Why Almost 10,000 Employees Are Suing Chipotle

By David Laconangelo for CS Monitor - After settling claims in several states, the burrito chain faces a class-action lawsuit from employees across the country. Nearly 10,000 current and former Chipotle employees have joined a class-action lawsuit against the burrito chain, alleging that they were routinely forced to work off the clock. Chipotle, say plaintiffs in the case, "routinely requires hourly-paid restaurant employees to punch out, and then continue working until they are given permission to leave," according to a complaint initially filed in 2014.

Let’s Make Them Poorer, And We’ll Get Rich

By Chris Hamby for Buzz Feed News - In 2006, near the height of Wall Street’s disastrous speculative frenzy, some of the world’s biggest banks smelled an opportunity. They saw a way to turn the soaring price of oil into hefty profits. And it involved the tiny island nation of Sri Lanka. The bankers presented officials who ran the state oil venture there with a way to hedge against further price hikes.

US Arms Makers Invest In A New Cold War

By Jonathan Marshall for Consortium News - Exclusive: Behind the U.S. media-political clamor for a new Cold War with Russia is a massive investment by the Military-Industrial Complex in “think tanks” and other propaganda outlets, writes Jonathan Marshall. The U.S. military has won only a single major war since the end of World War II (the Gulf War of 1990-91). But U.S. military contractors continue to win major budget wars in Congress nearly every year, proving that no force on earth can resist their lobbying prowess and political clout.

The Court That Rules The World

By Chris Hamby for Buzz Feed - Imagine a private, global super court that empowers corporations to bend countries to their will. Say a nation tries to prosecute a corrupt CEO or ban dangerous pollution. Imagine that a company could turn to this super court and sue the whole country for daring to interfere with its profits, demanding hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars as retribution.

CEO Of Giant Corporation Tells US Government He’s The Boss Of Them

By Dave Johnson for Campaign for America's Future - Imagine, if you will, going to the IRS and saying, “I don’t think the tax rate is fair so I’m not going to pay it.” Regular Americans can’t do that. But Apple just did. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook was interviewed by The Washington Post early this month. He was asked about the vast sums of profits that Apple has shifted into overseas tax havens thanks to a loophole in US tax law that lets them “defer” paying taxes on those profits as long as the money technically stays outside the country.

Weapons Makers Tell Investors Russia Threat Great For Business

By Lee Fang for The Intercept - THE ESCALATING ANTI-RUSSIAN rhetoric in the U.S. presidential campaign comes in the midst of a major push by military contractors to position Moscow as a potent enemy that must be countered with a drastic increase in military spending by NATO countries. Weapon makers have told investors that they are relying on tensions with Russia to fuel new business in the wake of Russian’s annexation of Crimea and modest increases in its military budget.

Ohio Jury Says DuPont Acted With Malice By Poisoning People With C8

By Staff of TRO Fire - Earlier this week, the jury in Columbus Ohio rewarded a plaintiff 5.1 million dollars in a lawsuit against DuPont because the company had been releasing a chemical know as C8 into the Ohio river. Those affected by it, over 3500 different lawsuits, had developed certain types of cancers. In this particular case, the plaintiff had developed testicular cancer that was directly linked to DuPont’s C8 chemical. Mike Papantonio from Ring of Fire is the one who tried this case, along with an attorney named Gary Douglas, and a few other attorneys from Mike Papantonio’s law firm.

Corporation Sues Poor, Black Community Fighting Environmental Racism

By Kendra Pierre-Louis for Inside Climate News - "My dream," said Ben Eaton, one of the roughly 3,000 people who live in the working-class, mostly African-American hamlet of Uniontown, Alabama, "was to grow up, get married, build my own home, and just live life comfortably." It all worked out—except for the comfort. That part of his dream, says Eaton, was buried by a landfill. His dream home is now less than three miles from the Arrowhead landfill, which has filled his life with noise, an acrid smell and now, a lawsuit that followed when he complained about it.

Transcanada’s $15 Billion Suit Against US Corporate Nationhood At Its Worst

By Michael Levitin for Occupy - When the NAFTA nations – United States, Canada and Mexico – meet Wednesday for the annual Three Amigos Summit in Ottawa, climate change and clean energy are expected to dominate the agenda. However, a curiously timed $15 billion lawsuit launched last Friday by TransCanada, which is using NAFTA to sue the U.S. government for its rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline, has undercut the very same climate ideals professed by the North American nations.

Shady History Of Private Security Firm Omar Mateen Worked For

By Aviva Shen for Think Progress - Omar Mateen’s employer, private security behemoth G4S, is taking a nosedive in the stock market after the 29-year-old suspect went on the deadliest shooting rampage in recent history, killing at least 49 and injuring 53 others in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. G4S is currently being thrust into the spotlight because it employed Mateen, but the firm’s murky reputation precedes it. Staffers have been caught beating and abusing detained immigrants, keeping children in solitary confinement, and torturing inmates all over the world.

We Must Understand Corporate Power To Fight It

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - In the winter of 1941, a Jewish gravedigger from Chelmo, the western province of Poland, appeared in Warsaw and desperately sought a meeting with Jewish leaders. He told them the Nazis were rounding up Jews, including the old, women and children, and forcing them into what looked like tightly sealed buses. The buses had the exhaust pipes redirected into the cabins. The Jews were killed with carbon monoxide. He had helped dig the mass graves for thousands of corpses until he escaped.

Western Donors Shape Pro-Corporate Agenda For Africa

By Staff of Oakland Institute - The Unholy Alliance, Five Western Donors Shape a Pro-Corporate Agenda for African Agriculture, exposes how a coalition of four donor countries and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is shaping a pro-business environment in the agricultural sector of developing countries, especially in Africa. “‘Enabling Business’ has become a buzzword for development agencies, but it is vital to understand what this entails,” said Anuradha Mittal, Executive Director of the Oakland Institute. “Our research shows that, in order to foster private investments, governments are being forced to open their agricultural sector...

WWF Partners With Logging Company Destroying “Pygmy” Land

By Staff of Survival International - A French logging company and official partner of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is deforesting a huge area of rainforest in southeast Cameroon without the consent of local Baka “Pygmies” who have lived there and managed the land for generations, Survival International has learned. Rougier is described as an “integrated forest & trade company” and a large “forest operator” in a WWF press release and report. It is felling trees in an estimated 600,000 hectare area, which is more than is permitted under Cameroonian law.

Meet Abusive ‘World’s Largest Company’ You’ve Never Heard Of

By Jim Hightower for AlterNet - Giant corporate entities have become so far-flung and impersonal that "human relations" departments have been created within the soulless structures to cloak the fact that there's really nothing human about them. HR is mostly known for sending the corporate rank and file peppy motivational memos that boil down to: "The beatings will continue until morale improves." The beatings of American workers (wage slashing, axed benefits, union busting, mass firings, offshored factories, and brutish abuse of worker rights)

Big Oil Plots To Keep Public Out Of Public Land Bidding

By Steve Horn for Desmog - At the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC)'s 2016 meeting in Denver, Colorado this week, a representative from a prominent oil and gas lobbying group advocated that auctions of federal lands should happen online “eBay”-style — a clear attempt to shut the public out of the bidding process for fossil fuel leases on public lands. Speaking on public lands issues in front of IOGCC's public lands committee, Kathleen Sgamma — Western Energy Alliance's (WEA) vice president of governmental affairs — compared environmental groups' Keep It In The Ground campaign actions
