Climate Activists Protest At Headquarters Of Global Ad Giant WPP

Climate campaigners turned out on Wednesday in London to occupy the lobby of UK-based communications giant WPP, demanding that the company stop working for the fossil fuel industry. As demonstrators inside staged a “die-in” — wrapping themselves in shrouds emblazoned with logos of Shell, BP, and other WPP clients — a grim reaper figure in front of the building climbed atop a mock-up of an oil rig and set off a plume of black–coloured smoke. Protesters also unfurled a 15-metre banner in front of the building which declared “WPP are climate criminals, ban fossil fuel advertising”.

Can We Build Public And Political Support For Tackling Inequality?

Wherever you live these days, you’re likely seeing plenty of evidence that political polarization is increasing all around you. Some of this polarization is reinforcing conventional left-right fault lines. Elsewhere in the world, other divisions — cultural, social, geographic, intergenerational — have ripped up and replaced those traditional polarizations. Socio-economic inequality has, of course, long rated as one of those conventional fault lines. The right has typically seen inequality as an inevitable — perhaps even necessary and desirable — byproduct of the dynamism that drives prosperity. Inequality, this argument contends, incentivizes and rewards effort and entrepreneurial risk-taking.

Counter-Terrorism Police Arrest Four People After Paint Sprayed On Planes

Counter-terrorism police have arrested four people in connection to the protest by Palestine Action at RAF Brize Norton, in which two activists on scooters spray painted two British military planes with red paint and evaded security and police. Three have been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Another was arrested of assisting an offender. The embarrassment caused to the government by the recent Palestine Action incursion at Brize Norton, has led rapidly to the announced proscription of Palestine Action. Keir Starmer explicitly referred to the spray-painting of the planes as “vandalism”, not ‘terrorism’ and many Parliamentarians including former Justice Secretary Lord Falconer, have stated that the protest may be criminal damage, but not terrorism.

Israel’s War On Gaza: Who Are Palestine Action?

The British government is set to ban the direct action group Palestine Action under anti-terror legislation after activists broke into RAF Brize Norton earlier this month and spray-painted two planes. The group said the airbase was targeted because flights leave there daily "for RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, a base used for military operations in Gaza and across the Middle East". The activists damaged Airbus Voyager aircraft, which carry military cargo and refuel fighter jets and military planes. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said she will bring legislation to proscribe the group before Parliament on 30 June.

Radar Plans May Allow United States To Dominate Space From Wales

Plans to build a space radar station could allow US President Donald Trump to dominate space from Wales, campaigners have said. More than 15,000 people have signed an online petition opposing Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans to build 27 radar dishes at Cawdor Barracks in Brawdy, Pembrokeshire. Jim Scott, a spokesman for the People Against Radar Campaign (PARC), said "provoking China" by supporting US military aims "where there is no rational imperative to do so" would be a bad idea. The UK government said Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) was vital to track objects in deep space and protect satellite and communication and navigation networks.

Two Thirds Of UK Workers Will Face Deadly Temperatures By 2030

As the UK faces increasingly extreme summer heat due to climate breakdown, new research has revealed that up to two-thirds of British workers could be exposed to dangerously high temperatures at work by the end of this decade. What’s more, these climate crisis-exacerbated deadly temperatures will affect virtually the entire workforce by the end of the century under current emissions trajectories. These are the findings of a new report titled A New Deal for Working People: Extreme Heat. Independent research institute Autonomy produced the damning new revelations, which argues that the UK is failing to protect workers from rising heat.

Susan Abulhawa: Censored At Oxford After Witnessing Gaza Genocide

Few Western voices have braved the gates of Gaza during Israel’s ongoing military assault. Fewer still have returned to tell the story. Susan Abulhawa, a Palestinian-American writer and humanitarian, is one of them. In this sobering episode of “The Watchdog,” Abulhawa sits down with host Lowkey to describe the irreversible psychological toll of witnessing Israel’s war on Gaza from inside the Strip and the political price of telling the truth in the West. “I wish I never left,” she says, recounting her time in Gaza earlier this year. “I left thinking I was going to come back in a couple of months to resupply and bring back in medicines and supplies.”

UK Prosecutors Collaborate With Israel To Persecute Activists

UK prosecutors are colluding with Israeli embassy officials to classify protesters resisting Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza as terrorists and to imprison them on heavily politicized grounds, an investigation by The Grayzone journalist Kit Klarenberg showed. “Documents released by the British government reveal that London has been coordinating with Israeli officials to prosecute protestors associated with activist group Palestine Action for disrupting the operations of Elbit Systems, which manufactures deadly weapons being used in the genocide in Gaza,” Klarenberg wrote. The documents suggest that Israel has successfully lobbied the UK to abandon well-established legal standards in order to charge activists resisting Israel’s genocide under harsh counter-terror laws.

