Historically, wars unite Israelis. Not anymore. Not that Israelis do not agree with Benjamin Netanyahu’s war; they simply do not believe that the prime minister is the man who could win this supposedly existential fight. But Netanyahu’s war remains unwinnable simply because liberation wars, often conducted through guerrilla warfare tactics, are far more complicated than traditional combat. Nearly six months after the Israeli attack on Gaza, it has become clear that Palestinian resistance groups are durable and well-prepared for a much longer fight.

On March 14, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, long one of Israel’s most zealous supporters on Capitol Hill, made international headlines when he called for Benjamin Netanyahu’s ouster in new elections. In a speech in the Senate, Schumer said, “Israel is a democracy. Five months into this conflict it is clear that Israelis need to take stock of the situation and ask, must we change course. At this critical juncture I believe a new election is the only way to allow for a healthy and open decision-making process about the future of Israel at a time when so many Israelis have lost their confidence in the vision and direction of their government.”

Most Palestinians are unable to reach the al- Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem for the first Friday prayers of the Holy Month of Ramadan. “The portion of the community that is allowed is very small — people who are above the age of 55,” Mustafa Barghouti, secretary general of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Al Jazeera from Ramallah, adding that even they had to go through a hard process to enter the holy site. Given that only men ages 55 and older and women aged 50 and older could be given permission to enter East Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the percentage of Palestinians who have a hope of accessing the holy site is extremely small.

Palestinians in Gaza continue to face highly dire conditions as extreme food shortages imposed by Israel’s blockade continue amid constant military attacks. Children are being affected the worst by Israel’s ongoing aggression. Four months into Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, the U.N. Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Chief Philippe Lazzarini says more children have been killed than in four years of global war. Between October 2023 and February 2024, more than 12,300 children were killed, as reflected in data shared by Lazzarini on X, compared to 12,193 children killed in global conflict from 2019 to 2023.

Months after Israel’s initial declaration that they would never attack a hospital, the Israeli military has assaulted several medical facilities in Gaza, rendering them inoperable and leaving the people of Gaza to die slow and painful deaths. On Sunday morning, Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis went out of service following a brutal military raid that lasted several days over the course of last week. In addition to several Palestinians who were killed by Israeli snipers near the entrance to the hospital, eight people in the hospital later died due to the siege of the facility, which prevented electricity and medical supplies from entering the hospital, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Israel launched missile attacks on Homs and surrounding areas in Syria in the early morning of Wednesday, February 7 killing scores of civilians and destroying significant civilian infrastructure hours before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to the country. “At approximately 00:30 at dawn on Wednesday, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial attack with missiles from the direction of northern Tripoli” Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported. Citing unnamed sources, SANA also said that some of the Israeli missiles were intercepted by the Syrian air defense. According to Al-Mayadeen, at least four civilians were killed and seven others were wounded in the attacks.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health announced on Sunday morning that 21,822 Palestinian martyrs were killed and 56,451 injured in the 86 days of Israel’s aggression in the Gaza Strip. Hundreds remain missing under the rubble and are believed to be dead. In the past 24 hours, Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling killed at least 50 martyrs in 12 massacres; according to the Ministry of Health, 64 of them were killed in Israeli attacks in central Gaza. Yousef Salama, the former Palestinian Authority’s (PA) Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, was killed in an Israeli raid on his home in Al-Maghzai refugee camp on Sunday morning.

The responses to Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza from some of the West Asian countries have set an interesting pattern. These responses defy a decades long trend of muted opposition and behind the curtain compromises. More importantly, this is yet another indication of growing assertion and independence of these countries from US hegemony. Since the 1980s, the US was able to use its military and economic power to create a complete hegemony over the ruling classes in the West Asian region. The countries which maintained their independence were exceptions, such as Syria and Iran.

Colombia Joins Algeria In Complaint Against Netanyahu For War Crimes

Colombia has announced its decision to join Algeria in filing a complaint before the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the prime minister of the Israeli settler entity, Benjamin Netanyahu, for war crimes. This case is being made in view of the genocidal massacre of Palestinian children and civilians conducted by the entity, which has already murdered over 10,000 human beings. The announcement was reported this Thursday, November 9, by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, through posts via social media and in an official statement online. “The Republic of Colombia will contribute to the complaint by the Republic of Algeria filed before the International Criminal Court for war crimes against Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, in light of the massacre of Palestinian children and civilians that he has conducted,” wrote President Petro.

Thousands of Palestinians in Israel took to the streets on Tuesday, February 28, to denounce the attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian homes and properties in Nablus on Sunday. At least one person was killed in the attacks and around 400 others were wounded. Palestinian gathered in the north Israeli town of Sakhnin following a call by the Arab Higher Follow Up Committee, an umbrella organization of Arab groups in Israel. They called the attack on Palestinians a “pogrom” and accused Israeli occupation forces of being participants in the attack. A similar protest held in solidarity with the Palestinian victims in Tel Aviv was suppressed by the Israeli security forces, who detained protestors and resorted to the use of force to disperse them.

Protesters gathered in Habima Square in central Tel Aviv to demonstrate against the government's plan to reduce the powers of the judiciary and policies of far-right and ultra-religious government partners. Demonstrators also reacted to officials, including Netanyahu, one of the government's partners known for his far-right and racist policies, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Between 8,000 and 10,000 people participated in the demonstration, which also included Israeli lawmakers, according to media reports. In the square, demonstrators holding banners that read, "Crime Minister," with a picture of Netanyahu, chanted: "Israel wants equality", "Netanyahu is dangerous, corrupt and racist" and "Ben-Gvir and Smotritch are a disaster."

I am reminded of this line as I watch the preparations and the analysis surrounding the upcoming visit of U.S. president Joe Biden to Israel and Saudi Arabia. The fanfare goes on and at the same time the killing of Palestinians continues uninterrupted. The Israeli newspapers dedicate a great deal to reporting on the length of the red carpet (75 meters, or about 245 feet), and to the enormous efforts by the Israeli police and other security agencies to ensure that the visit goes ahead without any glitches. Similarly, there is analysis of what may be expected from this trip. The latest star to rise in the Israeli political arena is retired general Gadi Eizenkot, former chief of staff of the Israeli army, the IDF. As with every retired army chief, speculations as to his political career and the promise that he will bring have been going on since before he actually retired in 2019 and began his “cooling off” period.

Benjamin Netanyahu may be deeply immersed in a trial on multiple corruption charges. He may have dragged Israelis to four elections in two years. And he may have held his political rivals – and the country – to ransom by refusing to pass a budget. But despite all that, this election result shows beyond doubt that no party leader is even close to Netanyahu in winning the confidence of Israelis. With most votes counted, his Likud party has 30 seats – nearly twice the number of its nearest rival, Yesh Atid, with 17 mandates. The rest of the pack – a further 11 parties – are jostling far behind, most of them at between six and eight seats each. This election marks a historic victory for what in Israel is termed “the right” but that comprises religious fundamentalist and far-right parties.
