Status Of The Resistance Movement: Growing, Deepening, Succeeding

So much has been accomplished by Occupy and other social justice movements in the past two years that it is incredible the corporate media and their pundits do not report on what is happening around them. Despite the lack of corporate media coverage, the movement is deepening, creating democratic institutions, stopping some of the worst policies from being pushed by the corporate duopoly and building a broad-based diverse movement. This is not to say things are getting better for the 99%; in fact, quite the opposite is happening. Big business government continues to funnel money to the top while robbing most Americans of the little wealth they had. More Americans are being impacted by the unfair economy and realize that their struggle is not their fault but is the reality of living in a system with deep corruption and dysfunction. Economic injustice is the compost creating fertile ground for the movement to grow.

Hundreds Protest Neo-Nazi Plan For ‘Whites Only’ Town In North Dakota

Hundreds of protesters gathered in a North Dakota town on Sunday to speak out against plans by an American Nazi group to buy up property and take over the local government in an effort to build a bastion against diversity. About 300 protesters, including some 200 Native Americans from nearby reservations, gathered outside the Leith City Hall where Jeff Schoep, leader of the National Socialist Movement presented his plans for turning the tiny North Dakota town – population 24 – into a segregated place where whites can live among themselves.

Israel Refuses To Recognize Children of Detainees Conceived by ‘Smuggled Semen’

The Israeli Prison Administration at the Nafha Detention camp in the Negev Desert on Saturday refused to allow detainee Abdul-Karim Reemawi to visit with his wife and newborn son, as the child was conceived through artificial insemination using smuggled semen. The Prison Administration said that the detainee never fathered a son before he was taken prisoner, and that it does not recognize his son as the father’s semen was obtained illegally. Israel does not allow any conjugal visits to Palestinian prisoners, held in its various prisons and prison camps.

Wrongfully Convicted US Torture Victim Talks About Being “A Free Man At Last”

"After he was dragged from the apartment, Marvin was beaten by Chicago police under the command of Jon Burge. So was his co-defendant Ronnie Kitchen. Burge and the white officers and detectives he commanded are known to have used torture techniques against as many as 200 African American and Latino suspects--suffocation with a typewriter cover; electrical shocks to sensitive areas, including their genitals; Russian roulette; and savage beatings. Unlike Marvin, Ronnie signed a false confession to the crime. "I never held it against him," Marvin says. "I was a bigger guy, I could take it--I weighed over 200 pounds. Ronnie, he was a little thing, like 150 pounds. They just beat on him. I could hear him screaming down the hall." Deena adds, "It wasn't his fault that he signed a confession. What was he supposed to do? It was the cops that were wrong."

Canadians Detained in Cairo Begin Hunger Strike

Two Canadian men held for more than a month in an Egyptian prison without formal charges announced this week they had begun a hunger strike demanding their release from Cairo’s infamous Tora Prison where political prisoners are languishing. The two men’s plight, largely ignored by mainstream media for weeks, has finally spurred Canadian coverage of what is being described by family and friends as gross human rights “violations.” Tarek Loubani and John Greyson were arrested in Cairo on August 16, reportedly en route to make a film about hospitals in Gaza. Government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Occupy.com that the pair are being investigated for their role at a Muslim Brotherhood-led protest that saw violence.

“I Am Troy Davis”: Supporters, Family Of Georgian Man Executed In 2011 Push To End Death Penalty

"TROY ANTHONY DAVIS: You know, everything we do today is going to clear the way for better tomorrow. Everything is coming to a head and people are starting to wake up more and more. It’s really inspiring for kids to get involved because that is what we really need, because they’re going to be our future, and to know that they’re concerned about human rights, about activist work and, you know, the justice system, it really gives me hope that things are going to change. This is just the beginning of something that is about to blow up to the point to the point where we are going to see some sort of success. We are going to win this fight. We are going to continue to open eyes, we’re going to continue to open these prison doors. We will continue to hold accountable all those that are in charge of this — these unjust systems. And together, we can realize that if we let our voice work and activism work be seen and be heard, that there’s nothing that we can’t change. A positive aspect of this world. We can correct all the wrongs if we just continue to stand together. And that is what is most important. We need to continue to stand together and educate each other and don’t give up the fight."

A Tale Of Two Responses To LGBTI Violence

"The US is rightfully disturbed by deteriorating conditions for LGBTI people in Russia. In addition to legally sanctioned homophobia, widespread LGBTI hate crimes include harassment, torture and murder - and entrenched attitudes are responsible for a lamentable increase in suicides. Yet very few people have heard about the ubiquitous violence against LGBTI people in Honduras since the 2009 coup, despite a per capita LGBTI homicide rate that vastly outpaces Russia's. In the four years since democratically elected president Mel Zelaya was ousted, the number of murdered LGBTI people (90) is more than four times the number in the prior decade (20)"

Human Rights Blogger Describes Orweillian World

I am back to Bethlehem which is physically under Israeli occupation. But then again that is less significant than mental occupation from which so many people in Palestine and elsewhere seem to suffer. Perhaps if more of us free their minds of this mental occupation we can more easily rid ourselves of the physical occupation and colonization whether here or in America or the rest of the world. The following are just samples of the symptoms of this Orwellian world. -Israeli occupation forces demolish yet another Palestiniam village and the Western goverments remain silent. Meanwhile, the Palestinian authority continues to “negotiate” for the 21st year in a row and without legality (going back to the Palestinian people).

