Call To Action: Demand Democracy, Global Actions Against Toxic Trade Deals

All of these trade agreements share the same fundamental principle that profits are more important than the health and needs of people and the planet. They are destroying local economies and public infrastructure in order to establish a global neo-liberal economic system that privatizes all goods and services. These agreements grant transnational corporations the power to change laws even down to the local level and challenge court decisions in their own tribunal that operates outside of sovereign judicial systems and cannot be challenged by domestic courts. On December 3, we call on all allies for fair trade, peace and justice to gather in a public space at noon and declare global resistance to these toxic trade agreements. We will not obey secret deals made by transnational corporations that defy public interests and desires and destroy hard-won protections of people, workers and the environment.

The Corporate Plot That Obama and Corporate Lobbyists Don’t Want You to Know About

A US-led trade deal is currently being negotiated that could increase the price of prescription drugs, weaken financial regulations and even allow partner countries to challenge American laws. But few know its substance. The pact, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), is deliberately shrouded in secrecy, a trade deal powerful people, including President Obama, don’t want you to know about. More than 130 members of Congress have asked the White House for greater transparency about the negotiations and were essentially told to go fly a kite. While most of us are in the dark about the contents of the deal, which Obama aims to seal by year end, corporate lobbyists are in the know about what it contains. And some vigilant independent watchdogs are tracking the negotiations with sources they trust, including Dean Baker and Yves Smith, who join Moyers & Company this week.

Revolution’s Matchstick: The Trans-Pacific Partnership

Rolling down the corporate-political assembly line is a trade deal so treasonous to the peoples of the world that it should serve as revolution's matchstick. The treaty is secret, but one fact is well known: the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement is being negotiated by transnational corporations without a single US legislator present. Each time I hear this, my eyes blink in disbelief. Without a single legislator present . . . without their presence at negotiations, without so much as seeing a draft of the deal, and most treacherously, without objection or outcry at their exclusion! The President has requested our legislators to "fast track the TPP", which would allow him to sign the deal prior to sending it to Congress for approval or disapproval. If they agree to this, then Congress eschews its right - and its responsibility - to reject parts of the trade deal and reopen negotiations. This complicity of the part of our legislators sinks an iron weight in my gut.

Madison City Unanimously Passes Resolution Opposing Trans-Pacific Partnership

The Trans Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement has been in the process of negotiation since 2008 (in secret). Countries involved are the United States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. If approved by Congress, it would be the largest so-called “free trade” agreement ever, comprising 40% of world trade. Since NAFTA, international trade agreements have been less about tariffs, customs duties and import taxes than about deregulating transnational corporations. The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) takes this a big step forward. The implementation legislation will include not only the text of the trade treaty—but also any changes to federal statutes that might be in conflict with the TPP as agreed upon.

Coalition to Congress: Don’t Fast-Track the TPP

Slamming the Obama administration's "complete lack of transparency in negotiating the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)" trade agreement, a coalition of public interest groups urged members of Congress to reject the president's request for the ability to fast-track the deal. Last month, Obama said he would be pushing for Trade Promotion Authority—legislation that would allow him to fast-track trade agreements by giving Congress a yes or no vote but taking away powers to amend, and which Jim Hightower once referred to as "a legislative laxative that's bad for the Constitution." The authority would prevent congressional ability to push for fixes to what Politico described as "the biggest free-trade deal in history — a pact involving 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, dwarfing NAFTA — and remaking global trade policy for a generation," and what Public Citizen's Lori Wallach described bluntly as "NAFTA on steroids."

Corporations Using Foreign Tribunals To Attack Domestic Court Rulings

Should an international tribunal of three private attorneys, sitting outside of any domestic legal system, have the power to overrule domestic courts? That’s the question addressed in the recent analysis, “Investment Agreements versus the Rule of Law?,” published on UNCTAD’s Investment Policy Hub by Todd Tucker, Gates Scholar at the University of Cambridge’s Centre of Development Studies. The piece highlights the little-known but creeping practice of corporations asking foreign tribunals to second-guess domestic court decisions not in their favor and to order taxpayer payment as compensation. These tribunals are the product of the “investor-state” system, a little-known creation of “trade” and investment deals that empowers foreign corporations to skirt domestic courts and directly challenge governments before extrajudicial tribunals for policies and decisions that they claim as undermining “future expected profits.”

Message From Mexico To Occupy Wall Street: Stop The TPP!

On behalf of all the families and individuals who are members of the Independent Workers and Peasants Urban and Popular Movement (MIOCUP CNPA MN) from the North East Mountains of Puebla State in Mexico, we want to say our Occupy Wall Street comrades in NY how deeply grateful we are with your support and fight to stop the disastrous Trans-Pacific Trade (TPP) that is just satisfying the interests of a small group of multi-millionaires who think of themselves as the chosen ones. They think they have been blessed by Heaven to decide on behalf of millions of millions of people who inhabit this planet, condemning the majority of the human race to poverty and death. We aggressively, soundly and totally reject the international ratification of the TPP and its effectiveness in Mexico because it is the most anti-democratic international tool of dispossession and exploitation to the nations that has been designed in the history of humanity, allowing multinational corporations’ rights to supersede the constitutional provisions of all the countries and the peoples’ rights.

