Trump Administration Auctions Off 150,000 Acres Of Public Land For Fossil-Fuel Extraction

The Trump administration is continuing to their ramp-up of offering up public lands to the oil and gas industry for fossil fuel extraction. The newest offering is 150,000 acres of public lands near several national parks in Utah. The land that will be auctioned off is near Canyonlands and Arches national parks, Bears Ears, Canyons of the Ancients and Hovenweep national monuments, and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Some of the included lands are within 10 miles of internationally known protected areas. The land will be used for natural gas extraction, aka fracking. Citizens of Utah and environmental groups gathered in the Utah State Capitol on Tuesday to protest the decision.

Divest From Banks That Fuel Climate Change, Establish Public Bank

New York, NY – As global leaders assemble for the 4th Annual Climate Finance Day, New Yorkers, including representatives from environmental, community and student groups, held a rally at City Hall on November 28, 2018 and call on NYC to divest public money from banks that fuel climate change and to establish a municipal public bank to help fund the transition to a just, sustainable economy. At the rally, Public Bank NYC, a broad-based coalition of community, worker rights, environmental, and economic justice groups, will release new findings showing nine of the largest banks eligible to hold City deposits (“NYC designated banks”) are major investors in the fossil fuel industry, including the proposed Williams Pipeline, which would carry fracked gas across the New York Harbor.

Report: 90% Of Pipeline Blasts Draw No Financial Penalties

A striking report has revealed that 90 percent of the 137 interstate pipeline fires or explosions since 2010 have drawn no financial penalties for the companies responsible. The article from E&E News reporter Mike Soraghan underscores the federal Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's (PHMSA) weak authority over the fossil fuel industry for these disasters. The government levied a mere $5.4 million in fines for the 13 pipeline explosion and fire cases in the last eight years, the analysis found. "That's less than one day of profits for one major pipeline company, TransCanada. It's $2 million less than what [TransCanada CEO Russ Girling] made last year," Soraghan explained in a tweet.

Columbus, OH–This morning activists disrupted JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon’s speech at an Axios.com event, calling attention to the bank’s funding of fossil fuels, carbon pollution, and Indigenous rights violations. The activists handed Dimon a copy of the latest UN scientist report on climate change. This action is part of a broader, growing pattern. Dimon has been hounded with the same message at many events across the country, including the bank’s AGM, various speaking engagements, and outside its headquarters. Activists are determined to continue bird dogging him until he takes responsibility for his role as one of the most powerful funders of climate change.

Some 10,000 people from all over the world descended upon the British capital demanding more action on climate change, declaring a rebellion against UK Government and calling for global peaceful civil disobedience to address this global issue. Organised by the Extinction Rebellion group, five bridges – Blackfriars, Waterloo, Westminster, Lambeth and Southwark – were blocked early Saturday morning and held for much of the day before moving to Parliament Square. The purpose of the action was to place pressure upon the UK government to be honest and forthright about the reality of the climate and ecological emergency.

Let me tell you about why I woke up crying today. It has to do with just how close we are to full-blown climate disaster. I was thinking about children who are already experiencing the horrible consequences of global warming, and I was thinking about particular children I love and what’s in store for them. Most of all, I was thinking about the unthinkable: that we are on the verge of ensuring that most, if not all, life on Earth will be snuffed out. Everyone should be tossing and turning in their beds unable to sleep, experiencing the raw emotions that led me to tears this morning. This is not a joke, or a drill. This is it. Decision-point for humankind. The UN says we have to turn things around within 12 years to avoid catastrophe. Others give us even less time.

Most eyes Tuesday night were on the key House, Senate, and governor races — and Democrats had a mixed night, taking the House but watching as newfound heroes Beto O’Rourke and Andrew Gillum went down to defeat. But there were several climate change- and energy-related ballot initiatives up for a vote across the country as well. For the most part, they did not go well for fans of clean energy. The ones that utilities and oil and gas companies mobilized and spent big against lost. After being boxed out of climate and energy policy at the federal level, the left has turned to states, but at least last night, the states did not deliver much good news.

