Burkina Faso Is A Place Of Dignity, Not Expulsion

“Burkina Faso is a place of dignity … not a place of expulsion,” said its Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s deportation deal. Deeming Trump’s proposal for Burkina Faso to accept foreign nationals he is deporting from the US as “indecent”, he said it was “totally contrary to the value of dignity, which is … the very essence of the vision of Captain Ibrahim Traoré.” Coming to power in 2022 after the ouster of Roch Kaboré’s unpopular regime, propped up by France, Traoré expelled French troops, consolidating his mass support in the country. His avowed anti-imperialism and pan-Africanism have won him admirers across Africa and Black and Afro-descendant communities in the West.

ICE Carries Out Second Raid On New York Farm As Workers Unionize

Agents with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out another raid at Lynn-Ette & Sons Farms in western New York on August 14, detaining seven farmworkers on their way to work. The raid came just months after another ICE raid, where 14 workers were detained. The United Farm Workers labor union has condemned the raid at the farm that the UFW has been actively organizing in since 2022. Of the 14 workers detained at the May 2 raid, ten were ultimately deported. UFW Secretary Treasurer Armando Elenes labels the raids as “shameful employer complicity in the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate legal protections and lower wages for farm workers.”

Trump To Open Country’s Largest Immigrant Detention Center

The US Department of Defense has awarded a contract worth USD 1.26 billion to the Virginia-based company Acquisition Logistics LLC to build a sprawling short-term ICE detention center in the Fort Bliss army base in El Paso, Texas. The center is set to have a capacity of 5,000 detainees which would make it the largest immigrant detention center in the country. The facility, much like the newly-minted “Alligator Alcatraz”, will be composed entirely of tents and temporary structures, raising the alarm about potential conditions of detention in the scorching dry heat of western Texas.

Minnesotans Denounce ICE Kidnappings At Federal Court

St. Paul, MN – Hundreds attended a press conference on Monday, July 14 organized by the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) to demand ICE stop kidnapping people after immigration hearings in the federal courthouse. The press conference was called in response to what MIRAC members witnessed a few days before while they accompanied a community member to immigration court. While there, they watched as Judge Brian Sardelli dismissed all cases. Judge Sardelli has a denial rate of 78.4% reported in 2024 compared to the national average of 57.7%.

Donald Trump is perhaps unique among modern presidents in his determination to fulfill his very retrograde vision for the United States. He goes beyond the cajoling and arm twisting that other presidents were known for, and dispenses with precedent, the Congress and the law itself in order to realize a key part of his vision, getting as many Global South immigrants out of the U.S. as he possibly can. He was quite serious about enacting a mass deportation policy. Immigrants attempting to follow the law and legalize their status are set upon in courtrooms by masked agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and are taken to detention facilities.

The second term of US President Donald Trump has been full of commentary about other nations – both official and unofficial – that often signals the administration’s intentions, even without formal policy declarations. In turn, when Trump has thrown darts at certain governments, his statements immediately become headlines that spark debates – and at times uncertainties – in the countries he addresses. Latin America has been one of Trump’s favorite targets. One need only recall that during his first election campaign, he said that Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras were breeding grounds for criminals.

New Tensions Between Bogotá And Washington Over Coup Plot Reveal

A new wave of tensions has emerged between Bogotá and Washington. Both Petro and Trump have announced that they are withdrawing their respective chargé d’affaires in each other’s countries in the aftermath of reports of a possible coup plot against Gustavo Petro. According to a report published by the Spanish newspaper, El País on June 29, Álvaro Leyva, the former minister of foreign affairs in Petro’s government, met with the Republican congressman of the United States, Mario Díaz-Balart, to discuss an early exit of Petro’s progressive government. Petro and his supporters were quick to respond, denouncing the plot and calling for clarification of the events. Charges have also been filed against Leyva.

Activists Challenge Company As Stores Become Site Of Ice Raids

“ICE has been kidnapping day laborers from Home Depots across the country,” said Jorge Torres, an immigrant rights organizer with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), as he led a march of dozens of activists through a Home Depot in East Windsor, New Jersey. “We are sending a message from New Jersey, all the way to Los Angeles, that we will not allow Home Depot to keep cooperating with ICE.” On July 3, dozens of immigrant rights activists protested at a Home Depot store in East Windsor and to deliver a letter of demands to the store’s manager. “We no longer feel safe going into your Home Depot store,” said an immigrant rights activist, reading from the demands letter.

