching out to you as military veterans who have fought in multiple US wars, and who continue to uphold the US Constitution and international law, to organize for justice and equality in our home communities, and to advocate for a peaceful foreign policy. We are appalled by the ongoing Israeli slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinian men, women and children and by the maiming of tens of thousands more. We are outraged by the systematic blocking of food, leading to malnutrition, starvation, disease and the deaths of many more, particularly babies and young children.  These are unbearable and unacceptable crimes that will go down in the history books as a terrible genocide – a holocaust.”

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon reached a breaking point once again on Sunday, after 12 people were killed by the explosion of a projectile that fell on a playground in the town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Israel accused Hezbollah of having launched the projectile, which it claimed to be an Iranian-made “heavy” rocket. Hezbollah denied responsibility and said that the explosion was the result of a malfunction of an Israeli anti-missile round. Late on Sunday, the Israeli cabinet concluded an emergency meeting in which, according to Israeli reports, ministers voted to delegate Netanyahu and his war minister Yoav Gallant to decide on retaliatory action against Hezbollah.

We worked with various nongovernmental organizations and the World Health Organization in hospitals throughout the Strip. In addition to our medical and surgical expertise, many of us have a public health background, as well as experience working in humanitarian and conflict zones, including Ukraine during the brutal Russian invasion. Some of us are veterans of the United States Armed Forces. We are a multifaith and multiethnic group. None of us support the horrors committed on October 7 by Palestinian armed groups and individuals in Israel.

Israeli forces have killed at least 131 Palestinians since Saturday in three separate targeted bombings on locations where displaced families had been taking shelter. On Saturday, Israeli fighter jets and armed drones struck a crowded tent city several times in the al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, on Saturday morning. The army fired at least nine heavy U.S.-made JDAM missiles on the crowded tent area, according to survivors’ testimonies gathered by Mondoweiss. Al-Mawasi had been declared a “safe area” by the Israeli army in early May as it began its assault on Rafah, pushing thousands of families who had already fled their homes in the center and north of the strip to flee again to al-Mawasi.

The Israeli negotiations team returned from Qatar after the first meetings of the resumed ceasefire talks on Wednesday to update the government ahead of upcoming talks in Cairo, Israel’s Channel 12 reported. On Wednesday, the heads of the Israeli Mossad, the CIA, and the Egyptian intelligence met in Doha with Qatar’s Prime Minister to discuss a potential deal with Hamas, as several Israeli and U.S. sources reported “progress” in the talks to reach a deal with the Palestinian group. In Washington, U.S. National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, said that Washington sees an opportunity to reach a ceasefire and prisoners’ exchange deal in Gaza.

Indirect negotiations have resumed between Israel and Hamas in Doha, Qatar, based on the amended U.S. proposed ceasefire deal. Israeli media reported that Netanyahu was set to meet military and security officials on Sunday for “limited” consultancy on the talks. Israeli public broadcasting also reported that the heads of various intelligence agencies would meet on Wednesday to discuss the talks, including CIA head William Burns, head of Egyptian intelligence Abbas Kamel, the Israeli Mossad’s David Barnea, and Qatar’s Prime Minister and minister of foreign affairs, Mohammad Ben Abdel Rahman Al-Thani.

Israel Refuses Hamas Demand For Written Ceasefire Assurances

Israel will not accept Hamas’ request for written assurances regarding negotiations in the second phase of a proposed deal for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza. The Palestinian resistance group is demanding that a cessation of hostilities outlined in the first phase of the proposal be ongoing throughout negotiations in the second phase. However, Israel is insistent on the option to resume the war if negotiations falter. During David Barnea’s visit to the Qatari capital, Doha, last week, the Mossad chief conveyed the message to mediators that Israel “does not accept Hamas' demand for a written commitment regarding negotiations for the second phase of the agreement,” Axios reported on 6 July, citing Israeli officials.

The Israeli Mossad and the office of Israel’s Prime Minister announced on Wednesday that mediators in the ceasefire talks gave Israel Hamas’s response to the U.S.-amended ceasefire proposal. Benjamin Netanyahu is set to head a cabinet meeting later on Thursday to discuss Hamas’s response. Meanwhile, Israel’s Channel 12 quoted a high-ranking Israeli official saying that Hamas’s response “for the first time allows for making progress in negotiations.” For its part, the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot reported that the heads of Israel’s security forces were “angry at the attempts of Netanyahu and Smotrich to sabotage the deal,” pointing accusations at Netanyahu of obstructing communication channels with mediators beforehand.

Israeli army leaders are privately pushing for a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza, describing it as the “best way” to recover over 100 captives and to “reach a deal with Hezbollah” that would prevent the expansion of the war, according to six current and former security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to the New York Times (NYT). The top generals reportedly fear being dragged into a “forever war” by a political echelon that has repeatedly sabotaged attempts at reaching a ceasefire deal. According to the officials who spoke with the NYT, the “army is short of spare parts, munitions, motivation, and even troops.”

Blinken’s Lies About Hamas Reveal Biden Administration’s True Intentions

“The proposal that President Biden laid out 12 days ago was virtually identical to one that Hamas had accepted and put forward itself on May the 6th.  So there’s no reason why this agreement should not be reached.  The only reason would be Hamas continuing to try to change the terms.” So said U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in an interview with Al Jazeera on Wednesday. The statement is part of an extended campaign of deception that Blinken has spearheaded. It featured President Joe Biden’s dramatic unveiling of a ceasefire proposal, followed by a U.N. Security Council resolution and Blinken’s latest tour of the Middle East — all ostensibly to reach a ceasefire.
