The street artist Banksy has unveiled a new piece at the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Looking at it, it’s clear he’s making a statement about the how the UK is increasingly using legal means to restrict the right to speak out. Fittingly, the powers-that-be immediately moved to hide his message from public view. Under Keir Starmer, Britain is increasingly keen to tell people what they shouldn’t do. Don’t protest. Don’t oppose the genocide. Don’t even call it a genocide. Don’t look at the Banksy. For the love of god, don’t look at the Banksy!

On Friday 29 August 2025 Jewish Artists for Palestine disrupted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms, silencing the orchestra, forcing the performance to restart and bringing the live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 to a halt. With this action we’ve sent a clear message: we reject Zionist funding, censorship and complicity in our cultural institutions. We also call out the BBC for their ongoing complicity and inability to acknowledge the genocide. As Jewish artists and cultural practitioners we are calling out and disrupting the BBC, Royal Albert Hall and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s complicity. We call upon all cultural workers to rise up in their own institutions, against Israel’s continued apartheid, genocide and ethnic cleansing in Palestine.

In September, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave a speech smearing media platform African Stream as secretly funded and controlled by Vladimir Putin himself. As Blinken said: According to the outlet’s website, ‘African Stream is’ – and I quote ‘a pan-African digital media organization based exclusively on social media platforms, focused on giving a voice to all Africans, both at home and abroad.’ In reality, the only voice it gives is to Kremlin propagandists.” Blinken provided no evidence to support these assertions. Yet, within hours, Silicon Valley reacted and crushed Kaballo’s organization. African Stream’s YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook pages were permanently deleted, while its Twitter account was demonetized.

Last week, Smalls took on another Goliath. As part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, he tried to deliver life-saving aid—including food and baby formula—to the people of Gaza, who are suffering from a severe famine deliberately engineered by the Israeli government. The Handala, the ship carrying the aid, was illegally seized in international waters by Israel’s military, and Smalls was singled out for violence, choked and kicked by Israeli soldiers, apparently because he’s Black. Past attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza have been dealt with even more harshly by Israel: In 2010, 57 activists aboard the aid ship Mavi Marmara were shot—nine of them killed—on their way to Gaza.

As Europe’s summer music festival season rolls out, mainstream media and governments are struggling to keep Palestine solidarity off the stage. In its coverage of Glastonbury Festival, the BBC focused on censoring the Irish rap group Kneecap over their staunch pro-Palestinian stance – only to be met by a wave of artists who used their platform to call for a free Palestine and to demand broadcasters share real news about the Israeli genocide in Gaza. Among them was the British duo Bob Vylan, who led the crowd in chanting “Free, free Palestine” and “Death, death to the IDF,” denouncing war crimes committed by the Israeli army, including the starvation of children and the killing of civilians in humanitarian aid lines.

According to No Azure for Apartheid, a group of pro-Palestine Microsoft employees, an automated filter silently prevents such emails from reaching recipients. The filter became effective on Wednesday following Microsoft’s Build developer conference, which faced repeated disruptions by the activist group, Drop Site added. Microsoft has faced internal dissent from employees upset over the company’s collaboration with the Israeli military in its ongoing war on Palestinians in Gaza, which scholars widely consider genocide.

My experience is not an isolated incident, but part of a larger, systemic issue that permeates education across the United States. It is a symptom of what I have come to understand as the “Palestine exception,” where conversations surrounding Israel/Palestine are subjected to unique levels of scrutiny and suppression, from academic units, to students’ newspapers and faculty newsletters, to Executive Orders and Homeland Security.

On April 10 the Supreme Court of the United States ordered the Trump administration to “facilitate” the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, one of 200 men sent to an El Salvador prison under circumstances of very questionable legality. Abrego Garcia differs from the others in that the Trump administration originally admitted that he was deported in error and that they did not have grounds to send him to his home country, El Salvador.

Gallagher, dean of the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, wrote University of Chicago Professor and In These Times columnist Eman Abdelhadi on Saturday morning to tell her that her upcoming keynote speech was canceled. “We were unaware of your planned lecture, and since this conference overlaps with two other annual events on campus, we cannot provide security at short notice,” Gallagher wrote in an email. “For this reason, we respectfully request that you do not participate in the conference.” Abdelhadi is a widely celebrated academic, organizer, author and journalist. She frequently speaks on campuses across the country and from 2023-24 was a faculty fellow at Notre Dame.

First, the notion of government as a democratizing public good and institution of social responsibility—that once held power to account, protected the vulnerable, and nurtured the ideals of justice and collective responsibility—is being methodically destroyed. The common good, once seen as the essence of democratic life, has become the enemy of the neoliberal fascist state.
