Beyond Extreme Energy’s Fast For No New Permits

By Moral Action Climate - Beyond Extreme Energy will be conducting a fast at FERC that will run from Tuesday September 8 until Friday the 25th, which is the day after the Pope's speech to Congress. Those fasting in DC will spend the day in front of FERC at 888 1st St. NE. On September 25th we are calling upon people to join us at FERC as we end our fast and try to deliver copies of Laudato Si’ to the five FERC Commissioners. Our rationale for undertaking this action can be found at http://beyondextremeenergy.org. As we say there, “Beyond Extreme Energy has decided to organize a long-term, water-only “Fast for No New Permits” this September in front of FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. We also encourage people to fast individually where they live and/or to organize local solidarity fasts during this same time period.

FERC Gets Earful: Scores Turn Up The Heat On Pipeline Regulations

By Richie Davis in The Recorder - Federal regulators got an earful Wednesday night from nearly 600 people at an environmental scoping hearing on Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co.’s proposed Northeast Energy Direct project. The region’s entire state legislative delegation, Congressman James McGovern and many others of the dozens of people who signed up late in the afternoon to speak in a nearly packed Greenfield Middle School auditorium buzzing with fans called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to postpone the scoping process that will guide the planned environmental impact statement on TGP’s proposed project for which the company plans to file an application in October and have in service in the fall of 2018.

Why I Will Be Fasting For No New Permits

By Greg Yost in Beyond Extreme Energy - The trouble with FERC is that it is staffed and run through a revolving door with the industry it’s supposed to regulate. FERC is essentially unable to resist giving the gas industry anything it wants. This means billions of dollars are being spent on new infrastructure which will lock in fossil fuel dependence for another generation. At the precise time we need to be using our limited financial resources to transition to a new kind of economy based on clean energy, the gas and oil companies want us ratepayers to underwrite their efforts to squeeze the last remaining profits from their dirty and outdated businesses. So that’s why Beyond Extreme Energy is organizing a water-only Fast For No New Permits in front of FERC from September 8th–25th. Participants will gather in DC where some will fast for the entire period while others will join it as they are able. The fast coincides with Pope Francis’ visit to the United States and his address to the Congress and the United Nations.

WASHINGTON, DC--At the Natural Gas Roundtable luncheon in DC on Tuesday, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Norman Bay announced his agency would soon issue a 'best practices manual' to help the gas industry win permits for fracked gas infrastructure projects. As he spoke to a packed audience of gas lobbyists, industry representatives, and their supporters in Congress, Bay echoed advice he received from a gas pipeline CEO. “While you certainly want to receive a certificate from FERC, you also want to earn a social license from the communities along the path of the pipeline," he said.

In "We are all Greeks Now," Chris Hedges connects corporate capitalism to the many crises we face. He writes, "Corporate profit is God. It does not matter who suffers." When profit is worshiped, truth is sacrificed and all manner of deception is justified."

‘Hey FERC: No New Permits!’ Protest

Washington, DC - As Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE) promised, it returned to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) this morning, renewing its May "FERCus" demonstrations, to stage three new interrelated demonstrations, demanding that there be "no new permits" for fracked (aka "natural") gas infrastructure. Two demonstrators got through heavy federal police security to enter the FERC Commissioners' meeting. When the meeting was underway, they stood up to address the Commissioners and demand that there be "no new permits". The protesters were escorted from the building by federal police.

There are so many crises today and we have been focused on trying to stop those crises from worsening (“stop the machine”) while using the fights and partial victories to build capacity for the movement. We have avoided putting emphasis on elections in part because it is important not to get caught up in the electoral cycle which has been nothing more than a periodic horse race between corporate candidates chosen through a rigged system. Instead, we hoped that more people would step out of the electoral cycle and take a longer-term view of the work that must be done to build a movement with real power.

