But what can these left parties accomplish? Can they really roll back regressive taxes and restore funding for education, health care, and social services? Can they bypass austerity programs to jumpstart economies weighted down by staggering jobless numbers? Or are they trapped in a game with loaded dice and marked cards?

As I sat to write this, a volunteer nurse from Denmark described her night shift to me, driving up and down the coast of Chios, turning off all lights with the other volunteers in order to be able to see the refugee boats come in. They stand outside, listening for the smallest sounds over the beating of the merciless winter waves. Another volunteer from Lesbos told me that they sometimes receive as many as 800 to 1,000 people on the Greek island during such night shifts.

Thousands of people marched across France Saturday to protest the country's nearly three month old state of emergency. Rallies took place in around 70 cities, including the capital Paris, where organizers said more than 20,000 people took to the streets. Police put turnout at closer to 5000. Many protesters said the state of emergency had curbed civil rights while doing little to improve security.

By transmogrifying immigrants into villains – enemies of both the welfare state and Swedish values – the party has gleaned over 25 percent of the popular vote.

Refugees Sew Mouths Shut In Protest At Border Crossing

At least six Iranians have sewed their lips together, hoping to persuade Macedonia to open the border and let them through on their way to western Europe. They are joined by hundreds of other halted migrants, most hailing from Iran, Morocco, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who have been barred entry to Europe as a result of countries tightening their borders following the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris. Last week, Slovenia announced it would only admit immigrants fleeing the chaos in Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan.
