Big Media Mum On Syria Pundits’ Ties To Defense Industry

Media discourse in the buildup to potential U.S.-led attacks on Syria was monopolized by experts and think tanks with links to arms and intelligence industries. Despite this conflict of interest, these financial relationships were not disclosed in a vast majority of media appearances, the non-profit research organization Public Accountability Initiative revealed in areport released Friday. Twenty-two commentators presented as experts during the so-called corporate media debate about military attacks on Syria have ties to "large defense and intelligence contractors like Raytheon, smaller defense and intelligence contractors like TASC, defense-focused investment firms like SCP Partners, and commercial diplomacy firms like the Cohen Group," the report finds. Of 111 appearances in major media outlets, the ties of these 22 commentators were disclosed a total of 13 times. A majority of these commentators voiced support for a U.S.-led attack on Syria.

Former Halliburton Manager Pleads Guilty In Deepwater Horizon Disaster

Halliburton itself agreed in July to pay a $200,000 fine and undergo three years of probation over the matter. On the individual level, Badalamenti isn’t the first person to be charged with a crime in the Deepwater Horizon disaster. But he is the first to plead guilty, according to Time. Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine, both well site leaders for BP, face manslaughter charges for the 11 workers killed. Prosecutors accuse them of mishandling a key safety test and ignoring dangerously high pressure readings. David Rainey, a former BP executive, is charged with concealing the true extent of the oil spill from Congress, and former BP engineer Kurt Mix is charged with deleting text messages and voicemails related to the company’s handling of the spill.

Infographics: Why TransCanada Is Losing Keystone Pipeline Debate

Activists understand that in the land where no politician wants to be first, but all clamor to be second, controlling the epicenter of public opinion has never been more important. As such, they have transformed social media engagement into a force multiplier that swells their ranks; amplifies their messages; mobilizes support on local and national levels; and provides policy makers with a false sense of where public sentiment really lies. And activists’ successful domination of online sentiment isn’t just relegated to Keystone. Research conducted by my firm and others shows that activists are winning on hydraulic fracturing (fracking), arctic drilling in the ANWR, offshore drilling, coal, and even energy production tax credits. Congratulations to the activists, but where are the interested companies in this hyper-Democratic age?

Indigenous Nations At Forefront Of Conflict With Transnational Corporate Power

Idle No More is an indigenous-led movement, but it is not a movement exclusive to indigenous people. As Clayton Thomas-Muller, an organizer with Defenders of the Land and Idle No More, states, "We understand that the rise of the native rights-based strategic framework as an effective legal strategy supported by a social movement strategic framework is the last best effort not just for Indigenous People but for all Canadians and Americans to protect the commons ... from the for-profit agenda of the neoliberal free market strategists that have taken over our governments ... and indigenous peoples have been thrust into the forefront of global social movements not just because of our connection to the sacredness of Mother Earth and our traditional ecological knowledge and understanding of how to take care of the Earth as part of that sacred circle of life but also because our ancestors ... made sure we had the legal instruments to be able to confront the enemies of today and that is what Idle No More is doing in the US and Canada and across the world where Indigenous People continue to live under occupation and oppression."

Message From Mexico To Occupy Wall Street: Stop The TPP!

On behalf of all the families and individuals who are members of the Independent Workers and Peasants Urban and Popular Movement (MIOCUP CNPA MN) from the North East Mountains of Puebla State in Mexico, we want to say our Occupy Wall Street comrades in NY how deeply grateful we are with your support and fight to stop the disastrous Trans-Pacific Trade (TPP) that is just satisfying the interests of a small group of multi-millionaires who think of themselves as the chosen ones. They think they have been blessed by Heaven to decide on behalf of millions of millions of people who inhabit this planet, condemning the majority of the human race to poverty and death. We aggressively, soundly and totally reject the international ratification of the TPP and its effectiveness in Mexico because it is the most anti-democratic international tool of dispossession and exploitation to the nations that has been designed in the history of humanity, allowing multinational corporations’ rights to supersede the constitutional provisions of all the countries and the peoples’ rights.

Junk Food Lobbyists Sued For Money Laundering

In the final weeks leading up to Election Day, the debate over measure I-522 in Washington State is getting even uglier. As I recently explained, the Grocery Manufacturer Association, the nation's largest trade group for the processed food industry, has been flexing its muscle to oppose the labeling of genetically-engineered food, both at the federal and state levels. Now, a lawsuit brought by a non-profit called "Moms for Labeling" alleges that GMA crossed the line by not properly disclosing who is behind the whopping $7 million-plus the trade group has donated to the No on 522 campaign so far. The main goal of a lobbying organization like GMA is to pool the massive resources of its members, which include heavy hitters such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and General Mills; each has a huge stake in this fight.

November 2: March Against Corruption

The March Against Corruption is an international campaign to raise awareness about the corrupting influence of money and special interests in governance and public policy making; to provide a forum for people to organize and speak out against corruption; and to educate the public about the consequences of corruption. The March Against Corruption is not about right versus left, it’s about right versus wrong....Please note that we’re not using the term “march” just literally — we’re marching against corruption both off and online, wherever it exists! We’re marching against corruption in every way we can… whether it’s through our words, actions, poetry, music, art, graphics, social media…...

