The next two weeks are critical in the struggle to stop construction of a liquefied fracked-gas export terminal in Cove Point, MD that threatens nearby homes, the Chesapeake Bay and the climate crisis. We need you to join the emergency mobilization! Join the community in saving their homes and preventing a huge threat to the climate crisis. Overnight accommodations in a church will be available for those who need it. The FERC issued a permit this year for the construction of a 160 foot pier to bring in large pieces of equipment for the gas export terminal, but they must finish it by December 16 or they will have to wait until late March to begin construction again. A delay in construction is critical because this project's permit is being challenged for failure to conduct an environmental impact study and a quantitative risk assessment. This is the first gas export terminal being built in a residential area, which sets a dangerous precedent.

For five days in a row this week a federal agency was blockaded by protesters, delaying workers, sending a strong message of demands and resulting in scores of arrests. Did you hear about the blockades in the corporate, mass media? The blockades were just a driveway's distance from CNN, just around the corner from NPR and in a mass media center, Washington, DC. Do you wonder why they did not report that there were blockades outside of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)? The protests were because FERC has been rubber stamping fracked gas infrastructure permits without considering the environmental and health impacts, especially ignoring climate change, and ignoring the views of the communities. Gas companies are very big advertisers in the mass media. . . . Each of the issues raised that day impact all of us and all of the issues we work on: climate change, war and militarism, media corruption, Internet access and global trade. Other days brought in the issues of the corrupt corporate duopoly and a government bought and paid for by big corporations and the wealthy; and the racially unfair impact of environmental toxicity and other issues. There is power in recognizing how our issues are connected. Working together we are stronger. Challenging the system and seeking transformative change is the only way we will create the change that is needed.

Activists Halt Construction of Cove Point LNG Export Terminal

Chesapeake Bay, Maryland mother Kelly Canavan locked herself to a piece of equipment at a construction site in Solomons integral to the project. Canavan is the president of AMP Creeks Council, a small nonprofit organization that focuses on land use and zoning policy. She is also part of Stopping Extraction and Exports Destruction (SEED), an umbrella group of mid-Atlantic activists fighting energy extraction and exports. “The AMP Creeks Council has been opposing this project through several lawsuits for about a year,” Canavan said. “Now that FERC is poised to preempt any further victories we might be awarded in Calvert County, and Maryland officials at every level continue to support Dominion instead of residents, we are forced to take this stand. This is a peaceful protest to call attention to the carelessness and injustice that have characterized the course of this project from the beginning.” “The destruction of this prominent area in the Solomons community is tangible proof of the determination of both Dominion and Maryland politicians to steamroll residents’ rights.” Canavan said.

Fracking has become a major problem in the United States under the mis-leadership of both political parties and the 'all of the above' energy strategy put forward by President Obama. Obama has reduced the use of coal by expanding the use of fracking. There is a major week of actions beginning on November 1 -- Beyond Extreme Energy -- that we urge you to participate in. Cove Point Opponents Find FERC & Elected Official Guilty

In ‘People’s Court’ at FERC headquarters, activists ‘convict’ regulators and leaders—from Pres. Obama to Chairman LaFleur to Gov. O’Malley—for selling out people’s safety and the climate Calvert citizens rally at the home closest to Dominion’s facility, declaring, ‘We have nothing to lose because we have everything to lose’. Vowing to continue the fight to block a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility at Cove Point in southern Maryland, activists held tandem demonstrations on Friday outside the headquarters of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and at a home directly across the street from Dominion Resources’ proposed facility in Lusby. The actions came in response to FERC’s ruling earlier this week to grant Virginia-based Dominion approval to build the $3.8 billion project. Environmental groups are preparing to petition FERC to reconsider this ruling, given the agency failed to conduct a full environmental impact statement or to fully consider the environmental damage that would come from increased fracking or global warming pollution.

Rising Tide Vermont Halts Gas Pipeline Construction

"Vermont Gas lied," said Will Bennington, a spokesperson for Rising Tide Vermont. "They've lied about the climate and environmental impacts of the project, they've lied to landowners and broken promises, and now they've lied about the cost of this project. The Public Service Board, and ultimately GOvernor Shumlin, have no reason to believe Vermont Gas is acting in the public good." In July, Vermont Gas announced a 40 percent increase in the cost of construction for Phase 1 of the fracked gas pipeline. The company hopes to pass this cost on to ratepayers, increasing the price of gas at a time when many Vermonters are already struggling to heat their homes. Demonstrators oppose the pipeline because it will lock Vermont communities into decades more of dirty fossil fuel use, at a time when a rapid transition away from fossil fuels and extreme energy use is needed.

Green Groups Fight To Uphold Colorado Town’s Ban On Fracking

A coalition of environmental organizations this week filed a motion to preserve the groundbreaking ban on fracking enacted by Longmont, Colorado voters in 2012. Our Health Our Future Our Longmont, Food & Water Watch, Sierra Club, and Earthworks, represented by the University of Denver Law Clinic, appealed a July ruling by a Colorado judge that struck down the prohibition. “We are committed to continuing to protect the health, safety and property of Longmont residents,” said Kaye Fissinger, President of Our Health Our Future Our Longmont. Boulder District Judge D.D. Mallard had ruled that Longmont's ban constitutes an "irreconcilable conflict" with the state’s interests in oil and gas interests, and that the state takes precedence over the local ruling. But the coalition that appealed the ruling argues that state law prohibits extractive policies that are harmful to the environment.

