Venezuela Urges UN To Intervene Against US Sanctions

Caracas, July 6 (IANS) The Venezuelan government has urged the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to intervene against the US trade and financial sanctions which are undermining the South American nation's economy. Addressing a session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Venezuelan Vice Foreign Minister William Castillo said on Friday that the sanctions met the body's definition of "unilateral coercive measures" and should be lifted, reports Xinhua news agency. "In keeping with the UN's resolutions on unilateral coercive measures, (we) demand the immediate end to the blockade," urged Castillo.

Unilateral Sanctions And International Law

The world order established by the UN Charter takes precedence over other international and regional treaties and imposes positive and negative obligations on member states, including the United States of America and the European Union. This is stipulated in Article 103 of the Charter, the supremacy clause. The question arises whether in the light of the UN Charter unilateral coercive measures could be considered compatible with modern international law?

US Sanctions On Venezuela Illegal Under UN, OAS And US Law

The application of unilateral economic sanctions is an explicit violation of international law protected under the United Nation’s (U.N.) and Organization of American States’s (OAS) charters, human rights stipulations, and even national United States (U.S.) law. Despite that truth, they have become U.S. President Donald Trump’s favorite tool to assert his foreign policy goals around the world. Since 2017, the Trump administration has imposed 150 sanctions on individuals and entities in Venezuela via executive orders and by invoking the so-called Kingpin Act.

An Honorable Course In Iran: End Sanctions, Resume Dialogue

Last week, Elham Pourtaher, an Iranian graduate student at the State University of New York in Albany, wrote about how U.S. policies cause suffering and trauma far beyond U.S. borders. Her diabetic father, for example, is in danger of losing access to medicines because sanctions against Iranian banks make it nearly impossible to pay for imported goods, including medicine and food. Shortages could lead to thousands of deaths. Pourtaher described “the collective sense of fear caused by the increased sanctions.”

So Who Is Reporting That Trump Sanctions Have Killed Thousands Of Venezuelans?

I wrote on June 14 about Reuters burying (for over a month) a study (CEPR, 4/25/19)  by prominent economists Jeffrey Sachs and Mark Weisbrot that links economic sanctions President Donald Trump imposed on Venezuela in August 2017 to an estimated 40,000 deaths by the end of 2018. As of January 2019, Trump made the sanctions even more severe. The study is the clearest evidence of the devastating impact US policy is having on the people of Venezuela. Below is a list of English-language outlets that, according to the Nexis news database, mentioned the study as of June 17.

The Mechanism Of Economic Sanctions: Changing Perceptions And Euphemisms

In our discussion we designate economic sanctions as “coordinated restrictions on trade and/or financial transactions intended to impair economic life within a given territory”[5]. To the extent that measures intend to impair “economic life within a given territory” through restrictions on trade and/or finance, they constitute, for our purposes, economic sanctions. Selective or individualized measures, such as restrictions on specific goods (arms, luxury items, some forms of travel), are therefore not considered as economic sanctions.

How To Move Away From The Brink Of War With Iran

The United States has been waging an economic war against Iran ever since the Iranian Revolution overthrew the US-backed brutal shah in 1979, but that war has escalated recently with the US-imposed oil embargo. Oil is a major source of revenue for Iran. Add to that the US pulling out of the nuclear agreement, the attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran shooting down a US drone, and we are extremely close to a hot war that would destabilize the entire Middle East. We speak with Patrick Hiller, a conflict resolution expert who traveled to Iran with us earlier this year, about just how dangerous the current situation is, what the potential consequences are and what we can do to reconcile the hostilities. We also cover recent news and analyses.

Iran Goes For “Maximum Counter-Pressure”

Sooner or later the US “maximum pressure” on Iran would inevitably be met by “maximum counter-pressure”. Sparks are ominously bound to fly. For the past few days, intelligence circles across Eurasia had been prodding Tehran to consider a quite straightforward scenario. There would be no need to shut down the Strait of Hormuz if Quds Force commander, General Qasem Soleimani, the ultimate Pentagon bête noire, explained in detail, on global media, that Washington simply does not have the military capacity to keep the Strait open.

