Fracking Executive Confirms: Homeland Security Thinks Fracktivists Are Terrorists

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) currently uses the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB), a consolidated database maintained by the Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation Terrorist Screening Center (TSC) of identifying information about those known or reasonably suspected of being involved in terrorist activity in order to facilitate DHS mission-related functions, such as counterterrorism, law enforcement, border security, and inspection activities. It’s shocking to think that young families, pregnant women and retirees who don’t want to live next to a heavy industrial plant that will decrease their property value, diminish their quality of life and emit hazardous air pollutants that compromise their health would be considered terrorists. But what is more shocking is that Grawe has inside information about who is on the DHS watch list!

An Open Letter To The 3.5%

We are in a historic moment where a new cultural, political, ecological reality must emerge and replace the dominant paradigm. The planet itself, to say nothing of the overwhelming majority of human beings, can no longer live with the killer that is global corporate capitalism in our midst. Research of hundreds of resistance movements shows that no resistance movement in the last 100 years has failed when 3.5 percent of the population participate. How close are we to that tipping point? We may be closer than you think. So, you are cordially invited, challenged even- to become part of the 3.5 percent by committing to an action or actions starting April 4, 2014 against the corporate controlled State and it’s paradigm that preys on the resources and spirits of people. Your actions, and the actions of others, will become a ripple that crisscross with other ripples, each coming from their own centers of daring. These ripples can build a current that can wipe out the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

US Push On Intellectual Property In TPP Violates International Norms

Since Wikileaks made the intellectual property (IP) chapter public, multiple organizations have provided extensive and detailed critiques. According to these analyses, the text demonstrates U.S. preference for increasing protections on existing copyrights and patents over balanced policies that promote global innovation, creativity and political freedom. The disclosures especially suggest the inordinate influence of the motion picture and pharmaceutical industries. In the first brief interview commenting on the leak, the U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman defended the proposal saying it is within the bounds of U.S. law. He happened to make this comment while touring Paramount Pictures studios in Los Angeles. Further analysis of the IP chapter shows that it violates international consensus on several important issues.

The Man From The North: Tis The Season To Boycott

Boycott Season is now upon us. Let every citizen take careful aim. Your target is the corporate empire. Your weapon is your wallet. For decades, corporations have defined the battlefield of shopping malls, box stores, mail order catalogues, and online sites. They have set the timeframe back each year; Halloween currently kicks off the battles. You can see the preparations: the lights rolled out, the anthems played, the trees set up like cannons. The enlistment fliers have been posted far and wide: on billboards, in newspapers and magazines. The radio sends out the call: all shoppers to the front! Every family must support the effort and do their patriotic duty. The costs are high; savings must be sacrificed. The debts pile up like soldiers’ bodies, unspeakable. But it can’t be helped – the holidays fuel our country. Like wars for oil, it’s unavoidable.

Troubled Youth Prison Company Wins Even More Contracts

Despite voluminous evidence that inmates have suffered violence, sexual abuse and neglect inside the facilities of a private juvenile prison operator, the state of Florida has in recent weeks awarded fresh contracts to the company. Since late October, Florida has granted Youth Services International two new contracts to operate youth prisons, while signaling that YSI is in line to win a third contract to run a facility near Miami. The decision came after The Huffington Post published an extensive investigation that documented more than two decades of abuse at the company's juvenile and adult facilities. Florida's Department of Juvenile Justice has continued to award tens of millions of dollars worth of prison contracts to YSI, despite a civil rights investigation by the Justice Department and probes into negligence and violent conditions by authorities in at least five states.

Monsanto Hires PR Firm To Fool Public, Combat “Most Hated”

Monsanto is the agriculture world’s prince of darkness, spreading its demonic genetically modified seeds on fields all over the earth. Or at least that’s the case if you believe the likes of HBO talk-show host Bill Maher, the hazmat suit-wearing activists in Occupy Monsanto or any of a growing number of biotechnology haters. For years the St. Louis-based company has ignored such critics. But now the biotech giant is attempting a public relations makeover. In recent months the company has shaken up its senior public relations staff, upped its relationship with one of the nation’s largest public relations firms and helped launch a website designed to combat the fallacies surrounding genetically modified organisms. And, most importantly, it is recognizing biotechnology has a public image problem.

Attempts To Silence Environmentalists Continue

Early November marked the 18th anniversary of the tragic murder of outspoken writer and environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight colleagues by the Nigerian government. Saro-Wiwa and the others had waged a long campaign to stop multinational oil company Royal Dutch Shell from drilling in the lands of the Ogoni people in the Niger delta. Nigerian military harassed and intimidated members of the Ogoni community for years because they opposed Shell’s drilling program. Saro-Wiwa and his colleagues defended their communities and local environment from a notoriously toxic industry. In November 1995, a special court established by the military government illegally detained and tried them on spurious charges. Convicted without due process, they were executed 10 days later, despite enormous international outcry.

Monsanto Blockaders Brutally Attacked In Malvinas, Argentina

Monsanto protesters in Malvinas, Argentina got a rude awakening yesterday. November 28, 2013 was the 72nd day of the blockade against the brand new Monsanto plant under construction in Malvinas, set to be the largest GM seed plant in Latin America. Protesters have been camped on site since September 18th and despite attacks and death threats they remain unmoved. They have managed to block all five entrances to the plant site, bringing construction to a standstill. Brutal retaliation came early in the morning yesterday when two buses of approximately 60 people arrived in camp and attacked the protesters, most of whom were sleeping in tents at the time. They ripped tents, destroyed property, set fires in the campsite, threw bricks and stones and beat protesters with clubs. Some protesters also had their computers and phones stolen.

