Protesters Call On Seaworld To “Empty The Tanks”

When it comes to impassioned feelings about Sea World, most readers of the OB Rag are well aware that much has recently been written, discussed, filmed, and documented. The world began to take notice with the release of Gabriella Cowperthwaite’s documentary Blackfish. It started with ripples of awareness that have now become waves of deep concern. The worldwide anger the movie unleashed is nearly impossible to ignore. While SeaWorld was celebrating their 50th anniversary last Friday, everyday citizens, myself included, were standing on Sea World Drive protesting 50 years of inhumane captivity, drawing attention to what we, and a growing number of people around the world see as a new vision for SeaWorld: the recently proposed California Captive Orca Welfare and Safety Act – AB 2140.

Protests Against Mass Death Sentences At Egyptian Embassy In DC

An Egyptian court sentenced 529 supporters of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi to death on March 24 for killing a police officer. Today protestors from CODEPINK took their objections to the Egyptian Embassy in Washington, DC: “The trial was clearly a sham and your government, which has jailed over 16,000 people since coming to power, is clearly targeting people based on political affiliation.” The alleged supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi were convicted on charges of killing a single police officer, the attempted murder of two other officers, and attacking a police station in the Nile Valley city of Minya in August. Sixteen people were acquitted. The mass sentencing underscored the severity of an ongoing campaign by Egypt’s military-backed leaders to silence opposition, eight months after a military coup ousted Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected leader.

Fed Up With The Federal Reserve

A group of activists concerned with the continuing economic struggle of Americans held a sidewalk “conference” in front of Federal Reserve Board headquarters in Washington, DC on March 21 and 22. Their conference, called “Fed Up: The Peoples First Conference on Monetary Reform,” coincided with a European Central Bankers’ meeting to discuss international monetary policy. Occupying the sidewalk in front of the Federal Reserve, they spoke to passersby about the need to change U.S. economic policy and redistribute wealth. Fed Up delegates claim the Federal Reserve is a “black box of decision-making,” responsible for policies that enrich banks with free money at the expense of millions who are economically strapped. Their message: “We need to take back the Federal Reserve, stop bailing out Wall Street and start rebuilding America.”

Vermont Communities Organize Against Pipeline Plans

Jane Palmer recalls the controversy when Vermont Gas first announced its intention to construct a gas pipeline down the western side of the state, a route which would require a right-of-way through the center of Monkton. “We thought it was a dumb idea that would undermine alternative energy efforts,” she says. But it wasn’t until a neighbor stopped by in late January 2013 with maps showing the pipeline running through their fields and 150 feet from their house that the Palmers began to really pay attention. Shortly thereafter, an agent from the gas company called the house, seeking permission to survey their land for the pipeline. The Palmers refused, stating they had no intention of allowing a gas pipeline to be built across their land. Nate notes that, “we essentially flipped them the bird from the beginning.” With their gesture, the Palmers joined a growing list of landowners and community members opposed to the largest expansion of Vermont’s fossil fuel infrastructure in decades.

Rally in NYC for Fossil Fuel Divestment

On Thursday, over 130 New Yorkers rallied to deliver 11,000 petitions to Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, calling on him to divest New York State from fossil fuels. At $160 billion, New York's Common Retirement Fund is the third largest pension plan in the country, and it's heavily invested in the fossil fuel industry. Comptroller DiNapoli has the power to divest New York State from fossil fuels. Divestment has the power to rein in the fossil fuel industry and support our transition to a clean energy economy. It's the smart thing to do and the right thing to do -- for both the pension fund and the planet.

Hundreds March After Police Kill Homeless Man

Hundreds of Albuquerque, N.M. residents took to the streets on Tuesday to voice their outrage over the fatal shooting of an unarmed homeless man by police. Protesters and activists also used the hashtag of the homeless man's name #JamesBoyd on Twitter to encourage community members to get involved and to call for a full investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department's recorded confrontation.

(AP) Students set fires and made barricades during the first day of a student strike to protest a government education reform and cutbacks in grants and staffing, at Complutense University, in Madrid, Spain, Wednesday, March 26, 2014. Spanish police say they have arrested more than 50 students when the police moved in to end the occupation of a campus building after the university had asked them to intervene. Students, many with their faces covered, set fire to trash containers and set up barricades on at least two streets in the university complex during the protest.

79 Year Old Irish Protesters Interviewed On Day Of Her Release From Prison

Irish peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy was recently released from prison. She’s 79, she has cancer and arthritis (from a broken neck!), and one would think someone in that condition would be more than happy to take to her rocker and never mind the wicked old world at all anymore. But one would be wrong. She’s more engaged with the world than ever, and if you want to know what it’s like when someone just up and tells death to go to hell, well…listen to her. She takes on everything from the CIA and its torture flights (out of Shannon Airport, which is why she was arrested), to gender discrimination and the crappy situation of the Mountjoy women’s prison. And she even finds time to give the interviewer a hand-knit teddy bear for his child.

Is Taiwan Style Protest Developing In Hong Kong?

We all know how Occupy Central will play out if its organisers go ahead with it - exactly like the scenes of mayhem in Taipei we have just witnessed this week. Organiser and academic Dr Benny Tai Yiu-ting has called it Occupy Central with Love and Peace. He sounds almost like a hippie. His protest colleague and fellow academic, Dr Chan Kin-man, says all peaceful and legal means will be tried before resorting to civil disobedience, which by definition, is illegal. But he warns they may have to push forward the planned "occupation" to this summer, rather than wait till the end of the year, as Tai has hinted. Apparently, the occupation of the parliament by Taiwanese student protesters and their failed bid to take over Taiwan's cabinet building has energised their counterparts in Hong Kong.

Police Evict Students From Taiwan Parliament, Injure Over 150

More than 150 people were injured and 61 students arrested after riot police armed with batons and water cannon waded in to break up a protest over a trade pact with China at Taiwan's parliament in the early hours of Monday. Seven waves of police brandishing riot shields marched towards students forcing them away from the courtyard of the Executive Yuan building, which demonstrators had broken into hours earler, after President Ma Ying-jeou failed to soothe public anger at his administration's handling of the free-trade pact with the mainland. Demonstrators chanting "No more police brutality" and "Police back off" laid down and linked arms and legs in an effort to halt the eviction from the cabinet compound, while others lashed out at police before being beaten back with batons and, as dawn broke, water cannon.

Philadelphia’s Temple University is finding that out, in the case of Dr. Tony Monteiro. Protesters converged on campus, this week, and their anger was directed as much at “Afro-centrist” Prof. Molefi Asante as at Teresa Soufas, the Dean of Liberal Arts who fired Monteiro.

Venezuela: Some Realities On What Is Happening

On February 12th, (Venezuelan Youth Day and the commemoration of the independence battle of La Victoria) some university students and traditional conservative opposition groups took to the streets in Venezuela. In Caracas students and others attacked a government building, burned cars and damaged the entrance to a metro station. The demonstrations extended for several days, as it quickly became obvious that the principal purpose of the protests was to destabilize the government and seek the ouster of the democratically elected president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. Maduro faced a hotly contested presidential election shortly after the death of Hugo Chávez, in which he narrowly defeated Henrique Capriles. To gain support, Capriles promised to continue social programs initiated by the late president becoming what some called a “Chávez lite” candidate. The hard line elements of the opposition, including Capriles refused to accept the results of the elections and street violence generated by conservative forces left close to a dozen people dead.
