Over 800 Climate Strikes Planned In U.S. On September 20th; Global Climate Strikes To Take Place In 132 Countries

During Climate Week, escalated actions will happen throughout New York City and across the US during the week of September 23-29. Communities are joining youth-led climate strikes, as well as coming together to protect families, air, and water from toxic fossil fuel projects, including in Minnesota, Seattle, Portland, New Hampshire, and more with hundreds across the country taking on the fossil fuel corporations and financiers.

Climate Science Deniers Planning European Misinformation Campaign, Leaked Documents Reveal

A coalition of climate science denial groups is gearing up for a European media blitz later this month, in an apparent bid to derail efforts to set an EU-wide “net zero” emissions target, documents obtained by DeSmog show. Plans for a self-styled “European Declaration” include press conferences in Brussels, Rome and Oslo and a letter to be sent to leaders of EU and UN institutions, scheduled for mid-September. The letter claims to have “400 independent Climate Scientists and Professionals” signed up so far.

Record 7 Million People Displaced By Extreme Weather Events In First Half Of 2019

In another sign of the climate crisis, a record seven million people were displaced from their homes by extreme weather events during the first half of 2019, The New York Times reported Thursday. The number comes from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), which has been using data from governments, UN humanitarian agencies and news accounts to publish annual reports since 2003. Their mid-year figures for 2019, published Thursday, marked the highest number of disaster displacements the organization has ever recorded by this point in the year.

How Big Oil Blocked The Nation’s Greenest Governor On Climate Change

It was Valentine's Day 2018, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee was about to be jilted. Few outside Inslee's circle of advisers knew that one of the nation's most ardent advocates of climate action had been working for weeks to forge an alliance with one of the state's leading greenhouse gas polluters—the oil giant BP. Now, on the day before a key hearing for Inslee's proposal to enact the nation's first carbon tax, the kind of comprehensive climate plan he had been talking about since taking office, BP was evasive.

Washington Court Upholds Climate Necessity Defense

Today climate activists in the U.S. celebrate a crucial victory. Yesterday the Washington Supreme Court denied the State’s petition for review in environmental activist Ken Ward’s case and set a Washington State precedent recognizing the necessity defense for direct action for the sake of preventing catastrophic climate change. “This victory upholds the right of a defendant to assert the necessity defense to the charges brought by the State and also strengthens the essential role that a jury of community members will play in determining whether the accused should be found guilty or not,” said Lauren Regan...

Nearly 1,000 Amazon Workers Will Walk Out And Join Global Climate Strike

"As a leader, we need to reach zero first and not be a company who slides in at the last possible deadline,” Nearly 1,000 Amazon employees have pledged to join the massive upcoming Global Climate Strike. The employees will walk out on September 20th to demand that the company “makes climate a priority.” The 941 Amazon employees that have signed the internal pledge includes workers at corporate offices, according to Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, the group organizing the walkout.

BlackRock: Divest From Amazon Destruction

BlackRock, the world's largest investment firm, has more money invested in the fossil fuel and agribusiness industries – the biggest drivers of climate change – than any other company in the world. That means that BlackRock's portfolio constitutes a huge liability for putting the planet on a path towards runaway climate change -- in fact, BlackRock contributes more to climate change than almost any other company on Earth. Demand that BlackRock divest and stop financing Amazon destruction!

Benefits Of Investing In Climate Adaptation Far Outweigh Costs, Commission Says

Images of devastating storm damage and droughts around the world this year have been drawing attention to the risks of global warming, particularly to the world's poorest people. Cutting emissions is critical to minimizing those risks, but a new report argues that the world needs to devote an equally urgent effort to adapting to the changes that are sure to come. The report, released Tuesday by the Global Commission on Adaptation, argues that a drastic increase in investing in adaptation measures, such as early warning systems and resilient infrastructure...

