Extinction Rebellion Has Changed The Conversation, Time For Activists To Recognize That

There’s a new favourite topic of conversation in the UK community of activists who once self-defined as ‘the climate movement’: It’s new-to-the-scene Extinction Rebellion (XR), and what it’s getting wrong. In a series of posts, blogs, WhatsApps and drunken conversations at parties, we’ve raised concerns about how white XR is, how unstrategic XR is, how privileged, middle-class and frankly naive XR is. Then right in our faces, XR shut down key bits of London for over a week, with the promise of more to come, and they have since met with and convinced Labour to push a vote to declare a “climate emergency”.

Human Rights Outlaws Defending An Ancient Forest’

There is precious little ancient forest left in this world – and a patch in Northern California is quite literally on the chop block. A forest defender with Save the Mattole's Ancient Forest sits down with us to discuss their work, the disgusting tactics of the logging industry, the decades-long fight to protect Rainbow Ridge and the wooded road ahead.

To Parliament, And Beyond

At a monumental people’s assembly on Monday, rebels from across the UK came together to discuss how we’d move forward. Amazing ideas were shared, and were recorded to be visible here, here and here; we hope these ideas will also be seen in the shape of the plan going forwards. An important part of this plan was when and how to leave our last location at Marble Arch. The discussion of this question began on Monday afternoon, and was made extra pertinent by a police raid later that evening, and then another the following day. During the latter – and from a police-cordoned stage – a further people’s assembly was convened to address specifically this question.

Goldman Sachs’s European Headquarters Targeted By Climate-Change Activists

LONDON (Reuters) - Environmental activists held a protest outside Goldman Sachs’s European headquarters in London on Thursday in attempt to underline what they say is the role the finance industry in fuelling climate change. The protesters lay down on the road blocking traffic and chanted: “What do we want? Climate justice. When do we want it? Now.” The premises on Fleet Street, discreetly positioned behind an unmarked door and entrance foyer and manned by several security staff...

From Holy Thursday afternoon to Good Friday afternoon, about 20 people gathered in Washington, D.C. for a Faith and Resistance retreat and public witness that was organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker and held at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church. Those who participated in the retreat/witness were members of Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, Jonah House, the Atlantic Life Community and students from Loras College from Iowa.

Woman On A 17-Day Hunger Strike To Save Southern Resident Orcas

OLYMPIA — Lanni Johnson is a 71-year-old woman who has been sitting in front of the Capitol Building in Olympia for the past 10 days on a hunger strike. Johnson said Tuesday that the government is taking too long to solve the problem of declining food supply for the Southern Resident orcas. “I’m here because I believe that while we twiddle our fingers and push a lot of paper around and have many, many meetings, we are going to watch the Southern Resident orca go extinct,” Johnson said. She sits outside from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day with a sign that reads, “Solidarity with starving Southern Resident Orcas. Breach the Dams! Now!”

A Toxic Breakup, A Sinking State & A Dirty Energy Project Even The Nazis Didn’t Want

Breaking up from the abusive relationship with oil and gas is no easy task – but several communities in Louisiana have started divorce proceedings. Meanwhile, lawmakers push to keep the abuser at home while the state quite literally disappears into the blue, oil-slicked abyss. Finally, two community organizers join us to talk about their current fight against a dirty energy project so horrific not even the Nazis wanted anything to do with it!

Why Activists Fail – OpEd

Despite enormous ongoing effort over more than a thousand years, during and since the formation and shaping of the modern world, and as the number of issues being contested has steadily increased, activists of many types have made insufficient progress on key issues, particularly in relation to ending violence and war (and the threat of nuclear war), stopping the exploitation of many peoples and halting the endless assaults on Earth’s biosphere. Of course, in order for those of us who identify as activists to have any prospect of success in these and other endeavors, we need to understand how the world works and to develop an interrelated set of nonviolent strategies that are being effectively implemented to address each of the key aspects of this crisis.

What Black Lives Matter Activists Can Teach Us About The Pitfalls And Potential Of Digital Organizing

According to a recent Economist article, police monitoring of social media as a way of surveilling activists is now commonplace. Given the publicly accessible nature of social media, that should come as no surprise. However, it raises clear questions about the effectiveness of using digital platforms as primary organizing spaces, even while social media has provided important platforms for activists to broaden their reach and impact. As researchers exploring the potential of social movements to scale the impact of their work...

As Hundreds Of Thousands Of Students Prepare For Global #ClimateStrike On March 15, Here’s How To Get Involved

"We are striking because our world leaders have yet to acknowledge, prioritize, or properly address our climate crisis." In 92 countries and counting, hundreds of thousands of students are planning to skip school on March 15 as part of the "School Strike 4 Climate"—a growing movement of young people demanding that policymakers worldwide take urgent and radical steps to battle the climate crisis. "I think we are only seeing the beginning. I think that change is on the horizon and the people will stand up for their future."

Rethink Activism In The Face Of Catastrophic Biological Collapse

This is a hard piece to write, partly because we, too, are baffled. Environmental collapse, coupled with living in the sixth mass extinction, are new territory. We are still in the process of confronting the reality of living with the prospect of an unlivable planet. These thoughts emerge out of our sober forays into an uncertain future, searching for the right ways to live and serve in the present. The second reason for our reluctance to share this contemplation is anticipation of the grief, anger and fear it may trigger. We visit these chambers of the heart frequently, and know the challenges of deep feeling, particularly in a culture that denies feelings and pathologizes death...

Youth Climate Activists Demanding Green New Deal Arrested For Sit-In At #OilMoneyMitch McConnell’s Office

"We're here to warn him and all senators: if you refuse to back the Green New Deal, young people will remember next time you ask for our votes." Hundreds of Kentucky high school students and climate campaigners with the youth-led Sunrise Movement descended on the Capitol Hill office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday to deliver 100,000 petition signatures and stage a sit-in to make clear to lawmakers that young people want a Green New Deal for their communities and futures.

Federal Government Drops Charges Against Four No More Deaths Volunteers, One Still Faces Trial

TUCSON: On Thursday federal prosecutors dropped criminal charges against four humanitarian aid volunteers.  The charges came down as a result of the volunteers’ search for migrants missing in the desert. They have now been issued civil infractions carrying a fine of $250 each.  One remaining volunteer, Scott Warren, continues to await trial both on misdemeanor charges and felony charges for his humanitarian aid work in the Ajo corridor. In July 2017, No More Deaths’ Search and Rescue hotline received a call about three migrants in distress on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge.

Does “Special Ed” Serve Students? Disability Activists Say No.

As a child born with cerebral palsy in the 1950s, Gail Cartenuto-Cohn had one option when she was old enough to go to school: enroll in an isolated public program specifically for kids with disabilities. There was no interaction with nondisabled kids, and there were just three classrooms: one for kindergarten through second grade, another for grades three through five, and a third for sixth through eighth. Occupational therapy, as well as physical therapy and speech therapy, were provided on-site, and although Cartenuto-Cohn describes the education she received as better than adequate, when it was time for her to enroll in high school, she says she was clueless about what to expect.

Movement For Black Lives: Attack On Black Leadership

Over the past few months, several Black progressive leaders have been attacked for supporting Palestinian human rights; most notably, Angela Y. Davis, Marc Lamont Hill and the Hon. Ilhan Omar. In each case, the charge of anti-Semitism was leveled to silence criticism of the Israeli government, to regulate behavior and to try and mute independent Black political voices that are connected to communities across the country and abroad. We categorically reject the erroneous assumption that all criticism of the Israeli government is anti-Semitic.
