Red-Green Alliance: A Green Earth With Peace And Room For Us All

The world economy is characterized by major economic inequalities and by a production system that has already exceeded the limits of what is globally sustainable. Today we see upheaval and war, recurring deep economic crises, climate change, over-exploitation of resources, deep poverty, slavery, increasing inequality, authoritarian and undemocratic regimes, and gross human rights violations. At the same time, we are approaching an ecological disaster with lightning speed. The main reason is that the capitalist system is based on exploitation and repression. It is also the main obstacle to solving the world’s problems.

Extinction Rebellion Protests Stop Business As Usual Across The Planet

The next climate crisis campaign of Extinction Rebellion has begun. Across the globe, activists blocked roads and staged demonstrations in big cities around the globe Monday, part of a wide-ranging series of protests demanding much more urgent action against climate change. Associated Press reported that "Demonstrators stopped traffic in European cities including Berlin, London, Paris and Amsterdam. In New York, activists smeared themselves — and emblems of Wall Street — in fake blood and lay in the street. In some cities, activists chained themselves to vehicles or pitched tent camps and vowed not to budge."

Vista High School Students Demand Climate Action

Students from Rancho Buena Vista High School organized a sit-in at Vista City Hall Sept. 27 to demand a stronger climate action plan. Close to a hundred people attended, most under the age of 18. Vista has a Climate Action Plan, which is required by California law, but it has not been implemented. According to organizer of the sit-in Leana Cortez:  “[The plan] was written in 2012. Nothing. We’re in 2019, almost 2020. Still nothing. We do have problems with the plan overall, It’s a little bit diluted. However, I think our biggest concern is that it hasn’t been implemented, because we are running out of time.”

Solutionary Rail Means Deep Cuts To Greenhouse Gases

Electrify the trains: Electric cars and trucks will require resource-intensive battery manufacture and disposal. Electrifying the railroad, on the other hand, can take advantage of the fixed infrastructure of rail transport; like some bus lines in cities today, electric locomotives could receive electrical power by catenary wire accessed by a pantograph or an electrified third rail. An additional advantage of electric locomotives results from equipping them for regenerative braking – different from today’s diesel-powered trains equipped for dynamic braking, where energy is lost as heat.

School Strikers Threaten To Boycott RSC Over BP Sponsorship

Today, school strikers from twelve cities, towns and regions will send a letter to the Royal Shakespeare Company calling on it to immediately drop BP. The oil giant currently sponsors the theatre company’s £5 ticket scheme for 16-25-year-olds, but following the record-breaking protests last Friday, the school strike movement is turning its attention to the way in which BP is targeting their age-group directly through arts sponsorship.

What Might Systems Change Look Like?

The UKYCC is back for another 'systems change' article - this week on degrowth. To understand what constitutes systems change, we need to first talk about what isn’t systems change. Have you ever heard of the three-legged stool of sustainability (also known as the three pillars of sustainability)? The three-legged stool is the most common model used when businesses and governments start thinking about social and environmental issues. The idea goes that if the legs on the stool - the economic, social and environmental realms of the world - are balanced, we are achieving a sustainable system.

Tired of Inaction Climate Activists Descend on Coal Plant in Bow, NH

Over 60 individuals participating in nonviolent direct action walked into the plant through the train tracks. There was a large police presence at the plant and on the surrounding roads. As soon as they crossed the barricade into the plant property, half the group was arrested. Not long after, police wearing what appeared to be riot gear descended on the group and arrested the rest of them. They were taken out of the plant in four County Sheriff vans and a school bus and escorted to Merrimack County Jail. The latest count was 67 individuals arrested. While those individuals were being arrested, a rally of over 300 people sang, chanted, and cheered on the action.

Greta Thunberg Isn’t The Only Voice Of Her Generation

On Friday, my 12-year-old son carried his handmade cardboard protest sign to one of the thousands of climate strikes around the world, along with five of his classmates. His sign read, “Where you gonna hide from the hell you made?” This die-hard rock ’n’ roll fan had tapped an obscure song by his favorite band—Queen—called “White Man,” about the genocide of Native Americans, and picked out the perfect line to describe his rage at our human-made climate crisis. My angry preteen was one of an estimated 4 million people who marched all over the planet Friday in what is considered the largest climate change-related protest action in history.

With Over 6 Million People Worldwide, Climate Strikes Largest Coordinated Global Uprising Since Iraq War Protests

Climate strikes over the last seven days drew over 6.6 million people into the streets around the world, putting the week-long action on par with the 2003 global protest against the U.S.-lead invasion of Iraq. Friday's 600,000 strong demonstration in Montreal made the total number of people who took part in the seven days of action "almost certainly the largest demonstration our planet has yet seen about climate change," said 350.org founder Bill McKibben.

Doctors’ Climate Blockade

Doctors backing the Extinction Rebellion movement have blockaded the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to highlight the impact of climate change on public health. Thirty doctors from all over the UK joined the protest on Wednesday to call on the Government to take rapid action to create a carbon neutral health service. Two doctors scaled the building to glue themselves to the glass porch over the entrance, while several others held a banner reading "government inaction will cost thousands of lives".

Out Of Office: DC Streets Shut Down Again By Climate Activists

The groups that shut down 22 intersections in Washington, D.C. on Monday were at it again Friday morning. This time, they took to the streets to march for climate action. “Climate change is happening right now,” said Kaela Bamberger, an organizer for climate activism group Extinction Rebellion DC. “The extreme weather and the problems derived from all types of climate change will only become more severe. That momentum doesn’t stop, so we can’t either.”

Climate Change and Consciousness Shift

But it’s the secular version thereof, which means that humanity is responsible for both its cause and — if possible — its transcendence. All we need to do is change everything about the way the high-tech, global society functions in the next dozen years, in the process countermanding a political structure completely committed to (and profiting from) the status quo that’s creating the problem in the first place. And modestly complicating the scenario is the fact that there’s no universal agreement on the changes that are necessary to maintain Planet Earth in a livable state, for humans and most other life forms.

Greta Thunberg: “I Am Just A Messenger…Our Very Future Is At Risk”

Recently I’ve seen many rumors circulating about me and enormous amounts of hate. This is no surprise to me. I know that since most people are not aware of the full meaning of the climate crisis (which is understandable since it has never been treated as a crisis) a school strike for the climate would seem very strange to people in general. So let me make some things clear about my school strike. In may 2018 I was one of the winners in a writing competition about the environment held by Svenska Dagbladet, a Swedish newspaper.

DC Climate Strike Plans To Return To The Streets On Friday

Since we Shut Down DC on Monday, the US Government has shown no indication that it will act on climate breakdown. As a result, the Coalition to Shut Down DC will disrupt business-as-usual in the nation’s capital again. The Coalition to Shut Down DC will round out the week of Global Climate Strikes with another series of acts of civil disobedience, this time targeting specific climate criminals. Global heating doesn’t stop for morning rush hour -- neither will we.

Faster Global Warming May Bring Much More Heat

LONDON,19 September, 2019 − We could in the near future be experiencing much more heat than we now expect. As carbon dioxide levels rise, global warming could accelerate, rather than merely keep pace with the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is a lesson to be drawn from new computer simulations of the conditions that must have precipitated a dramatic shift in global climate 56 million years ago, when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rose at least 1000 parts per million (ppm) and perhaps substantially higher.
