Genocide

An International Civil Society Movement For Palestine Is Needed

Let us be clear. Gaza was a crime, even before Israel’s current genocidal war. One of the world’s most densely populated spaces served for years as what was essentially the world’s largest open air prison. If not a crime, it was certainly a violation of international law and an affront to human dignity and decency. However, the recent horrifying events perpetrated there seem to have awakened the world’s conscience. Tragically, despite widespread international demonstrations and condemnation no ceasefire has been achieved and Gaza’s humanitarian crisis continues. Those who are not killed by Israel’s relentless bombing will suffer from continued displacement, or, even worse, die from starvation and disease.

Israel’s Genocide Day 384: Israel Ethnically Cleanses Northern Gaza

The Israeli army forcibly expelled Palestinians in northern Gaza from their shelters, as relayed by eyewitness accounts, news reports, and video footage released by Israeli sources. On Wednesday, Israel’s Kan satellite channel aired video footage of Israeli military trucks transferring dozens of blindfolded Palestinian detainees. Kan claimed that the Palestinians were arrested “for interrogation.” The Israeli army also released aerial video footage on Wednesday showing hundreds of Palestinians walking amid the rubble, surrounded by Israeli tanks as they all head in the same direction after being gathered in a destroyed square. The Israeli army reportedly said that it had “evacuated” 20,000 Palestinians from Jabalia.

Chris Hedges Report: The Escalating Crisis In The Middle East

Decades of Islamophobia, relentless propaganda campaigns and heavily financed lobbying efforts have made it difficult to understand the political realities of the Middle East. John Mearsheimer, prominent political scientist, University of Chicago professor and self-proclaimed realist, has consistently demonstrated the courage and ability to bypass the noise, delivering honest and well-informed analysis on global affairs. He joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to lay out what’s happening in the Middle East, from Israel’s genocide in Gaza to its escalating attacks on Lebanon and Iran.

Israelis Call For Global Pressure On Israel For An Immediate Ceasefire

We, Israeli citizens residing in Israel and abroad, call on the international community – the UN and its institutions, the United States, the European Union, the League of Arab States, and all states around the world – to intervene immediately and implement every possible sanction towards achieving an immediate ceasefire between Israel and its neighbors, for the future of both peoples in Israel and Palestine and the peoples of the region and for their rights to security and life. Many of us are veteran activists against the occupation, for peace and mutual existence in this land.

Israel’s Assault On North Gaza’s Last Functioning Hospital

Tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians across northern Gaza have been forced on a death march by the Israeli army since Monday, October 21. Northern Gaza is being emptied of its inhabitants, and one of Israel’s strategies in achieving this goal is to take out the area’s few remaining social institutions: hospitals. As part of its ongoing offensive on northern Gaza, the Israeli army has been trying to clear out the entire area north of Gaza City for the past 18 days. At least 200,000 people continue to stay there, many of them fearing, according to local testimonies, that they will be targeted on the way south or in Israeli-designated “safe zones,” which have been consistently bombarded over recent months.

An ‘Assembly For Palestine’ Showed The Power That People Can Have

Against the backdrop of a seemingly endless genocide with absolute impunity provided from Israel’s Western partners, it can feel like the fight is hopeless as fatigue sets in. Fatigue is human, and arguably it is what our governments are counting on as they drag their feet in opposing the murder and brutalisation of an entire population – indiscriminate of guilt, age, or gender. We have to prepare for this fatigue and restore our energies both individually and collectively if we want to realise an end to arm sales and an unconditional ceasefire, especially when Lebanon is now facing the same threat of destruction and Israel’s attempts to plunge the West into an unjust war across the Middle East.

16th BRICS Summit Opens In Kazan, Russia

During his speech at the ongoing BRICS summit on Wednesday, October 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his desire to see the grouping play a greater role in global affairs and in resolving regional and international challenges. Putin asserted that BRICS unites “like minded countries, civilizations, and cultures” and “all member states stand for equality, good neighborly relations, and mutual respect, for high ideals of friendship, global prosperity, and well-being.” The 16th summit of the 10-member grouping is being held in Russia’s fifth largest city of Kazan from October 22 to October 24.

