Bolivia’s MAS Leader: “Our Advantage Is Not To Be Afraid Of Death In Defense Of The Country”

The arrival of Evo Morales to Argentina was accompanied by a massive arrival of leaders of his party, the Movement to Socialism (MAS), to meet with him and outline the policy to face the coup in Bolivia. Among those who traveled to Buenos Aires for these days was Rodolfo Machaca from the Political Directorate of the MAS, former Deputy Minister of Interculturality and leader of the Single Trade Union Confederation of Peasant Workers of Bolivia (CSUTCB). In dialogue with NOTAS, he denounced the dictatorship of Jeanine Añez which continues to violate human rights, persecuting the population and delivering the country’s natural resources to multinationals. However, he was optimistic about next year’s elections.

Who Gives US The Right To Lecture China About Rights?

A long analysis I wrote about "the Uygur issue" earlier this year will be soon published as a book. For some time now, I have been warning that the West, the United States in particular, is helping radicalize the Uygurs both in and outside China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. I have also mapped the movement of the Uygur radicals through countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, from where they are injected into brutal war zones such as Idlib in Syria. I have worked with Syrian commanders in the Idlib area, and spoke at length with the internally displaced Syrian people...

Human Rights In Chile And At Chile-Controlled COP25: Attack Children, Medics & Civil Society

Then today, 16-year-old #Greta Thunberg was named as Time Magazine‘s person of the year. Celebrating the power of youth. I wonder if either Time or Greta heard about the 15 year old girl in Chile put in the hospital with a critical brain injury by the same country running this year’s UN Climate Summit (COP25)–where Thunberg spoke today, after receiving the award, about the importance of outrage. While Greta spoke about the power of outrage at COP25, it was not ironically cracking down on dissent and ejecting civil society groups en masse over a non-violent protest of ongoing inaction and injustice.

A US Human Rights Group Is Being Sued By Pro-Israel Organizations Over An Alleged Connection To ‘Balloon Terror’

The US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) is the target of a $90 million lawsuit that accuses the group of engaging in environmental terrorism. The legal action was brought forward by the Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) and 12 Americans citizens who live in Israel last month. Although they’re identified as the KKL-JNF in Hebrew, the group is widely known as the Jewish National Fund. The complaint alleges that USCPR has funneled money to the Boycott National Committee (BNC) to be used for terrorist activities and that BNC is directly connected to HAMAS...

COP 25 Climate Summit Opens With Controversy

Santiago, Chile–While the annual UN Climate Summit (COP25) commences in Madrid, protesters across Chile, the country in which the COP was originally planned, are demanding that Chile be stripped of the Presidency of COP 25 due to the human rights abuses happening in Chile. At the same time, Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzón has threatened to have Chile’s President Piñera detained if he attempts to enter the country. Protesters are rising up against Chile’s neoliberal model, imposed under the Pinochet dictatorship. More than two dozen people have been killed in the protests and hundreds have lost eyes as Carabineros de Chile (national police) intentionally shoot metal-filled rubber bullets shotgun-style at people’s heads.

Honduras: A Dangerous Place For Human Rights And Environmental Defenders

Honduras is a dangerous place for human rights defenders. Over 120 environmental activists were killed in Honduras between 2010 and 2017 (according to conservative figures), and many others are continuously threatened, attacked or imprisoned. For women, the risks multiply in a context where the impunity rate for violent crimes against women is 95%. Ten years after the coup d’état in 2009, and following three elections tarnished by fraud, Honduran activists and women human rights defenders (WHRDs) continue to face violent backlash.

Obama Officials Confess Their Sins On Human Rights At J Street

At its just-concluded conference, J Street showed itself to be a potent lobby inside the Democratic Party dedicated to support for Israel and opposition to the Israeli occupation, to the point of cautious expressions of Palestinian solidarity. The lobby group is now The Address for politicians saying they want to condition aid to Israel because of the settlement project. This spirit is in sharp contrast to years in which Democrats waffled on these issues, and J Street helped them waffle. In fact, the most interesting moments at the conference came when Democratic officials had human rights epiphanies...

Columbus, The Indigenous, And Human Progress

Columbus and his successors were not coming into an empty wilderness, but into a world which in some places was as densely populated as Europe itself, where the culture was complex, where human relations were more egalitarian than in Europe, and where the relations among men, women, children, and nature were more beautifully worked out than perhaps any place in the world. They were people without a written language, but with their own laws, their poetry, their history kept in memory and passed on, in an oral vocabulary more complex than Europe's, accompanied by song, dance, and ceremonial drama. They paid careful attention to the development of personality, intensity of will, independence and flexibility, passion and potency, to their partnership with one another and with nature. John Collier, an American scholar who lived among Indians in the 1920s and 1930s in the American Southwest, said of their spirit: "Could we make it our own, there would be an eternally inexhaustible earth and a forever lasting peace."