Day Of Mourning Statement From Leonard Peltier

I know we can make a change for the better if we put our hearts and minds together and let this day of mourning be a time of renewal, we can spread the concept that mankind must live in harmony with the creators handy-work and with one another. If this time I have spent here in prison could produce anything of value I pray that it would move you to become involved. Find the right things within government and support them, and find the wrong things in government and change them. This government as it stands right now is on the verge of losing what constitutional rights people have. This government is violating the constitution over and over and over. These violations started before you or I were even conceived. As some of you may know the Constitution is a copy of the Iroquois 6 nations Confederacy law. The constitution originally was designed so that men would have maximum freedoms as long as they did not infringe on the natural rights of others or in essence harm someone else.

Five Ways To Support Striking Walmart Workers

Nothing demonstrates support for striking workers more than actually showing up yourself. Not only do the workers appreciate your display of solidarity, but also the increased turnout signifies to bystanders that this is a legitimate problem worthy of everyone’s concern. On Black Friday, a record 1,500 protests will take place at Wal-Marts across the country. Though not every location will necessarily have striking workers participating in the event, each protest will educate consumers about the evils of the corporation and show even the workers who stay on shift that citizens support them earning a living wage. Even if you thought you’d never be caught dead at a Wal-Mart, particularly on the busiest shopping day, it’s always turns out to be much more fun joining the activist crowd outside than fighting the consumer crowd inside. Search BlackFridayProtest.org to find the nearest Walmart strike event near you.

Obama, Pelosi And Reid Greeted By Anti-TPP Protesters In LA

On November 25th, Barack Obama came to Beverly Hills for a high dollar fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial and Congressional Campaign Committees at the Beverly Park homes of former basketball star Magic Johnson and billionaire media mogul Haim Saban. Tickets started at $2500 a person for the reception and $16,200 a person for the dinner. 250 protesters were there to greet Obama and tell him to flush the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Below is how the day and night went in pictures. The TPP is a global trade agreement being secretly negotiated by the US Trade Representative with 600 transnational corporations and industry trade groups, will affect nearly every aspect of Americans’ lives. If passed, it will undermine state, local and federal laws, including those governing food safety, environmental protection, internet freedom, worker rights, democratic sovereignty, healthcare and drug prices, and banking and finance regulation.

Under Cover Of Thanksgiving, SEC Postpones “Final” Lobbying Ethics Rule

When the federal government quietly releases something in the din of Thanksgiving week, it usually means it’s something bad – something lawmakers are legally required to disclose, but something they really don’t want the public to know about. And when the agency releasing the information is the famously corrupt Securities and Exchange Commission, “bad” is likely too weak a word. In fact, you can almost a guarantee something truly hideous is happening. This week, as much of America heads home for Thanksgiving, the SEC stealthily inserted a couple ofparagraphs into the federal register. And while the disclosure is shrouded in esoteric language as a way to say “nothing to see here! move along!” there’s plenty to see here – and we shouldn’t move along. As the Project on Government Oversight reports, the SEC is postponing a new ethics rule. That’s no big deal, right? Wrong.

Walmart Lobbyist Behind Smears Of Black Friday Protesters

As Black Friday approaches Americans from all over the country are preparing to protest the horrendous labor practices of some of the world’s largest corporations – including its largest retailer, Walmart. Walmart uses slave labor from around the world in places like Bangladesh as well as forcing American taxpayers to subsidize their employees’ food and medical needs. Though the company does help employees get food for Thanksgiving meals – from other employees. I guess that’s compassionate conservatism? But Walmart is striking back with support of a group called Work Center Watch that targets Black Friday protesters in an PR campaign denoted as “Black Lieday.” Who registered the group? The firm once head of lobbying for Walmart which is led by a former Walmart Executive. TheNation.com has discovered that Worker Center Watch was registered by the former head lobbyist for Walmart.

Globalized Corporate Trade Fails Again: WTO Stalls

The approach of global trade is not working for most people in the world. The failure of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to move forward is one more example of a failed approach. The Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Atlantic version, TAFTA, are additional examples. The WTO and these trade agreements pursue a path that puts profits ahead of the necessities of the people and the planet. They have expanded the wealth divide, destroyed the environment and undermined the rights of workers. Unlike the spokesperson from the United States in the article below, we are pleased to see this failure. Our view is that an entirely new approach is needed to international trade. We need to change the goals of trade and the method of reaching agreements on trade. The new goals should be one of cooperation, not domination; it should put the people and planet before process. The approach to achieve trade for the benefit of people and planet should not be one of secrecy and participation by transnational corporations, as the current approach takes but rather one of transparency and participation of civil society in creating economic democracy. These negotiations are creating international laws, the people affected by those laws should participate in making them.

How Wall Street Turned America Into Incarceration Nation

The U.S. leads the world in prisoners with 2.27 million in jail and more than 4.8 million on parole. Minorities have been especially hard hit, forming 39.4% of the prison population, with one in three black men expected to serve time during their lifetimes. How is it that our land, supposedly the beacon of freedom and democracy for the rest of the world, puts so many of its own people into prison? We usually attribute the prisoner increase to a combination of overt racism and Nixon's war on drugs, followed by Rockefeller's "three strikes" legislation in New York, and then the 1984 Sentencing Reform Act with its mandatory sentences. While racism and these laws certainly provide ample opportunity to incarcerate millions for violating senseless prohibition laws, they do not tell the whole story. Racism was just as virulent, if not more so, long before the dramatic rise in prisoners set in during the 1980s and 1990s. Just because there are draconian laws on the books, it doesn't explain why they are so dutifully enforced. It also doesn't explain why so many are willing to risk prison, knowing the increasing odds of getting caught. If we dig deeper, we'll see that the rise in incarceration corresponds with the rise of financialization and the dramatic increase in Wall Street incomes.
