How The US Became The Center Of Global Kleptocracy

Critics of President Donald Trump frequently use the word “kleptocracy” to describe his leadership, administration, and imprint on American policy writ large. Before 2016 — before Trump’s election and presidency flipped assumptions about America’s liberal democratic project on its head — the word, which literally means “rule of thieves,” was mostly only used by academics and foreign policy wonks.

Why Are Democratic Candidates Taking Money From Union-Busting Lawyers?

The Iron Workers Union endorsed Joe Biden last week, citing his dedication to “defend rights and jobs of American workers”, and calling him “a friend to union ironworkers”. The union endorsement marks one of many that Democratic candidates are fighting for by unveiling detailed labor plans and promising to overturn “right-to work laws” that weaken unions.

From Obama To Trump, The Escalation Of Drone Warfare

We’re only a few days into the new decade and it’s somehow already a bigger dumpster fire than the last. On January 2nd, President Trump decided to order what one expert called “the most important decapitation strike America has ever launched." This one took out not some nameless terrorist in a distant land or a group of civilians who happened to get in the way...

Evo Morales Named Candidate For Bolivian Senate

The former Bolivian leader is running as a candidate, despite the de facto government's attempts to prevent him from registering. The democratically elected President of Bolivia Evo Morales, who is seeking asylum in Argentina after a coup d'etat against him, has been named a candidate for senate.

Freedom Rider: Prejudential: Black America And The Presidents

Ten of the first twelve presidents of the United States were slave holders. This is just one of many historical facts that this columnist discovered while researching and writing Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents . The newly published book is an exploration of black American history viewed through the prism of the presidency. Presidents appear on our currency, we live in cities named after them and attended schools called Washington...

MSNBC Flips Out After Bernie Adviser Nina Turner Calls Bloomberg An ‘Oligarch’

Moments before the Iowa Democratic caucuses kicked off Monday night, Bernie Sanders’ national campaign co-chair Nina Turner sparked fireworks on the MSNBC set when she repeatedly described billionaire Democratic presidential hopeful Mike Bloomberg as an “oligarch.” Criticizing the Democratic National Committee for overhauling its debate requirements in a clear move to allow Bloomberg to qualify moving forward...

Finland Is Now Being Run By Five Parties — All Led By Women, All But One Of Them Under 35

HELSINKI— Thirty-four-year-old Social Democrat Sanna Marin took office in Finland on Tuesday as the world’s youngest serving prime minister, heading a coalition with four other parties led by women, all but one of them under 35. Marin won the confidence of parliament with 99 votes in favor and 70 against. She replaced Antti Rinne, who resigned last week after the Centre Party, one of the members of governing center-left coalition, said it had lost confidence in him over his handling of a postal strike.

What The Right Wing In Latin America Means By Democracy Is Violence

It was a curious exchange. Frustrated by the attacks on his party—the Movement for Socialism (MAS)—former president of Bolivia Evo Morales made an audio recording in which he called upon his supporters to form militias. Maximilian Heath of Reuters went to Argentina to speak with Morales about this leaked recording; Morales said, “In Bolivia, if the armed forces are shooting the people, killing the people, the people have the right to organize their security.”

Now Three Years Into The Reign Of Trump, What’s Left? Class Trumps Partisan Differences

22 Jan 2020 – On January 20, Donald G. Trump completed his third year in office. My one blog that received five-digit Facebook shares predicted Trump would lose in 2016. I was spectacularly wrong but not alone. Even the Las Vegas bookies thought Clinton was a shoo-in with her unbeatable two-punch knockout of (1) I’m not Trump and (2) World War III with the Russians would be peachy at least until the bombs start falling. What could possibly have gone wrong?

Bolivia: Elections Under A Dictatorship

The United States imperialist offensive against the people in Latin America and the Caribbean is beginning a new phase—showing clear fascist tendencies in some countries. Though this is not the only symptom, a clear example of it is the U.S. obsessive effort to starve to death and cause death due to insalubrity to the Venezuelan and Cuban people just for the sake of hindering their sacred human right to self-determination.

Bolivia: As Elections Near, US-Backed Interim Gov’t Mobilizes Military, Arrests Opposition Leaders

Wednesday, January 22 marks the day that Jeanine Añez is set to stand down as “interim” President of Bolivia, beginning the process for fresh elections set for May 3. Añez came to power in November, following a U.S.-backed coup that deposed the Movement to Socialism’s (MAS) Evo Morales. However, she is certainly not acting as if she intends to relinquish her power, let alone move towards new elections. Instead, she has sent the military...

Senate Panel Briefed On Disparity In Incarceration

Maryland has the highest incarceration rate in the nation of black men aged 18 to 24, according to a November report issued by the Justice Policy Institute. The second highest incarceration rate for young black men is in Mississippi. “No disrespect to Mississippi,” said Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee Chairman William C. Smith Jr. (D-Montgomery), “but this should be something that raises everyone’s eyebrows throughout the entire General Assembly, and especially in this committee.”

55% Of US Voting-Age Women Prefer Socialism, Over Capitalism

A majority of voting-age women in the United States oppose capitalism and would rather live under an economic system resembling the democratic socialist structure in force in Nordic countries such as Sweden and Norway, according to a reminder published Sunday by the news website Axios. The Harris poll conducted for “Axios HBO” in June 2019 had shown that socialism gained popularity over the past years.

Bolivia: MAS Presents Official Presidential Ticket

"A running ticket to encompass Indigenous, social, and middle-class movements," commented teleSUR's correspondent Marco Teruggi. Bolivia's Movement Towards Socialism, headed by exiled President Evo Morales, announced Sunday that former Minister of Economy Luis Arce and former Minister of Foreign Affairs David Choquehuanca will run for president and vice president, respectively, for the country's May 3 general elections.

Palestinian Freedom 2020: Student Activists Confront Democratic Candidates Over Aid To Israel

Hasan is a first-generation Palestinian activist who attends Tuft University and got involved in the movement after seeing the impact Israeli policy has had on his family. (“I do this because Israel has to change for the sake of my people – and for humanity,” he explains.) He told Mondoweiss that he was encouraged by the responses from Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders, but indicated that there was a lot more work to be done.