Councillors Demand RCV Engines Stop Supplying Components For Israel’s Drones

A growing coalition of Dorset councillors demand that local company RCV Engines Ltd immediately halt the export of engine components used in Israeli military drones. Local elected officials have signed an open urging the Dorset-based firm to cease its complicity in Israel’s Gaza genocide. The call follows damning revelations by Declassified UK. The investigative outlet found that RCV supplies engine components to Israel Aerospace Industries’ APUS 25 quadcopter. Israel has used these in deadly attacks on Palestinian civilians, including children, in Gaza. Dorset-based campaign umbrella the Olive Branch Coalition has coordinated the open letter to demand an end to the local company’s complicity.

UK Court Orders Police Return Devices To Journalist Asa Winstanley

A British court has ruled that UK police must hand back electronic devices seized from The Electronic Intifada’s Asa Winstanley in October 2024, in what lawyers have described as a “resounding victory for press freedom.” All seven seized items were handed back on Tuesday, Winstanley confirmed in a statement. The recorder of London, Mark Lucraft, London’s highest circuit judge, on 13 May ruled that a search warrant used by London’s Metropolitan Police to seize seven items from Winstanley’s home was unlawfully issued. “I am very troubled by the way in which the search warrant was drafted, approved and granted where items were to be seized from a journalist,” Judge Lucraft wrote in his ruling.

The Empire Never Died

There’s long been a debate over whether Britain’s Empire — the largest the world has ever known — was a good or bad thing. There’s another question though – did it really end? In some ways, obviously it did. Some 62 territories have gained independence from the U.K. in recent decades, mainly during the period from India’s fight for independence in 1947 until Zimbabwe’s in 1980. But King Charles is still the head of state of 14 Commonwealth territories, from Australia to Saint Lucia, and the U.K. controls a further 14 “Overseas Territories,” such as Gibraltar and on the island of Cyprus. The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation has a list of 17 territories which are “non-self governing,” or colonies in all but name. In 10 of them, the U.K. is the current administering power.

Climate Resistance Disrupted Luxury Lifestyle Event

Climate Resistance infiltrated luxury lifestyle event ‘The Elite London’ at Wycombe Air Park near London on Saturday 17 May. Activists disrupted the showcase of private jets, yachts, and hypercars, with banners and chants. Sitting in the centre of ‘Fly Before You Buy’ private jets fair at The Elite London, the protesters chanted to abolish billionaires. They did so until security physically removed them from the event. ‘The Elite London’ is an annual showcase of 150 ‘jet-set lifestyle’ brands, united by their high cost, from private aircrafts and luxury cars, to boutique properties and high-end travel. The event invited attendees to arrive by plane, or fly from London to Wycombe by helicopter.

Activists Showed Up JCB For ‘Bulldozer Genocide’ At 80th Anniversary Event

On Sunday 18 May, British bulldozer manufacturer JCB was due to celebrate its 80th anniversary at its headquarters in Rocester in the British midlands with a so-called ‘sportive’, a cycle ride which aimed to raise money for the children’s charity NSPCC. However, the sportive did not go according to plan thanks to people highlighting JBC complicity with Israel. Activists from the Stop JCB Demolitions Campaign disrupted the event. They turned it into an expose of JCB’s complicity in ethnic cleansing and genocide. On top of this, they shamed NSPCC for accepting funds from a company which has destroyed children’s lives in Palestine, India, and Kashmir, plunging them into homelessness, poverty, and lasting trauma.

Diplomatic Chess, Ukraine The Pawn

As was universally expected, little came out of Istanbul this week, where Ukrainian and Russian delegations met with the ostensible purpose of exploring a negotiated settlement of the proxy war the U.S. provoked three years ago. It is an odd state of affairs when even the people doing the talking did not anticipate anything useful to emerge from their talking. After less than two hours of negotiation, the two sides agreed only to future talks on subsidiary questions: a prisoner exchange and a 30–day ceasefire — a ceasefire Kiev and its Western backers refused for years but are now desperate to implement.

Arsenal FC Face Legal Action For Firing Staff Over Pro-Palestine Posts

Arsenal Football Club is facing legal action after sacking long-serving kit-man Mark Bonnick after he expressed solidarity with Palestine on social media. With assistance from the European Legal Support Centre (ELSC), 61-year-old Bonnick has filed a legal claim for unfair dismissal. A lifelong Arsenal supporter, he had officially worked at the club for 12 years, and an additional 10 years as a contractor, amounting to 22 years of service, before being abruptly sacked on Christmas Eve 2024. His dismissal followed a coordinated online smear campaign by pro-Israel Twitter accounts that accused him of antisemitism for posts opposing Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Mark’s dismissal is part of a wider crackdown on lawful political expression and a disturbing pattern of political purges in the workplace.