Let’s Stop The International Plan To Censor The Internet; The TPP

The changes proposed by the TPP could seriously undermine citizens’ rights to participate in a free and open Internet. We know from leaked drafts that these draconian measures could criminalize your everyday use of the Internet, force service providers to collect and hand over your private data, and give old industry conglomerates more power to fine you for Internet use. As opposed to fostering a global forum in which citizens can engage with one another, the TPP would stifle any kind of innovation within the Internet community. Over 100,000 citizens from all across the Trans-Pacific region have made it clear that they’re against the TPP’s dangerous Internet censorship plan. As negotiations are set to wrap up by the end of this month, this really is the last chance for global citizens to let their decision-makers know that they will pay a hefty political price for supporting a deal that censors the Internet.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – Celebrate Being Part Of An Historic Transformation

This week, veterans and their allies in New York City marked the twelfth anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan by taking a stand against war and challenging New York’s unusual curfew on the Vietnam War Memorial. This protest was about protecting our rights to Freedom of Speech, Assembly and to petition for a redress of grievances as much as it was about opposing war. Tarak Kauff, one of the organizers of the protest, reports that one interesting outcome was that many police officers thanked the vets for doing what they were doing, showing solidarity with the action and apologizing for having to make arrests. When police understand a protest movement is working to make the world better for them and their families, we are on the right path to success. In Wisconsin, Governor Scott backed down in the face of constant protests and litigation and agreed the people had the right to protest in the Capitol Building without a permit.

Defeat Of TPP Beginning Of End Of US Hegemony?

Obama has been too busy pivoting to himself instead of pivoting to Asia, more specifically Bali, to offer his spin - but the fact is Washington wants to ram up a TPP over its "partners" under a tight deadline, the end of 2013, glossing over key "devil in the details" discussions over market access (sweet if you're a corporate behemoth) and intellectual property (corporate behemoths marketizing everything). It gets curioser and curioser when one is reminded that APEC at the beginning was very much a US Asia policy stalwart. I vividly remember covering the APEC summit in Bogor, Indonesia in 1994 - when an undisputed Bill Clinton seemed to be dictating the future of Asia-Pacific. That was a sort of "pivoting to Asia" before the fact - and totally under American terms. Then, after the pivoting was first announced by then US secretary of state Hillary Clinton in 2011, she spun it as the dawn of "America's Pacific century". This "Pacific century" seems to boil down, so far, to enforcing an already embattled TPP. Bantarto Bandoro, from the Indonesian Defense University, seemed to get closer to the real picture when he told the Jakarta Globe, "this could be the beginning of the end of American global dominance."

Exclusive: Flush The TPP Conversation With President Obama

President Barack Obama gave an exclusive interview to FlushTheTPP.org to discuss the massive trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The agreement, which has been negotiated for 3 and 1/2 years in secret by President Obama except for 600 corporate advisers who have put in the aggreement language that ensures the transnational corporations have more power than government's and that their profits come before the necessities of the people and the protection of the planet. In an unique approach President Obama has classified the text of the TPP. This have never been done with a trade agreement before the TPP. The TPP is the largest agreement since the WTO and will affect every aspect of your life including food, water, wages, Internet access, banking regulation and environmental laws among other areas. In fact laws like "Buy American" will be a violation because they are a trade barrier, as are laws that favor buying local or buying sustainable products.

TPP “Rigged” Trade Not “Free” Trade

People aren't going to want another NAFTA either, and this global corporate coup is NAFTA on steroids. This is going to be bad for our economy. It's not going to advance us in any significant way. It really--and as more people know about it, as Ron Kirk said, more people will oppose it. So that's why Obama is doing two things: keeping it secret and trying to get fast track authority in Congress. What that means is basically cutting Congress out. Now, under the Constitution, under the Commerce Clause, the Congress is responsible for trade, just like under the Constitution, when the Syrian war--the War Powers Act--Congress is responsible for war. Well, Congress is responsible for trade. And we want to go to Congress and say, take your responsibility. Don't give the power to a supreme executive. That's not what the Constitution says. The Constitution says, you are responsible for trade. You should demand to see this trade agreement, debate it, have hearings on it, allow witnesses, allow amendments. You should not be giving the power to President Obama. It's your responsibility.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – A Different Reaction To Disaster Capitalism

In her book “Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism,” Naomi Klein explains how crises are used by governments to distract and frighten people so that unpopular and exploitative policies can be pushed through It seems that now there is a different reaction disaster capitalism. Rather than disasters providing cover for the implementation of dangerous capitalist policies that lower wages and increase the wealth divide, the disasters being caused by these dangerous policies have woken the public and are leading to a more active and empowered people. People are taking initiative rather than waiting for leaders. Ahmed states, “People are really hungry actually for answers, hungry for solutions, hungry for alternatives, so really this is actually an unprecedented opportunity.

Next Steps To Stop Trans-Pacific Partnership: Join The Fair Trade Brigade!

On Tuesday, October 1, we begin our focus on Congress with the Fair Trade Brigade. If you can join us in Washington, DC for a Tuesday to be in the brigade, register here. We will have a visible presence, will speak with staffers and will track how members in the House are going to vote on Fast Track. If you can't make it to DC, then organize a local Fair Trade Brigade and meet with your member or a staffer to find out how they will vote. Let us know how the meeting goes by contacting Cassidy at Stopfasttrack@flushthetpp.org. We will track the results on FlushtheTPP.org. Our goal is 218 "no" votes. And for some fun, start planning now for the Halloween TPP Tuesday.

A Corporate Coup Of Different Order: Growing Resistance To Trans-Pacific Partnership

Transparency was supposed to be a White House priority from the very start. In his first inaugural address, when the world celebrated an historic and improbable election, Barack Obama made the case for how an open government was necessary to earn the trust of the people.[1] The next day, he issued a memo that asserted his commitment to creating an “unprecedented level of openness.”[2] And in February, more than four years later, President Obama claimed his to be “the most transparent administration in history.”[3] Perhaps the least publicized example of that statement’s dishonesty is the White House’s efforts to negotiate the biggest trade agreement since the mid 1990s in near-total secrecy.
