Mauna Kea Protests Aren’t New. They’re Part Of A Long Fight Against Colonialism.

Something big and beautiful is happening in Hawaiʻi. Currently, hundreds of Native Hawaiians and allies are camped at the base of Mauna Kea, a mountain located on Moku o Keawe, or Hawaiʻi Island. They are organizing to protect the summit of Mauna Kea from the construction of a proposed Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). This project has been in the works for years, and has drawn opposition from Native Hawaiians who object to the environmental and cultural impact of a massive 18-story, five-acre telescope complex on sacred land...

Israeli Forces Arrest 102 Palestinian Workers

The Israeli occupation forces on Sunday morning detained 102 Palestinian workers who allegedly were not holding permits to work in the 1948 occupied Palestinian territories. Israeli media sources said that the Israeli forces arrested 102 Palestinian workers at al-Dahiriya checkpoint, south of al-Khalil, while they were attempting to enter the 1948 occupied territories for work without having the necessary licenses. The West Bank Palestinian citizens who work in the 1948 occupied Palestinian territories always face the risk of being shot or arrested by the Israeli forces under the pretext of lacking the necessary work permits which Israel rarely issues.

Palestine Liberation Requires National Unity, Democratic Representation & International Solidarity

Those who are still hoping that the new American agenda on Palestine and Israel is temporary, or reversible, should abandon this false hope. Washington’s complete adoption of Israel’s messianic, extremist policies regarding Occupied Palestine has been a long time in the making. And it is here to stay. Despite the unmistakable clarity in the American political discourse regarding Palestine, the Palestinian Authority (PA) is still trapped in a 25-year long, ineffectual political paradigm.

“Go Forth And Lie” Israel Rolls Out Mandatory Course For Students Travelling Abroad

Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, recently demanded that the Israeli Education Ministry halt an online course that was designed to prepare young Israelis traveling abroad to be “good ambassadors.” The content, particularly regarding anti-semitism and BDS (the Boycott, Divest, Sanctions movement), is so offensive to Arabs and Muslims that a school in Nazareth canceled an exchange program for high school students from the city to go to Sweden, rather than having the students exposed to the content of the course.

How Do You Celebrate A Flawed Nation?

As the Fourth of July rolls around, I think plenty of us are eager for barbecues, corn on the cob, watermelon, and fireworks, but our feelings about our country are somewhat more complicated. How do you love and celebrate a country that’s so obviously flawed? A country that’s currently committing atrocities against innocent children? Is criticizing America unpatriotic? Some would say it is. I say no. For me, loving this country means making it better. It means taking a good hard look at our mistakes, learning from the ones in the past, and correcting the ones in the present.

World Refugee Day: Palestinians Keep Their Right Of Return Alive Through Hope, Resistance

The United Nations’ World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20, should not merely represent a reminder of “the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.” It should also be an opportunity for the international community to truly understand and actively work towards finding a sustainable remedy to forced displacement, for no woman, man or child should be forced to endure such grueling, shattering and humiliating experience in the first place.

Anti-Occupation Coalition Grows Stronger In The Face Of Israeli Military Violence

When diaspora Jews and those living in Israel join with Palestinians, they forge a more powerful and just movement to end the occupation. I watched the Israeli Defense Forces throw several stun grenades — one right after the other — deep into a crowd of my friends earlier this month. I saw people dear to me get choked by soldiers, thrown forcefully onto the ground and dragged away by their limbs. Following this, the army arrested 17 people — including many Jewish activists from around the world, two Palestinian journalists and three Palestinian residents from the area.

Facing The Facts: Israel Cannot Escape ICC Jurisdiction

The Chief Military Advocate General of the Israeli army, Sharon Afek, and the US Department of Defense General Counsel, Paul Ney, shared a platform at the ‘International Conference on the Law of Armed Conflict’, which took place in Herzliya, Israel between May 28-30. Their panel witnessed some of the most misconstrued interpretations of international law ever recorded. It was as if Afek and Ney were literally making up their own law on warfare and armed conflict, with no regard to what international law actually stipulates.

Activists In Germany Disrupt Israeli Intelligence Officer

Israeli Major Arye Sharuz Shalicar was promoting his new book The New German Anti-Semite at a high school in Aurich in northwest Germany, on 17 May, when two activists, one German and one Israeli, interrupted his speech. “As soon as we got word of the upcoming events we tried to intervene,” Christoph Glanz told The Electronic Intifada. “Shalicar has written two more or less autobiographical books which contain a lot of slander, character assassination and at their core claim that anti-Semitism is everywhere and most prominent among leftists, Muslims and self-hating Jews.”

Parallels In Black And Palestinian Struggles

Johnny E. Williams specializes in social movements, political sociology, cultural sociology, racism, science and religion. Professor Williams’ primary area of research investigates how culture (i.e., shared beliefs, values and meaning systems) sustains and challenges social order. My recent visit to Palestine clarified how Palestinian and black oppression is an integral part of an integrated global politico-economic structure of white racism that shares similar subjugating techniques such as criminalization, extrajudicial killings, and mass imprisonment.

View The Frontline Documentary On Gaza That PBS Pulled

Recently, hundreds of PBS stations around the United States were scheduled to broadcast a powerful new Frontline documentary: One Day in Gaza. But viewers tuning in found that it had been replaced by a slightly updated Frontline report on Robert Mueller that had been broadcast two months before and had been streaming online ever since. PBS no longer has the Gaza film listed on its schedule. The documentary was to be aired on the one-year anniversary of events that took place on May 14, 2018, when tens of thousands of men, women, and children in Gaza gathered with the intention of deploying the tactics Gandhi had used in freeing India from British control.

Israel Escalates Deadly Attacks In Gaza

Israel’s bombardment of the occupied Gaza Strip entered its third day on Sunday. By late evening on Sunday, Israeli strikes had killed 19 Palestinians that day, bringing the toll to at least 27 Palestinians slain since Israel escalated its lethal attacks on the territory on Friday. Health officials in Gaza continued to announce new deaths on an almost hourly basis, including late Sunday night Amani al-Madhoun, a 33-year-old woman who was pregnant. She is the second pregnant woman to die in the context of the current escalation...

Notre Dame Of Gaza: Our Mosques And Churches Are Also Burning

As the 300-foot spire of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris tragically came tumbling down on live television, my thoughts ventured to Nuseirat Refugee Camp, my childhood home in the Gaza Strip. Then, also on television, I watched as a small bulldozer hopelessly clawed through the rubble of my neighborhood mosque. I grew up around that mosque. I spent many hours there with my grandfather, Mohammed, a refugee from historic Palestine. Before grandpa became a refugee, he was a young Imam in a small mosque in his long-destroyed village of Beit Daras.

Jewish Activists Arrested Protesting Birthright In Midtown

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Jewish activists protesting Birthright Israel, the organization that sponsors free trips for people with Jewish heritage to Israel, were arrested during a Friday morning protest in front of the organization's Midtown offices, according to activists and police. Protesters stood in the crosswalk of Third Avenue and East 45th Street to prevent any vehicles from accessing the block and sat in front of the entrance to Birthright's offices to block access to the building. The protest was organized by a group called IfNotNow, which has called on Birthright to educate its participants on the Israeli government's occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.

Israelis Protest In Tel Aviv For The Right Of Return And In Solidarity With The Great March Of Return

In a historic first, around 300 Israelis protested in Tel Aviv for the right of return and in solidarity with the Great March of Return against the siege of Gaza. In response to a request from the committee of the Great March of Return in Gaza protesters from around the country gathered to demonstrate in front of Hakirya military base and Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv, in solidarity with the Great March of Return in Gaza.
