Lebanon Deadly Pager Blasts: What We Know So Far

At least 12 people were killed and nearly 3,000 injured on Tuesday when pagers commonly used for communication by Hezbollah members exploded almost simultaneously across Lebanon. The details of how this highly sophisticated attack was carried out remain unclear, though Hezbollah has blamed its adversary, Israel. The Israeli military has so far declined to comment. Here is what we know so far. When And Where Did The Blasts Take Place? The blasts began in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, with scores of incidents reported in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh and other areas of the country at about 3.45pm (12.45pm GMT) on Tuesday. According to footage seen by Middle East Eye, some of the detonations occurred after the pagers went off, prompting their owners to bring them close to their faces or hands to check the screens.

Attacks on the Venezuelan electoral system have reached the terrain of cyberwarfare, according to the complaints made by President Nicolás Maduro, the authorities of the National Electoral Council (CNE), and the Attorney General’s Office (MP). The president of the CNE, Elvis Amoroso, issued a second electoral bulletin on August 2 at noon, where he also reported that there are still signs of massive computer attacks from different parts of the world against the CNE and the Venezuelan state-owned telecommunications companies, which has delayed the transmission of the voting minutes and the announcement of electoral results.

Researchers Find Massive Anti-Russian ‘Bot Army’

A team of researchers at the University of Adelaide have found that as many as 80 percent of tweets about the 2022 Russia-Ukraine invasion in its early weeks were part of a covert propaganda campaign originating from automated fake “bot” accounts. An anti-Russia propaganda campaign originating from a “bot army” of phony automated Twitter accounts flooded the internet at the start of the war. The research shows that of the more than 5 million tweets studied, 90.2 percent (both bot and non-bot) came from accounts that were pro-Ukraine, with fewer than 7 percent of the accounts being classed as pro-Russian. The university researchers also found these automated tweets had been purposely used to drive up fear amongst people targeted by them, boosting a high level of statistically measurable “angst” in the online discourse.

Worst of all, it does so under the guise of “activism.” The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace recently published a paper titled, “Growing Cyber Activism in Thailand.” In it, readers may have expected a detailed description of how independent local activists were using information technology to inform the public, communicate with policymakers and organise themselves more efficiently. Instead, readers would find a list of US-funded fronts posing as “nongovernmental organisations” (NGOs) engaged in subversion, including attacks carried out against Thai government websites aimed at crippling them, the dumping of private information of ordinary citizens online and coercing policymakers into adopting their foreign-funded and directed agenda.