Prayer And Fast For Climate Change

A group of concerned citizens will be publicly fasting and praying for ten days prior to Thanksgiving to focus attention on the issue of climate change. The fast and prayer will run from 7.30am Monday November 12 to 1pm Wednesday November 21st, 2018, the day before Thanksgiving. Fasters will be in front of the Court House on College Street from 7.30am to 8.30am, then at the Vance Monument from 8.30am until 5pm each day. A daily prayer at noon will be led by various local faith leaders, followed each day by a short talk on climate change issues.

Since its launch by students as a moral call to climate action in 2011, the fossil fuel divestment campaign has become a mainstream financial movement mobilizing trillions of dollars in support of the clean energy transition. Commitments to divest continue to grow rapidly: Today, nearly 1,000 institutional investors with $6.24 trillion in assets have committed to divest from fossil fuels, up from $52 billion four years ago—an increase of 11,900 percent. The primary drivers of this recent growth are insurers, pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds. The insurance sector continues to divest more than any other sector, having committed to divest over $3 trillion in assets.

As artists and cultural workers we’ve chosen to undermine the power of the fossil fuel industry in our own backyard directly. We’ve put our focus on confronting artwashing, which is basically greenwashing, using art. When companies like Shell sponsor museums and cultural institutions, it’s not because they care about art, it’s to paint their faces with a veneer of goodwill and distract the public from the disastrous reality of their business practices. To make themselves look like generous contributors to society, when they are in fact the diametric opposite. Art and activism can be applied together to bring fossil-sponsored cultural institutions to their senses. It can flip outcomes for unethical sponsors on their heads – turning decoration into disgrace.

The fossil fuel industry knowingly alters the climate, exacerbating fire risks in the American West, including massive wildfires across California. Energy utilities (presently private corporations) play a more immediate role in sparking fires that, thanks to climate volatility, rage out of control. Then, these private corporations dodge strict liability regulations by getting the California legislature to allow them to charge customers for that liability. The lesson is clear: Oil companies heat and dry up the planet, power companies start fires on the dried up land, and we pay the bills. Once it is signed into law by California Gov. Jerry Brown – who is fresh off the successful Global Climate Action Summit, held last week in San Francisco – that is exactly what new state legislation will do.

If Ireland Can Get Out Of Fossil Fuels, Your Town Can Too

On Thursday, July 12th, a small, rainy island in the North Atlantic proved it was on the right side of history. The Republic of Ireland passed a bill to divest its $370 million worth of investments in around 150 fossil fuel companies within five years. Should the bill pass the Irish Senate in September, which it is expected to do, Ireland will become the first country to fully divest from fossil fuels. This action marks a huge step forward. For years now, neighborhood climate activists have pressured cities, universities, and governments to divest their holdings in fossil fuel companies. The idea is to defund and denounce the industry that contributes the most to climate change, funds climate denial, and prevents climate action. With its divestment bill, Ireland will join a group of almost 900 cities, universities, and governments that have collectively divested over $6 trillion from the extractive fossil fuel economy.

Cleanwashing: How States Count Polluting Energy Sources As Renewable

Our new report finds that poor definitions of "renewable" and weak targets are undermining states' efforts to avoid climate change. Are burning tires clean energy? We don't think so. Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia have mandatory programs to encourage renewable electricity generation. These Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) programs set renewable electricity goals and determine which energy sources qualify as renewable. Such programs can be part of the energy policy portfolio to create powerful incentives to shift to renewable energy. Unfortunately, most RPS programs have not been robust enough to foster a rapid transition to clean, renewable energy About half the states aimed to achieve only up to 25 percent renewable power. Almost all states allowed combustion-based energy sources including wood burning and the burning of waste methane (so-called biogas) to meet RPS goals.