Pipeline Meeting Moved Due To Protest Plans

Dominion changed the venue for its information meeting on its natural gas pipeline next week after protest plans were announced at its previously arranged location. Company representatives scheduled it as the first of many open houses to answer questions from landowners and the public on an informal, one-on-one basis. They will have more details about information and maps for the proposed 550-mile utility line Dominion wants to build from West Virginia to North Carolina. The Augusta County Alliance, which formed in opposition to the energy company's proposal, alerted supporters Thursday about protests being organized in Verona. On Friday, County Administrator Pat Coffield notified Dominion that the wording of the alert from the Alliance raised safety concerns about government employees and open house visitors. The open house would have overlapped with Government Center hours. Because of that and the safety concerns, "I do not feel that the Government Center is the appropriate location for the Open House along with the planned activities of the Augusta County Alliance," Coffield wrote in a letter to Dominion. In an interview, Coffield noted phrases in the Alliance email newsletter about not letting, "the landowners go in there alone." "Let's pack the parking lot and pack the room," the notice said.

Oil Train Halted By Mother Suspended Above The Tracks

Five local residents have stopped work at a Burlington Northern Santa-Fe Rail Yard in Everett by erecting a tripod structure on the outbound railroad tracks, directly in front of both a mile-long oil train and a coal train. Seattle resident Abby Brockway - a small business owner and mother - is suspended from the structure 18 feet above the tracks while four other residents are locked to the legs of the tripod. The group is demanding an immediate halt to all shipments of fossil fuels through the Northwest and calling on Governor Inslee to reject permits for all new fossil fuel projects in Washington, including proposed coal and oil terminals.

Chesapeake Earth First! Locks Down At America’s Natural Gas Alliance

In a strong statement of opposition, two activists locked their necks to the front doors of the building that hosts the offices of America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) while a crowd of supporters held signs and cheered around them. This action was taken by Chesapeake Earth First! as part of the Rise Together mobilization, a series of actions and events against extreme energy perpetrators from August 16-24. The activists locked to the doors wore shirts saying “DC says no to LNG exports” and “Maryland says no to LNG exports,” representing the places they live and their opposition to the Cove Point liquid natural gas (LNG) export facility and liquefaction plant proposed to be built by Dominion Energy in Southern Maryland. The front doors were successfully blocked for two and a half hours.

Now Google Street View Is Mapping Gas Pipeline Leaks

Some of those Google cars that drive around photographing streetscapes and embarrassing moments have captured something extra—something that should embarrass major utilities. The cars were kitted out by University of Colorado scientists with sensors that sniff out natural gas leaking from underground pipelines. These methane-heavy leaks contribute to global warming, waste money, and can fuel explosions. The sensor-equipped cars cruised the streets of Boston, New York's Staten Island, and Indianapolis. They returned to sites where methane spikes were detected to confirm the presence of a leak. The results were released Wednesday by the Environmental Defense Fund, which coordinated the project, revealing just how leaky old and metallic pipelines can be, such as those used in the East Coast cities studied, particularly when compared with noncorrosive pipes like those beneath Indianapolis. About one leak was discovered for each mile driven in Boston, Mass.:

Fracking Linked To Earthquakes AGAIN, This Time Colorado

When the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission ordered NGL Water Solutions to stop fracking wastewater injection operations a month ago, a team of University of Colorado Boulder researchers began conducting its own investigation. NGL, formerly known as High Sierra Water Services, was given permission to resume its activities at a 10,800-foot-deep well a few weeks later, but the CU findings suggest that shouldn’t have happened. Anne Sheehan and her team found that the well is linked to more than 200 earthquakes, the geophysics professor in the CU Department of Geological Sciences told Boulder County Business Report. She said the group found “quite a few” earthquakes with epicenters within two miles of the well.

Move Toward Single Employee Train Crew Increases Risks

Single employee train crews are unsafe and dangerous for the crews that operate them, other railroad workers, those living along the tracks, motorists and pedestrians, for the community in general and society at large. Combining both current jobs (conductor and engineer) into one will mean more crew fatigue, less focus, more distraction and a decline in operator situational awareness. The loss of that second pair of eyes and eyes would result in a decline in safety on the railroad and would be a detriment to national security and public safety. Single employee trains crews are unsafe and inefficient in all but the most routine and straight forward railroad work. For many if not most tours-of-duty, they would present complex challenges for the train’s lone operator. Single crew operations will result in a loss of valuable informal education of train crews both new and old, and lead to less capable and knowledgeable crew members in general as a result. Finally, loneliness, isolation and a loss of comradery and spirit would be the inevitable result, bringing with it mental problems, job dissatisfaction, and staff turnover.