People’s Mobilization Unites For People And Planet

The People's Mobilization to Stop the US War Machine and Save the Planet is two weeks away. The "People's Mobe" will be held from September 20 to 23 in New York City during the United Nations General Assembly. Members of the Venezuelan Embassy Protection Collective started organizing the People's Mobe in May. Organizers sought to bring the issue of US violations of international law, such as when the State Department violated the Vienna Convention by raiding the embassy on May 16, to the UN General Assembly and began to plan around September 21, the International Day of Peace. Organizers wrote: At a time when all of the world leaders gather, we will say we’ve had enough of the US War Machine. We demand the US be held accountable for its destructive acts. It’s time for the US government to obey the United Nations Charter by stopping regime change operations, ending the use of unilateral coercive measures (aka sanctions) and ceasing military attacks. We demand the US sign the nuclear weapons ban treaty, rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement and Paris climate treaty, disband NATO and close bases and outposts around the world.

Renewable Energy’s Booming, But Still Falling Far Short Of Climate Goals

Renewable energy capacity quadrupled worldwide over the past 10 years, with an estimated $2.6 trillion invested in its growth, a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme shows. But the speed of that growth still falls far short of what researchers say is needed to keep global warming in check. To meet the Paris climate agreement aim of keeping global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported last year that the world would need to invest an average of about $3 trillion to $3.5 trillion every year between 2016 and 2050.

Major Media Fail To Connect Hurricane Dorian To Climate Change

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Although Hurricane Dorian exemplifies what climate scientists have warned about, major U.S. media outlets are failing to connect the climate crisis to the strongest Atlantic storm ever to hit land, a Public Citizen analysis shows. Scientists say that global warming makes hurricanes intensify faster, dump more rain and move more slowly. All these things have happened with Dorian; it has moved over water that is warmer than usual, intensified at an unprecedented rate, dumped 24 inches of rain on parts of the Bahamas and slowed to a crawl, moving at as little as 1 mile per hour.

The Rise Of A New Climate Activism

I saw Greta Thunberg for the first time in Poland at the end of last year. It was during the early days of the Katowice UNclimate negotiations. She was sitting in a makeshift TV studio, having her pigtails re-tied. I was in a hurry, chasing too many stories down at once, and paid little attention to this 15-year-old girl. Of course, I’d heard of Greta by that point. I’d received several emails inviting me to press conferences where she was speaking, but I hadn’t taken the bait. I had recently written about the Juliana v United States litigation, where a group of young people sued the government for failing to protect them against climate change...

Anti-War Climate Justice, Arizona’s All-Seeing Eye & Kids As Pre-Existing Conditions

Indigenous lands become a testing ground for Israeli-US mass surveillance – and once again indigenous wisdom throws common sense at the blundering idiocy of empire. Plus, kids as pre-existing conditions and detention centers as black sites. Next up, the people are mobilizing and connecting issues and power in the face of imperialist climate change.

Nonviolence Denial Is As Dangerous As Climate Denial

Persistent willful ignorance of necessary knowledge can be deadly. This is true of denial of climate collapse. It is also true of denial of the tools and power of nonviolent action. As evidence and knowledge pile up in each case, denial of the facts looks more and more intentional, reckless, and malevolent, or intentionally, recklessly, and malevolently manufactured by propagandists. “We need to burn more oil or suffer horribly” is slowly being recognized as a vicious deception, as more and more people come to understand that we need to burn less oil or suffer horribly.

Extinction Rebellion Shuts Down Manchester

"Any action to disrupt major transport links impacting businesses and communities will be totally unacceptable" Greater Manchester Police have urged climate change protesters to allow the city to get back to normal following this weekend's demonstration. Extinction Rebellion demonstrators have brought Deansgate to a standstill since Friday morning, to highlight the threat of climate change. Roads remained closed to all cars from St Mary's Gate to John Dalton Street as hundreds of protesters gathered for talks on sustainable living, climate chance and resistance.
