State Repression

A Youth Revolt In Madagascar Is Shaking The Government

Unbearable power cuts and a lack of drinking water are just the tip of the iceberg. Popular anger has erupted in Madagascar as the population grows weary of shortages and failing basic public services. Power cuts can last for up to 12 hours, which can lead to cuts in drinking water supply on an island already suffering from severe water stress. Calls for action quickly mobilized thousands of people. The crackdown was also very harsh: to date, according to the UN, there have been 22 deaths and more than 100 injuries, some of them very serious. Since September 25, an organization calling itself Gen Z Mada has organized spontaneous demonstrations in most of the country’s cities, particularly in Antananarivo, the country’s capital. In response to crackdowns, students and young people from the big cities have also gathered in front of one of the capital’s universities to denounce the government’s authoritarian turn and the police’s violent repression.

Chris Hedges Report: Trump’s Crackdown On Anti-War Activists

Medea Benjamin and CODEPINK, the organization she cofounded, are synonymous with accosting power in the United States. Their fearless confrontations with the nation’s most prominent and powerful politicians in the halls of Congress, often seen through viral videos, are a stark embodiment of the First Amendment. Despite over 20 years of activism and consistent critique of America’s representatives over their subservience to the military industrial complex and other big money interests, their ability to have these conversations is beginning to dwindle. Benjamin joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the current moment in American politics, which sees free speech sitting on a knife’s edge following the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the American political class’s continued support of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Chris Hedges: We Are All Antifa Now

Trump’s designation of the amorphous group antifa, which has no formal organization or structure, as a terrorist organization permits the state to charge us all as terrorists. The point is not to go after members of antifa, short for anti-fascist. It is to go after the last vestiges of dissent. When Barack Obama oversaw the coordinated national campaign to shut down the Occupy encampments, antifa — so named because they dress in black, obscure their faces, move as a unified mass and seek physical confrontations with police – was the excuse. “I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post.

How The Enemies Of Our Movement Are Using The Kirk Assassination

There have been many analyses that have been put forth that Trump and his minions represent an attempt at a fascist takeover at worst, and a turning back of the clock in terms of the trade union movement, the women’s movement, the Black liberation movement, every progressive movement that has occurred in the United States over the last couple of centuries at best. They’re attempting to turn back the clock on all of those movements to bring us to a point where we have no democratic rights whatsoever to organize and protest for systemic change or the progressive elimination of the status quo.  From their own declarations and proclamations, we know that Trump and his minions are racist to the core, anti-union to the core, anti-LGTBQ, anti-women, and anti-immigrant.

ICE Abducts Man Suing Off-Duty Police For Abusing Day Laborers

Even though President Donald Trump says he is pivoting from plans to deploy the National Guard in Chicago — now eyeing Memphis as his next target — Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers appear to still be escalating operations throughout the area, with devastating consequences. Willian Gimenez, a day laborer, was reportedly abducted outside of a barbershop in Little Village, a neighborhood in southwest Chicago, by ICE agents on Friday. The Latino Union of Chicago and Raise the Floor Alliance organized a news conference with immigration rights advocates, public officials and labor groups there in solidarity like Arise Chicago, the Chicago Workers Collaborative and Workers Center for Racial Justice, who all gathered with Gimenez’s friends and family outside of an ICE facility in Broadview to demand his release.

Peace Vigil Future Unclear As Trump Takes Down And Removes Tent

Washington DC—On Sunday afternoon, the Peace Vigil manager, Philipos Melaku-Bello reclined in the sun under a big red umbrella at the William Thomas Memorial Peace Vigil, reflecting on the whirlwind of events that occurred over the last three days. Just hours earlier, the 44 year old Peace Vigil was raided by U.S. National Park Police which tore down and confiscated the blue tarp tent, its frame, and cinder block anchors. As word spread of the raid, scores of longtime DC activists, residents, and supporters sprang into action. They rolled in throughout the day, like an anonymous army of loyal supernumeraries, to sit with and support Philipos and the other activists who staff the Peace Vigil. Among them were attorneys, activists, friends, supporters, and former Vigil staff members.

UK Police Raids Home Of Palestine Action Supporters

Counterterrorism police in the UK arrested five members of Defend Our Juries (DOJ) in dawn raids on 2 September, just hours before the group was due to announce details of a mass protest in London. The press conference, which had been set to confirm that the threshold for Saturday’s action had been met, was postponed until Wednesday after UK police raided the homes of the five DOJ spokespeople, including former government lawyer Tim Crosland and law student Paddy Friend. DOJ said those detained were “key spokespeople,” including former government lawyer Tim Crosland and law student Paddy Friend. Witnesses reported that Friend was arrested under section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 for hosting a Zoom call with campaign members.

