2019 is being called the year of protest. Citizens across the globe are galvanizing, in large part over the nexus of corruption, inequality, and a sense that governments and political elites are unaccountable and unresponsive to their needs. “People are saying ‘pay attention to us, you are there to serve us,’” observed Nancy Lindborg, President of the United States Institute of Peace. This wave of people power shows that governments—whether they are democratic, semi-democratic, or authoritarian—are not immune to collective civic pressure.

Roger Hallam is of course right in his short book, Common Sense for the 21st Century: Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown and Social Collapse. While some portion of humanity heaps scorn on the victims of the fossil fuel propaganda who deny climate science, only a much smaller portion points out the equally delusional and disastrous denial of the need for nonviolent revolution. Facts are facts, as Hallam points out. The current political systems cannot change fast enough. They have to be overturned.

I travel frequently and have seen the many monuments to soldiers and to wars that occupy our city squares and parks. In the summer of 2005 my son James and I visited Washington, DC after he finished his first year of college. We made the standard tour of the city, visiting museums, the White House, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the newly dedicated National World War II Memorial. These memorials exist to reinforce the notion that war efforts or activities are highly valued and rewarded by our society.

It’s training in standing up and speaking out — two prized freedoms in the United States. And it gives kids an experience they’re going to need again and again, probably in situations that are far less fun. Young people just a few years older than these kids are staging school walk-outs over the lack of gun control, the climate crisis, the overuse of standardized tests, racist police shootings and more. They’re holding occupations to overturn racist school policies. They’re taking a knee along with athlete Colin Kaepernick. They’re organizing to protect their friends who are undocumented students. To this generation, the ability to make change is a survival skill for a world in crisis. These are the life skills they’ll need to create a world that works for them — and everyone.