What The Approval Of A Natural Gas Export Terminal Means

A grassroots coalition, No Pipeline Expansion (NOPE), stated today that the Department of Energy’s (DOE) approval of Pieridae’s Goldboro liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Nova Scotia, Canada confirms their position that natural gas from Spectra Energy’s northeast pipeline expansions will be shipped overseas. According to the Pieridae website, “the Pieridae facility is located adjacent to the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, a 1,400-kilometre transmission pipeline system built to transport natural gas between developments in Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada and the northeastern United States.” The Spectra Maritimes & Northeast pipeline connects directly to the Spectra Algonquin pipeline in Beverly, MA. Exports by Spectra, assisted by the proposed Kinder Morgan greenfield pipeline and Peabody lateral, could feed most of Pieridae’s needs for gas.

Faith Leaders To FERC: ‘Listen To The Earth’

FERC has been the target of protests by anti-fracking activists and members of communities adversely affected by pipelines, compressor stations and gas storage facilities which the agency approves. Recently the gas industry has been in the process of upgrading and enlarging its vast network of infrastructure to deliver gas obtained by hydraulic fracturing. Protesters held a 50-foot banner, painted with scenes illustrating various gas infrastructure projects around the country, using it to block the entrances to FERC. Most of them originated from the Mid-Atlantic region or the Northeast, but some had come from as far away as Iowa and California. The morning blockade came after twenty protesters spent the night on the sidewalk in front of the building beside a canvas reading, “FERC Destroys Communities.”

Gas Export Opponents Hold Blockade At FERC

Protests against the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission heated up as more than 80 activists blocked the doors and streets in front of and behind the agency, delaying employees from entering the building for a few hours. They also blockaded North Capitol St. directly behind the agency by erecting an 18-foot metal tripod from which a woman was suspended by a climbing harness. They held large banners saying, “No Fracking #StopGasExports” and “The United States of Fracking.” Department of Homeland Security officers, who were assembled in front of the building, seemed caught by surprise by the blockade on North Capitol St. and were slow to react. After several warnings, protesters removed the tripod before arrests were made. The protest was part of a campaign called “Stop the FERCus,” organized by coalition group Beyond Extreme Energy.

Activists Occupy Interior Department To Protest Arctic Drilling

On day two of a series of protests called “FERCus,” activists played a cat-and-mouse game with police, starting out early in the morning at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, proceeding to the U.S. Department of the Interior and then returning to FERC by midday. They began with an early morning sit-in at FERC as employees arrived at work. Later, they ducked into the Metro, confounding police who were closely following their movements. They showed up an hour later at the Department of the Interior to protest Arctic drilling. (The Obama administration recently conditionally approved Shell Oil’s plan to drill in the Chukchi Sea off of Alaska’s North Slope.) Activists were ejected by security after occupying the lobby for several minutes.

Week Of Protests Gets Under Way At FERC

About 30 activists from as far away as New Mexico rallied today in the first of a series of protests at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. FERC, they say, harms thousands of people through the pipelines and gas infrastructure projects it approves. Carrying signs and banners, they picketed FERC headquarters. Dozens of heavily armed Federal Protective Service officers erected barricades and were stationed at the doors and a carport entryway. “We’re here at FERC because they systematically destroy communities basically by making their local community rights null and void,” said Jimmy Betts of Beyond Extreme Energy, the coalition group which organized the protest. He called FERC’s actions “communicide.”

9 Days Of Protest To Expose FERC

Several days of protests are about to kick off in Washington, DC in response to the increasing toll which hydraulic fracking is taking on communities in the United States and the global climate. A coalition group called Beyond Extreme Energy has planned direct actions on the doorstep of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which approves construction of interstate gas pipelines, compressor stations, gas storage facilities and other infrastructure around the country. On weekdays from May 21 to 29, the protests, called “FERCus,” will highlight the agency’s sham process of evaluating infrastructure projects, which always favors industry. People in communities affected by these projects say that their voices aren’t heard, and that FERC disregards the consequences to their health and safety while abusing powers of eminent domain.