The Attack On Palestine Chronicle

The Palestine Chronicle is not a militant organization. It is a modest, independent publication, sustained by small donations and animated by a singular mission: to bear witness. It tells the untold stories of Palestine, documenting dispossession, resistance and the endurance of a people condemned to silence. In a media landscape dominated by powerful conglomerates repeating the language of governments, the Chronicle insists on a journalism of proximity — grounded in daily lives, in the rubble of Gaza, in voices otherwise erased. Its true offense, in the eyes of its detractors, is not invention but truth. At the heart of this endeavor stands Ramzy Baroud. His career is the antithesis of clandestine.

DC Against Trump Coalition Shuts Down Racist Curfew Zone

Washington, DC – Before organizers from the DC Against Trump Coalition (DCAT) even finished setting up for their August 23 rally at 14th and U Streets in Northwest Washington DC, community members began spontaneously chanting “Fuck Trump!” Anti-Trump sentiment has been sky-high in Washington, DC since August 11, when Trump issued an executive order sweeping away the city’s home rule powers, federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department and flooding the city with federal law enforcement and National Guard troops. To capture that sentiment and turn it into action against Trump’s racist occupation, DCAT called a rally at the city’s “curfew zone,” a location where law enforcement targets Black minors found after 8 p.m.

Community Defense Against The Military Occupation Of Our Cities

On August 11, the Trump administration announced the deployment of national guard troops and the federal takeover of the police department in Washington, DC. This follows military troops being deployed to Los Angeles and ICE agents snatching people throughout the country. Last week, the Pentagon also announced the creation of a 600-member national guard unit ready to deploy to cities within an hour when there are protests. Clearing the FOG speaks with Erica Caines of the Black Alliance for Peace about the checkpoints and patrols in DC, how this fits into the long history of policing mainly black and brown communities and how people are organizing community self-defense and mutual aid. She also discusses the demand to disqualify the United States and Israel from FIFA and the Olympic games.

Bulletin On Domestic Militarism And Repression

The strategy is clear, as well as the desperation. Domestic repression in the U.S. colonial/capitalist core is imperative to support the aggressive militarism abroad, the periphery, in the form of wars of aggression, political subversion, economic sanctions, and genocide that have become the consciously and intentionally chosen tools of a rapacious U.S. based global ruling class—a ruling class that is unable to rule in the old way. Yet, it's more than willing to blow up the world and sacrifice millions of people to maintain the predatory material basis for its white supremacist class rule. The irreconcilable contradictions of the neoliberal order that produced the dramatic swing to the right represented by the warmongering of the Obama administration and later succeeded by Donald Trump and Joe Biden, confirmed for the Black Alliance for Peace that its analysis that predicted an inevitable dependency on force and violence by the U.S. rulers domestically and globally was essentially correct.

Washington DC Wakes Up Packed With Federal Agents And National Guard

Since Wednesday night, hundreds of federal agents and National Guard members have been patrolling the streets of Washington, D.C., after President Donald Trump placed the city’s police under federal control. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) set up checkpoints in several areas of the city and increased patrols in shifts covering 24 hours a day. On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said 19 agencies were part of a task force created by Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Pentagon To Create ‘Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force’

The Department of Defense is planning to create a rapid response force of National Guard troops to quickly deploy to American cities where protests or unrest are occurring. On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported that it obtained documents showing the Pentagon is creating a “Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force.” “The plan calls for 600 troops to be on standby at all times so they can deploy in as little as one hour,” the outlet explained. “They would be split into two groups of 300 and stationed at military bases in Alabama and Arizona, with purview of regions east and west of the Mississippi River, respectively.” One hundred troops at each base would be on standby to deploy within an hour, while the entire quick force would begin operations within 12 hours.

Haitians, Kenyans Both Fighting Neo-Colonial Representatives Of US-Led Imperialism

Since 2021, the Black Alliance for Peace Haiti/Americas Team has tracked the deepening crisis of imperialism in Haiti, in particular how imperialist forces and neocolonial puppets have worked to suppress and eliminate the organizing of popular movements and the will of the Haitian people. Over the last four years, this crisis has impacted nations around the globe, in particular Kenya.  This summer marks the one-year anniversary of Kenya’s youth-led uprising against the IMF-backed Finance Bill of 2024. Instead of reckoning with the demands of a generation that has endured skyrocketing inflation, police violence, and mass unemployment, President William Ruto has once again unleashed the full force of state repression.

Chris Hedges Report: The End Of Academic Freedom

The gutting of public funding for higher education in the United States has led to the takeover of universities by private donors, many of whom are Zionist entities and billionaires. As a result, universities have become, as guest Dr. Maura Finkelstein calls them, “banks and real estate development companies that offer classes.” As demonstrated by Finkelstein’s story, this new paradigm of higher education has pushed aside democratic values and academic freedom. In January 2024, as a result of a McCarthyist-style crackdown on pro-Palestinian faculty, Finkelstein was fired from her position as a tenured associate professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Muhlenberg College.