Chevron Fights Amazon Pollution Verdict In U.S. Court

"Two years after they were awarded 18 billion dollars by an Ecuadorian court for environmental damage caused by Chevron in the Amazonian rainforest, a group of indigenous villagers and their U.S. lawyer went on trial Tuesday in New York, accused by the oil company of bribery and racketeering. Chevron was found liable in 2011 for an ecological catastrophe caused by pollution released in the 1970s and 1980s by Texaco, which Chevron acquired in 2001 and for which they agreed to assume legal obligations. Chevron has refused to pay the penalty."

Acting With Impunity: The Case Of General Electric

If we dig deeper into the record, a broader pattern of corporate misbehavior emerges. Indeed, the Fort Edward factory is one of two GE plants that polluted the communities at Fort Edward and nearby Hudson Falls, as well as a 197-mile stretch of the Hudson River, with 1.3 million pounds of cancer-causing PCBs for several decades. When the extent of this environmental disaster began to be revealed in the 1970s, GE began a lengthy campaign to deny it and, later, a multimillion dollar public relations campaign to prevent remedial action by the Environmental Protection Administration. GE has produced other environmental disasters, as well. Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power site in Japan melted down and exploded on March 31, 2011. This was the world’s worst nuclear accident in three decades, and quickly spread radioactive contamination nearly 150 miles.

Profiting From The Poor: Outsourcing Social Services

Mississippi protestors had good reason to be concerned. The privatization of social services has in the past resulted in some spectacular failures. The Denver Post found a shocking pattern of abuse when it conducted an in-depth investigation of the privatization of Colorado's foster care system a decade ago. The Post reported that numerous children were molested, abused, and even died in foster home after the state started contracting with businesses that failed to ensure they were placed in safe homes. The state also paid three times as much to place a child in private foster care as it did in homes that were supervised by the counties. More recently, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels' attempt to transform the state into a privatized utopia failed spectacularly in the health and human services area.

Beyond The Spin, Some Facts About The Affordable Care Act

What we are hearing in the US is fear-mongering from extreme right-wing groups, who have gone so far as to shut down our government in their attempt to remove funding for the health law, and deceptions from Democrats and their front groups about the virtues of the ACA. This is what happens when a basic issue such as health care is determined by politics instead of policy. In fact, the ACA was born in a right-wing think tank, the Heritage Foundation, and is only supported by "progressives" because it was passed by a Democratic president. I suspect this manufactured confusion may sort itself out over time as more people discover that having health insurance in the US doesn't guarantee access to necessary care. In the meantime, I will try to cut through the spin and hyperbole to explain why the ACA is not a step in the right direction and what health care would look like if we implemented a publicly-financed "Medicare for All".

Pressure Builds On Nordstrom For Selling Ahava

Check out the YouTube station for Seattle’s performance investigators Credible Threat, who allied with Code Pink’s Stolen Beauty project have busted Nordstrom’s “social responsibility policies” wide open with a new video, published three days ago and titled, MUD IS A GRAY AREA: Talking with Nordstrom about Ahava and Occupation. Ahava is a cosmetics line that uses mud sourced from the occupied territories in the West Bank. Nordstrom sells the line. Many of the quotations in the video are taken from documents at the Stolen Beautywebsite, including documentation from the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem.

Nader to Feinstein: Stop the USPS Sell Off

Ralph Nader wants Senator Diane Feinstein (D-California) to introduce legislation to put a halt to the sell off of United States Postal Service (USPS) buildings around the country. In a letter, Nader calls on Feinstein to “introduce and champion a bill to immediately suspend all sales of postal properties throughout the country.” Why Feinstein? As it turns out, Feinstein’s husband, Richard Blum, is chairman of the C.B. Richard Ellis Group (CBRE), which has an exclusive contract to negotiate the sale of USPS real estate. Investigative journalist Richard Byrne has dug into CBRE’s and Blum’s activities and written an expose, most recenty in e-book form, titled: Going Postal: U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Husband Sells Post Offices to His Friends, Cheap.

VIDEO: Acronym TV Weekly Resistance Report 009

One of the most telling poll numbers of this current moment in time is 10%. That, according to a CNN poll taken before the government shutdown, registers the lowest approval rating ever for congress. As unpopular as Congress is, a recent poll from the Brookings Institution reveals that there is something that may soon be even more unpopular: Capitalism.

This week, the five stores covered in the Resistance Report explore some of the reasons why.

North American Tour Of Documentary, Bhopali, And Survivor-Activist, Sanjay Verma

The Bhopal gas disaster has resulted in 25,000 deaths to date, and currently affects over 500,000 people. Chronic health problems stemming from initial exposure to MIC (including sickness in the respiratory, ocular, neurological, neuromuscular, gynecological and reproductive systems) continue to plague survivors 29 years later. Moreover, unsafe dumping practises by UCC have led to soil/groundwater contamination in 22 communities. Perhaps most tragic is the mutagenic effect of MIC exposure, leading to higher rates of developmental disabilities and congenital malformations amongst the children of survivors. Despite this, survivors have sustained a 29 year struggle for justice. The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, North America alongside Amnesty International Canada/USA, the Association for India’s Development (AID) and our local allies are launching a North American screening tour of the award-winning documentary, Bhopali, accompanied by survivor-activist, Sanjay Verma.