Geneva Passes Resolution In Favor Of Venezuela’s Human Rights

Jorge Valero acknowledged the UN Human Rights Council for addressing the negative connotations of Washington´s policy against Maduro´s government and the impact of these sanctions on people´s life. During an ordinary session celebrated in Geneva, this Tuesday, UN Human Rights Council passed a project of the resolution called “strengthening cooperation and technical assistance in the field of human rights in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”, informed its permanent representative Jorge Valero.

Court Calls US ‘Enhanced Interrogation Techniques’ Torture

A federal court in San Francisco took the unusual step of using the word “torture” to describe the treatment of a Palestinian man while he was in CIA custody following the Sept. 11 attacks. “It’s the first time an appellate court, to my knowledge, has come right out and said that the enhanced interrogation techniques were torture. We’re no longer going to equivocate.” — Joseph Margulies, a Cornell University law professor The Ninth U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco used the word in a 2-1 ruling to describe the harsh interrogation methods used against a prisoner known as Abu Zubaydah while he was held in clandestine CIA detention facilities overseas. “To use colloquial terms,” said the court wrote, “Abu Zubaydah was tortured.”

Arms Companies Failing To Address Human Rights Risks

As the world’s biggest arms companies prepare to set up shop at a global arms fair in London, a new report by Amnesty International shows how major industry players including Airbus, BAE Systems and Raytheon are not undertaking adequate human rights due diligence which could prevent their products from being used in potential human rights violations and war crimes. For Outsourcing Responsibility, Amnesty International contacted 22 arms companies and asked them to explain how they meet their responsibilities to respect human rights under internationally recognized standards.

The Rise And Fall Of Nicaragua’s ‘Human Rights’ Organizations

When political conflict results in people being killed – especially at the hands of a government – the deaths are not just personal tragedies, they are propaganda material. This happened during last year’s attempted coup in Nicaragua: the alleged death toll was repeated in practically every international media report and invariably blamed on the Ortega government, its police or supporters. A year after the violence ended, not only have the ‘human rights’ bodies whose reports gave the figures credibility begun to tell the truth about what they did, they’ve also started to fall apart as the supply of dollars dries up.

Right2Vote Campaign

This is a nationwide campaign being initiated by people currently confined in the United States. This campaign grew out of the August 21 National Prison Strike Demand #10: The voting rights of all confined citizens serving prison sentences, pretrial detainees, and so-called “ex-felons” must be counted. Representation is demanded. All voices count! To meet this 10th demand a collaborative effort of prison lead organizations and outside allies have an ongoing mission to bridge the gap with people that were formerly confined in order to build a potent voting bloc. The Right 2 Vote campaign has incorporated two initiatives, Bar 2 Ballots and Vote 4 me. Inside U.S prisons, there has been a wave of awareness building amongst those confined who understand that they must gain political power by capturing their right to vote in order to end the dehumanization process in the U.S jails, prisons, and even after release.

CBP Agents Interrogate US Citizen, Seize His Phone, After Venezuela Solidarity Trip

A US citizen has told The Grayzone that the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) service detained him on his way home from Venezuela and violated his privacy. Sergio Lazo Torrez, a 31 year-old Nicaraguan-American, said the CBP forced him to open his cellphone, grilled him about his political beliefs, and demanded information about his contact with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Torrez was returning to the Washington, DC area on the evening of August 2 when he was detained by CBP at Dulles International Airport in Vienna, Virginia. He had just participated in a week-long tour of Venezuela with over a dozen US citizens, including this journalist and two other reporters for The Grayzone.

How To Support The North Carolina Prison Hunger Strike

Requests for notaries necessary for legal actions and grievances against conditions at this razor-wire plantation are being consistently ignored. Many of these grievances are against Scotland denying those held captive in solitary confinement of their recreation time. Scotland's staff will simply claim that recreation is "canceled". NCDOC's own Policy and Procedures (Chapter C, Section .1206 (B)) guarantees that those on "restrictive housing" (solitary confinement) shall be allowed to recreation outside of the cell five days a week for one hour a day. Scotland is violating their own policies and causing severe harm to all those  forced to be confined to a small cell 24/7. Furthermore, Scotland's so-called medical staff conducts what are called “seg checks” at 1am-2am every night when everyone is asleep.