As ICE Raids Intensify, Trained Volunteers Patrol LA Streets

The day after families across the country gathered to celebrate Father’s Day, Francisco Romero huddled at dawn with 10 volunteers in a South Los Angeles parking lot. The group was preparing to patrol the neighborhood for signs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity. There was a heaviness in the atmosphere, despite the comradery and smiles. During the group huddle, some reflected on the difficulty celebrating Father’s Day while families across the city were being separated by ICE. Another volunteer mentioned viral videos from the prior weekend showing apparent ICE presence in the nearby city of Bell, including “snatch and grabs,” in which unmarked vehicles surrounded pedestrians suspected of being undocumented and ICE officers pulled them inside.

Immigrant Communities Organize Against ICE In The South Bronx

June 21 was one of the hottest days this year, but that did not stop dozens of immigrant rights leaders of all generations from organizing a street meeting in the South Bronx, telling stories and trading tips on how to address the crisis of ICE raids in their communities. These community members were marking the “Binational Day for Peace and Justice,” a call to action for organizations, collectives, and community leaders in Mexico and the US promoted by the organization Global Exchange. “Since January 20, we’ve seen an increase in the attacks from ICE agents, in collaboration many times with FBI and other agencies, that are terrorizing our communities.

Echoing The 2006 ‘Day Without An Immigrant,’ Call For Mass ‘Sickout’

As the Trump administration continues to ramp up its regime of mass deportations, grassroots organizers are growing the immigrant rights movement in opposition. Last week, Trump promised to pause some ICE raids at workplaces over concerns from employers in the farming and hospitality industries. However, this week, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan confirmed that the raids will in fact continue. “We’re going to continue to do worksite enforcement operations, even on farms and hotels, but based on a prioritized basis. Criminals come first,” Homan told reporters on June 19.

ICE Detainees At Delaney Hall Rise Up Over Inhumane Conditions

Reports indicate that around 50 detainees at Delaney Hall, Trump’s newly opened ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey, staged an uprising against inhumane conditions on Thursday, June 13. According to reports by New Jersey law enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security, and detainees’ lawyers, four men escaped the facility amid the unrest. There had reportedly been discontent at the ICE detention facility for days due to inhumane conditions, including reports of insufficient food, scalding hot undrinkable tap water, and lack of staff. “We had some members of our community come out and tell us that their family members were not being given food,” said immigrant rights organizer Ana Paola Pazmiño, the executive director of Resistencia en Accion NJ.

Movement Against ICE Raids Spreads To Cities Across The US

US President Donald Trump sent in the military to suppress anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles this past weekend, but instead of stopping the protest movement in its tracks, demonstrations have taken place in cities across the entire United States to reject Trump’s immigration policies and crackdown. Since protests erupted against immigration raids in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon, they have spread to cities throughout the US, including New York City, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Boston, and Atlanta. As the Trump administration scrambles to meet mass deportations quotas, with officials ramping up the immigration enforcement arrest quota to 3,000 per day, ICE operations have escalated to new heights.

Swell Of Support For Pro-Palestine Student Yunseo Chung

Following a court hearing on Thursday, May 29, a federal judge extended an order blocking Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents from arresting 21-year-old college student Yunseo Chung. Chung, like fellow Columbia students and graduates Mahmoud Khalil, Mohsen Mahdawi, and Ranjani Srinivasan, has been targeted by the Trump administration amid its broader attacks on immigrants, institutions of higher education, and the pro-Palestine movement. The temporary restraining order on Chung’s detention by ICE is now extended until her next court hearing on June 5.

Hundreds March Outside ICE Facility Where Mahmoud Khalil Remains

On the morning of Thursday, May 22, detained Columbia graduate and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil had an immigration hearing after US officials allowed him to meet his 1-month-old son, Deen, for the first time. As Khalil testified in an immigration court in rural Jena, Louisiana, dozens rallied outside of the immigration detention and court building, protesting against the continued detention of Khalil. Khalil has been in ICE custody since he was arrested outside of his own home in New York City on March 8. In the months since his arrest, support for Khalil’s release has not abated, with supporters rallying on Thursday in cities across the country, including New York City.