Black Muslim Leaders Shun Harris For US President

A group of approximately 50 Black Muslim leaders have signed a statement urging Black and Muslim American voters to shun Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the White House and instead back candidates who support a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo on Israel. The new statement, first reported by Middle East Eye, is the latest effort from Muslim community leaders - from imams to scholars, to activists to politicians - telling voters not to choose Vice President Harris in the upcoming November election over her unwillingness to commit to policy changes that would hold Israel accountable for its ongoing war on Gaza and now Lebanon, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and Lebanese people.

Not Too Late For Uncommitted Movement To Hold Democrats Accountable

The activists had them right where they wanted them. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris had done everything they could think of to suppress the growing public outrage over their administration’s complicity in the genocide in Palestine, but hundreds of thousands of potential Democratic voters weren’t giving in. Led by the Uncommitted National Movement, they’d refused to pull the lever for Biden in the primaries, and were now threatening to withhold their support for Harris in November unless she and her current boss placed an embargo on America’s weapons shipments to Israel before the 2024 US presidential election.

Harris Campaign Says She Denies Israel Is Committing Genocide

Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign has clarified that she does not believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza after an incident at a rally suggested that she did.

South African ‘Peace’ Conference Implodes After Organizers Are Outed

In early September, pro-Palestine activists began to receive information about a conference organized by prominent academic Ivor Chipkin and his Johannesburg-based research NGO, the New South Institute (NSI). Launched under the signature name African Global Dialogue, this year’s event was titled “Narrative Conditions Towards Peace in the Middle East.” To many, this was innocuous enough. What could be harmful about engaging in intellectual dialogues that promote peace? Who could oppose, in their words, a critical, yet positive engagement “with a view to opening a discursive space about Israel/Palestine”?

How To Do A Conjunctural Analysis

Reading legacy Western media – which dominates the world information order – is painful. During the genocidal war against Palestinians, for instance, these media outlets (such as CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, and Bild) have been unable to bring themselves to describe the Israeli military’s attacks on Palestinians. At most, and when it suits them, they resort to passive voice (‘Palestinians die’) or to a dangerous form of turning civilian areas into military targets (‘Hezbollah village’ or ‘Hamas command and control centre’).

Israel’s Genocide Day 377: Israel Says It Killed Yahya Sinwar

On Thursday, October 17, the Israeli army radio said that Israel had killed Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar in combat in Rafah. The military stated that it was investigating whether the body that it found following a battle with Palestinian fighters was Sinwar, which had been sent for DNA testing. Later in the day, the Israeli army said that the collected samples matched the DNA record that Israel had on Sinwar from his years of imprisonment in Israeli custody.

I Resigned From Canada’s Largest Broadcasting Corporation

Words can empower, arm, and evoke sentiments that stimulate new ideas, worldviews, and policies. Being the only Muslim in the newsroom, I feared the language the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was using to talk about Palestinians and resistance could ignite similar emotions that justified the U.S. invasion of Iraq and mass killings of innocent civilians in 2001. Days after October 7, 2023, I sat across from a CBC executive who appeared uneasy yet curious about my concerns over CBC’s coverage of Hamas’ attack on Israel. I was appalled by CBC’s lack of historical context between Israel and Palestine and the language used to defend Israel’s massacre of Palestinians.

My Sister Was The 166th Doctor To Be Murdered In Gaza

Your lives will continue. With new events and new faces. They are the faces of your children, who will fill your homes with noise and laughter.” These were the last words written by my sister in a text message to one of her daughters. Dr. Soma Baroud was murdered on October 9 when Israeli warplanes bombed a taxi that carried her and other tired Gazans somewhere near the Bani Suhaila roundabout near Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip. I am still unable to understand whether she was on her way to the hospital, where she worked, or leaving the hospital to go home. Does it even matter?