Starvation Sanctions Are Worse Than Overt Warfare

“We are putting major additional Sanctions on Iran on Monday,” President Trump tweeted today. “I look forward to the day that Sanctions come off Iran, and they become a productive and prosperous nation again – The sooner the better!” Iran’s economy is already floundering due to the steadily mounting sanctions that the Trump administration has been heaping upon it since its withdrawal from the JCPOA last year. Crucial goods are four times the price they used to be, sick Iranians are having difficulty obtaining life-saving medicine, and life in general has been getting much more difficult for the poorest and frailest Iranian civilians. For this reason, it is a very safe bet that there have been Iranians who have died because of the sanctions. Being unable to obtain enough life-saving medicine will inevitably increase mortality rates, as will inadequate nutrition and care for those whose health is at risk.

March On The Pentagon Says “Hell, No” To More Imperialist War

Remember the Gulf of Tonkin false flag incident in 1964 that led to The Gulf of Tonkin resolution on August 7, 1964? Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, authorizing President Johnson to take any measures he believed were necessary to retaliate and to promote the maintenance of international peace and security in southeast Asia. Millions of dead Vietnamese later and a generation of US military veterans that have killed themselves since then at a race that is over twice the number (around 58k) that were killed in country, the people of the US and the war machine are still at it! For its entire existence, but especially with the advent of the spreading cancer of US imperialist around the turn of the last century, the US military industrial complex has metastasized out of control and it seems incapable of leaving any country in peace, or unstained by its filthy military bases.

White House Pushes ‘Trump Pulled Back’ Story

Last night U.S President Trump allegedly pulled back from a military strike against Iran after it had already been ordered. That is the official story but there are doubts that it is true. The Iranian campaign of "maximum pressure" against Trump's sanctions is still on. But there are first signs that it is successful. The New York Times headlines: Trump Approves Strikes on Iran, but Then Abruptly Pulls Back WASHINGTON — President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions. As late as 7 p.m., military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations.

Actions: No War, No Coup, End The Sanctions, Troops Home Now

As you know, two oil tankers in the Sea of Oman were disabled by explosions on Thursday, June 13.  The US government announced that it was Iran that did it.  Iran knows that such a move would immediately make them suspect and therefore would not do it.  The US statements have been contradicted by the crew of one of the ships and the ships owner and most countries, even allies of the US, have said there is no proof.  This is very much like the Gulf of Tonkin incident that led the US to war with Vietnam leading to 4,000,000 Vietnamese dead and 60,000 US military dead.  Today we know that the Gulf of Tonkin incident never occurred, we were lied to and millions died because of that lie.  Do not let it happen again.  Read the press statement from Iran on the incident here and join us on or around the weekend of July 13 & 14.

US Sanctions Violate Human Rights And International Code Of Conduct

GENEVA (6 May 2019) – An independent expert appointed by the Human Rights Council has expressed deep concern at the recent imposition of unilateral coercive measures on Cuba, Venezuela and Iran by the United States, saying the use of economic sanctions for political purposes violates human rights and the norms of international behaviour.  Such action may precipitate man-made humanitarian catastrophes of unprecedented proportions.

U.S. Sanctions: Economic Sabotage That Is Deadly, Illegal And Ineffective

While the mystery of who is responsible for sabotaging the two tankers in the Gulf of Oman remains unsolved, it is clear that the Trump administration has been sabotaging Iranian oil shipments since May 2, when it announced its intention to “bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue.” The move was aimed at China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, all nations that purchase Iranian oil and now face U.S. threats if they continue to do so.

Study Linking US Sanctions To Venezuelan Deaths Buried By Reuters For Over A Month

It would indeed have been impossible for a Reuters reporter to be aware of the study if they depended only on Reuters articles to keep informed. The news agency hadn’t mentioned the study since it was released, never mind written an article about it. I asked a contact I have at Reuters about this, and he was also surprised that Reuters hadn’t even mentioned the study. He suggested I query some of Reuters’ Venezuela-based reporters, which I did a few days later. In my email to them, I passed along a list of news articles since August 2017, when Trump first dramatically intensified economic sanctions...
