Stop The White House Assaults On Colombia’s Peace Accord

In what may constitute a mortal blow to Colombia’s peace process, President Ivan Duque has defied the order by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) to releaseJesús Santrich, aka Seuxis Hernández Solarte, from prison. Santrich is a negotiator and former insurgent who helped craft the accord to end more than five decades of civil war. The failure to recognize the court’s authority undermines a key provision of the accord implemented in 2016: the establishment of a Special Jurisdiction for Peace court to oversee truth and reconciliation processes, the handling of criminal procedures, release of political prisoners and prisoners of war, as well as extradition requests regarding ex-combatants.

Indigenous Leaders Decry Colombia’s Deadly Crackdown On Land Protesters

One person has reportedly died and another was injured after police in Colombia cracked down on a protest by indigenous groups demanding a meeting with the country’s president over land rights. The incident occurred April 2 in the municipality of Cajibío, in Cauca department, an hour before the protesters were due to meet with Interior Minister Nancy Patricia Gutiérrez, El Espectador reported. The newspaper said two indigenous people were wounded; one of them, identified as Deiner Seferino Yunda Camayo, died of his injuries.

Urgent-Colombia Minga Betrayed, Uribe Defends Possible Massacre Of Protesters

The Alliance for Global Justice is saddened and enraged that Colombia’s President Iván Duque, just 200 yards away, decided to abandon his visit with indigenous and popular movement leaders in Cauca. After weeks of protests for land rights and against political violence, the government had reached preliminary accords to address the concerns. President Duque was supposed to finalize the accords on Tuesday, April 9 2016.

Colombian Military Attacks Popular Movements TWICE In Cauca

There is a crisis happening right now in Cauca, Colombia. The Colombian Armed Forces have attacked a “minga” in the village of Cairo, municipality of Cajibío – twice in two days – and are still present and threatening more assaults. The minga is a collective consultation called by indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and farming communities and organizations, including FENSUAGRO, the agricultural workers union and with whom the Alliance for Global Justice works. Participants are demanding to meet with Colombia’s President Ivan Duque, who has so far not responded.

Hiding Colombia’s Human Rights Nightmares In A Venezuelan Coup

It can – and should be said that our imperialist coups are never about democracy, but more so about protecting our investments, killing the threat of a good example, and of spinning a media tale to veil the extreme failures of our own government – our own lack of democracy. In this week's special episode, we sit down with two women from Colombia to hear about the violence and oppression that they face, and the connection to US foreign policy and corporate malfeasance. Meanwhile, the Colombian president sets his sights on Venezuela, leaving his own people and indeed the Venezuelan people in dire straits.

Harassment And Intimidation Of Colombian Peace Activists “Lazos de Dignidad”

The Alliance for Global Justice is concerned about harassment and intimidation that is being experienced by Colombia’s legal collective Fundación Lazos de Dignidad (FLD – Links of Dignity Foundation). Over the past months, collective members have faced a home break-in and illegal search, observation and filming of their 17th floor office by drone, and slanderous media publications and social media posts that place FLD volunteers at risk. Currently the Executive Secretary is facing spurious charges for her work in the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) courts set up as part of the peace agreement.

Stage Set Long Ago For Encounter At Colombia-Venezuela Border

On February 23, the U.S. and Colombian governments joined in trying to push humanitarian supplies from the Colombian border city Cúcuta into Venezuela. They were using humanitarian aid as a Trojan Horse to confront Venezuelan security forces. These were supposed to have stepped aside, Venezuela’s military forces would, in theory, have disintegrated, and a take-down of its socialist government would follow. But the soldiers, police, and people’s militia remained loyal to the emancipating legacy of President Hugo Chávez. They blocked the trucks and the façade shattered.

Pence Threatens War In Venezuela At Colombia Summit: “There Is No Turning Back”

US Vice President Mike Pence delivered a bellicose speech before representatives of 14 Latin American countries at a meeting of the Lima Group in Bogotá, Colombia, yesterday. The remarks were timed to coincide with the US-orchestrated provocations at the Venezuelan border over the weekend, resulting in clashes that left several people dead. Pence rehashed phrases plagiarized from speeches given by George W. Bush in the run-up to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, combining them with denunciations of socialism. “There is no turning back,” Pence said. “All options are on the table.”

