Indonesia Committing Secret Genocide In West Papua

Yapen, West Papua - I am full of grief to learn reports that 4 more West Papuan people were killed and 8 more shot in cold blood by the Indonesian military and police in Yapen last week. According to recent reports, on 1st December the Indonesian military raided Wanampompi village in the Angkaisera district on Yapen Island. The villagers were simply raising the West Papuan national flag and peacefully commemorating West Papua National Day, which is marked internationally with a Global Flag Raising. But while hundreds of people around the world were able to freely raise the West Papuan flag and show their support for West Papua’s freedom, West Papuans were arrested beaten and killed just for doing so.

Hundreds attended the arts build and training camp and many times more took to the streets. Three energetic and colorful marches and rallies over two days shut down the US Trade Representative's Office, stopped at the White House, took over the front door of the US Chamber of Commerce, swarmed the lobby of Morgan Stanley, shut down streets and the entrance to Monsanto and performed actions of solidarity in front of embassies of TPP countries. On the third day, a group visited Congressional leaders to deliver TPP toilet paper rolls.

West Papua has been under brutal Indonesian military control for the past fifty years and extraction is taking place against the will of the people. Indonesia is the largest island nation and the fourth most populated country in the world. Indonesia is a large exporter and plans to join the TPP. If it does so, the struggles of the West Papuans will be even harder as there will be greater legal standing for transnational corporations to destroy the environment, and with that, their way of life which is closely connected to the Earth. I invite you to learn more about this struggle and to show your support for the West Papuan people on Tuesday December 1 by raising a West Papuan Flag and sharing a photo of that. Spread the word. We cannot continue to ignore the genocide of the West Papuan people.

Twenty Haleakala Protectors Arrested By Maui Police

By Trinette Furtado. (Wailuku, Maui) Twenty protectors of Haleakalā were arrested Thursday night by Maui Police after the second blockade in just a month, of a construction convoy for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST.) The telescope is still in court after more than ten years of strong opposition from Kānaka Maoli, lineal descendants, cultural advisors and Maui residents, but that has not stopped DKIST from pursuing permanent damage to the mountain "for purely selfish research" (according to an astronomer who uses the scopes currently atop Haleakalā). The project has begun construction regardless of apparent violations of state laws on Haleakalā, Maui. The contested project, is still awaiting judgment in court and disregards environmental, cultural, archaeological and conservation laws with the support and approval of the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

"We need to know our history, where we have been will guide us to where we are going. " said Wendsler Nosie Sr., Apache. “The Apache Stronghold visited our relatives who never made it back home. It was a real emotional experience for all of us. The Chiricahua Apache children who were there did not arrive as students like other tribes, but arrived as Prisoners of War,” Nosie said after being present at the Carlisle Indian School cemetery.

San Carlos, AZ – A group of spiritual runners who are members of the San Carlos Tribe, some from the Navajo Nation and others from other various Indigenous Peoples, began their journey from Dzil Ncha Si An (Mount Graham) on Sunday, July 5 and arrived on Monday, July 6, at Chi’Chil’Bilda’Goteel (Oak Flat) on ancestral Apache land deemed holy and sacred to the San Carlos Apaches and surrounding tribes. Earlier on February 5, a spiritual march also began from the San Carlos Apache tribal headquarters to Oak Flat where occupation continues today. The spiritual journey of the Apache Stronghold caravan led by Wendsler Nosie, Sr., former Tribal Chairman and now the Peridot District Council for the San Carlos Apache Tribe, first stopped at the Gila River and Salt River Indian communities for spiritual prayers.

By Aaron Mair in Sierra Club - Last weekend I was honored to join more than 5,000 citizen activists in the Tar Sands Resistance March from the Mississippi River to the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul to protest the expansion of the Alberta Clipper tar sands pipeline and other fossil fuel projects that are threatening the Midwest. The march, co-sponsored by the Sierra Club, was the largest anti-tar sands event ever in the region. Headed up by many indigenous leaders, including Tom Goldtooth of the Indigenous Environmental Network and Winona LaDuke of Honor the Earth, the march was a moving demonstration of the diversity of the growing anti-tar sands movement in the Midwest.

By Alberta Native News - On June 5, 2015, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta released Justice Simpson’s decision rejecting in part the Application to Strike brought by the defendant, oil giant PennWest Petroleum Ltd.(NYSE: PWE, TSE:PWT), who is being sued by the Lubicon Lake Nation, as represented by Chief Bernard Ominayak and the Lubicon Council in Ominayak v Penn West Petroleum Ltd. In March 2015, the parties had appeared before Justice Simpson in Peace River, AB, where PennWest argued that the entire action should be struck because it amounted to an abuse of process, pleading that the action was duplicative of a proceeding brought against Alberta and Canada and that the action constituted a collateral attack on the oil company’s authorizations.

Indigenous Name Change Considered For Fort George Park

By Charelle Evelyn in Prince George Citizen - Fort George Park may get a new moniker if city council backs a recommendation to rename it in honour of the local First Nation. Coun. Murry Krause has suggested changing the name to Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park as a step towards acknowledging "historic wrongs that have profoundly impacted generations of the Lheidli T'enneh people." Before it was a city space, Fort George Park was part of a Lheidli T'enneh village that was destroyed in 1913. A cemetery is all that remains of the settlement that was burned down to forcibly remove people from their homes. In a report to council, Krause - who chairs the Union of B.C. Municipalities' First Nations relations committee - said the city's centennial celebrations provide a strong opportunity for Prince George to "strengthen its relationship with the Lheidli T'enneh through meaningful acts of reconciliation."

It has delayed previous attempts over the past few years by Congress to pass Fast Track legislation that would allow the President to sign international agreements like the TPP, Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) into law before they go to Congress for restricted review, no amendments and only an up-or-down vote. This year, the President and Republican leadership are doing all that they can to get Fast Track. They want to complete the TPP but final negotiations have stalled until Congress passes Fast Track.

Native Tribes Declare Sovereignty From Maine

By Alex Freeman in The Fifth Column News - The new Order maintains that native tribes in Maine retain their sovereignty, but holds that they now have a “relationship between equals with its own set of responsibilities,” yet declares that tribal lands, forms of tribal governance and natural resources controlled by the native tribes are subject to the laws and jurisdiction of the State of Maine. The takeover of lands was prompted by an EPA letter to the State, and claims that lack of Tribal participation in “the State’s interests” required the usurpation of Tribal sovereignty. The Letter, in fact, actually supports the Tribal position, as the Tribal standards of environmental protection are much stricter than those of the EPA or the State of Maine. Those close to the Penobscot Tribe tell The Fifth Column that LePage threatened to sue the EPA over the proposed new regulations, leading the Agency to back down.