Stop Criminalizing Homelessness: International Boycott Of Palm Restaurant

On Saturday, October 19th, an international protest will take place at The Palm restaurant locations to raise awareness of this chain’s support of criminalization of homeless people. In 2012, Denver’s Palm restaurant manager Wendy Klein spoke on behalf of business groups in support of the Urban Camping Ban. The ban made it illegal for people in Denver to sleep with anything covering them, including a blanket, a jacket (if not worn), or a piece of cardboard. In early 2012 I was a nascent member of the Occupy movement here in Denver, Colorado. My frustration with giant banks crashing our economy and getting rewarded with bail-outs by the American taxpayer had led me to participating in Occupy Denver’s Foreclosure Working Group, now the Colorado Foreclosure Resistance Coalition.

Milk Cows, Not Workers

"Like all farmworkers, dairy workers are excluded from national labor law’s guarantees of collective bargaining rights and the right to overtime pay. And like many other farmworkers, a majority are undocumented. Under persistent threat of arrest and deportation, and lacking transportation, many rarely leave the confines of the farms, where they live and work under awful conditions. Besides isolation, they experience employer intimidation and wage theft."

Amnesty International: Italy Don’t Pardon CIA Agent Involved In Rendition

"The Italian President Giorgio Napolitano must reject a former CIA agent’s plea to be pardoned for a crime he committed in the country as part of the US-led rendition programme, Amnesty International said. Robert Seldon Lady – who is now believed to be back in the USA – wrote to the Italian leader on Wednesday to request a pardon. An Italian court previously convicted him in absentia, sentencing him to nine years in prison for his role in the abduction of Abu Omar from Milan in 2003[...]Torture and enforced disappearance are crimes under international law and all states are obliged to investigate and, if there is sufficient admissible evidence, prosecute those suspected of responsibility for such crimes."

The Chilean 9/11 – Justice For Victor Jara

"As a symbol of our solidarity with the Chilean people, we call on all activists to support the campaign, “Justice for Victor Jara.” The Chilean folksinger was the voice of his country's dispossessed, an internationally admired songwriter, and one of the founders of a new genre of Latin American song. He was killed on September 16, 1973, in the Estadio Chile. His body was dumped in the street, and found riddled with 44 bullets and signs of torture. In December 2012, Chilean Judge Miguel Vazquez Plaza charged former military officers Hugo Sanchez and Pedro Barrientos as responsible for the murder of Victor Jara.[...] Pedro Barrientos currently lives in Deltona, Florida."

Chomsky: Syria Descends Into Suicide, Israel & US Enjoy The Spectacle

"Well, Syria is descending into suicide. It’s a horror story and getting worse and worse. There’s no bright spot on the horizon[...]. Meanwhile, Israel is looking by and enjoying the spectacle. If you look at the New York Times this morning there’s a quote by an Israeli official essentially expressing their joy at watching Arabs slaughter each other[...]For the United States, that’s fine, they don’t want an outcome either."

George W. Bush Award Prompts Protest At University Of Denver

About 100 students and faculty at the University of Denver and others protested against a decision by the university's international school to give a global service award Monday to former President George W. Bush. Protesters demonstrated on a sidewalk outside a downtown hotel where Bush was being honored at a private fundraising dinner by The Josef Korbel School. Bush was being honored for his service as president and his efforts to fight HIV, cervical cancer and malaria in Africa. Opponents of the award presentation faulted the 43rd president for starting the war in Iraq and allowing the use of torture on prisoners. Kathy Joy, 63, a retired health teacher at Arapahoe Community College, said she didn't think the award should go to Bush because of the war, but also because he cut foreign aid for family planning in Africa.

Molly Crabapple: Inside A Guantanamo Bay Prison Tour

I first came to Gitmo to cover the military commissions. During my second trip, I was the third artist granted permission to draw the prisons. The Joint Task Force offers journalists a carefully choreographed tour—the point of which is to show that the Bad Old Gitmo of public perception is not Gitmo Now. Bad Old Gitmo existed from approximately 2002-2007. Its orange jumpsuits, water-boarding, detainees sleeping in what Granger, who served at Guantanamo in 2002, gleefully described as “dog kennels.” Its guards pummeling prisoners in revenge for September 11. Bad Old Gitmo, like so many icons of the Bush era, is Not Humane. And “humane” is the catchword of Gitmo now.