Hypocrisy As Human Rights Crisis Grows In Colombia But US-Colombia Threaten Venezuela

BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA (Analysis) — Several troubling situations are currently playing out across Colombia, yet the country’s continuing downward spiral into drug-fueled and politically-motivated violence has caused little concern in Washington, offering yet another clear indication that the U.S.’ current posturing on Venezuela is hardly motivated by concerns about “democracy,” “human rights,” or the welfare of the Venezuelan people. This, of course, can hardly be considered surprising, given that Colombia is a top U.S. ally whose government has long been closely aligned with Washington’s interests.

Pompeo Pushes Brazil And Colombia For Regime Change In Venezuela

The Trump administration has been increasingly hostile towards the Caribbean nation, escalating sanctions and even threatening a military “option.” Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is due to start his second term on January 10, having won re-election on May 20, but Washington and several right-wing regional governments have refused to recognize the election and may look to further isolate Caracas in coming days. For its part, Venezuela has repeatedly denounced what it terms US-led destabilization efforts. Tensions have likewise heightened with some of Venezuela’s Latin American neighbors, especially Brazil and Colombia...

109 Social Leaders Assassinated In Colombia In First 9 Months Of 2018

On December 6, human rights organizations denounced before the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) the high incidence of violence against social leaders, which in the first 9 months of 2018, claimed the lives of 109 people. On top of this the organizations highlighted that in the first week of December three indigenous leaders of the Awá people, belonging to the organization Camawari, were assassinated. Similarly, Diana Sanchez,  the director of Somos Defensores, warned that “since August 23 when the Plan of Action was signed in cases of those killed, by  the Duque government, there have been 67 murders of human rights defenders,” along with a total of 309 threats to social leaders in this year’s run.

Colombian Soldiers Implicated In Social Leader’s Murder

Alvaro Gomez Garzon became the 183rd social leader killed in Colombia in 2018. Communal leader and human rights defender Alvaro Gomez Garzon was reportedly murdered by members of the Colombian Army Monday night in the Cauca department. Cristian Delgado, a member of the left-wing political movement Patriotic March, denounced the fact via Twitter. Gomez was a member of the Patriotic March, the National Association of Campesino Reserve Zones (ANZORC-ZRC), and the National Federation of Agricultural Unions (Fensuagro).

Colombia Suggests Alliance With Brazil’s Bolsonaro To Overthrow Venezuela’s Maduro

A top Colombian official told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that its government will support Brazilian’s far-right President-elect Jair Bolsonaro if he wants to overthrow the socialist government of Venezuela. According to Folha, a top diplomatic official said that “if [President-elect] Bolsonaro wants to help overthrow Maduro with a military intervention, he will have the support of Colombia.” According to the anonymous source, Colombian President Ivan Duque and his political patron, the hard-right former President Alvaro Uribe, would agree with a military intervention. “If it is [United States President Donald] Trump or Bolsonaro are the first to set foot in Venezuela, Colombia will follow suit without hesitation,” the diplomat told Folha.

Colombia: Indigenous Communities Reject Land Reform

Organizations claim the reform would legalize lands illegally seized from Indigenous, Campesino and Afro-Colombian communities. The National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC) demanded the Tribunal of Bogota to halt a proposed reform bill on the Law of Land and to “protect the fundamental right to territory and previous consultation for indigenous people.”

Solidarity With Striking Prisoners Of Colombia And North America

We, the People’s Human Rights Observatory (Observatorio de los Derechos Humanos), declare our solidarity with the worldwide resistance to prison imperialism and reject the expansion of the United States model of mass incarceration. Likewise, we express our support for the demands of the prisoners of La Tramacúa Penitentiary in Valledupar, Colombia, and of the prisoners of various North American penitentiaries, and their desires for dignified lives. The prisoners of La Tramacúa waged a hunger strike for more than a month, beginning on July 11, 2018.
