In November, Schneiderman issued a subpoena demanding a wide range of documents, including emails and financial documents.

The oil giant went on the offensive in a Nov. 20 letter, a copy of which was obtained by POLITICO. It comes as investigations by the Columbia journalists in the Los Angeles Times and a separate report by the nonprofit website InsideClimate News continue to stoke Democratic calls for a federal probe into whether the company concealed its internal understanding of the global warming threat posed by burning fossil fuels.

According to people with knowledge of the investigation, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued a subpoena Wednesday evening to Exxon Mobil, demanding extensive financial records, emails and other documents. The investigation focuses on whether statements the company made to investors about climate risks as recently as this year were consistent with the company’s own long-running scientific research.

McKibben, an environmental writer and activist, was trying to draw attention to the fact that ExxonMobil's scientists knew for years that burning fossil fuels was causing the planet to warm, but chose to deny it. Recent stories in InsideClimate and the Los Angeles Times have called attention to what the company knew about climate change and when they knew it. McKibben staged his protest outside the Simon's Quick Stop and Deli Mobil station in Burlington, the Burlington Free Press reports.

Exciting as the energy geopolitics stand-off is to follow from afar, the climate disruption implications of it serve as the ultimate trump card. "Sadly, few seem to care about diminishing the threat posed by climate change, since it has become increasingly clear that LNG would make things worse," wrote ClimateProgress Editor Joe Romm in a March 12 article. "First, natural gas is mostly methane, (CH4), a super-potent greenhouse gas, which traps 86 times as much heat as CO2 over a 20-year period. So even small leaks in the natural gas production and delivery system can have a large climate impact."
