Mexico: Chronicle Of A Coup Foretold

This article is meant to help identify warning signs and hopefully lower the number of American progressives who fall for the same psyops techniques that were used against Honduras, Paraguay, Brazil, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Bolivia during recent US-supported coups and coup attempts in those countries. Although this article is satire, I have inserted links to similar types of articles from progressive media outlets about Latin American countries that have suffered from recent US-backed regime change attempts. Based on what has happened recently to other Pink Tide governments in Latin America, I believe that so-called left voices in the anglo media might pave the way for the normalization of a coup attempt in Mexico...

Mexico’s President AMLO Is Delivering The Change He Promised

Mexico is in a period of profound change and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his Morena Party are charting a dramatically new path for the country. Jeremy Corbyn lost the election but one of his political friends, the progressive Mexican leader named Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has been in power for one year. He is carrying out the plans and priorities described in his 2018 book, “New Hope for Mexico.” With 129 million people, Mexico is the 10th most populous country in the world. It has the largest population of any Spanish speaking country and is twice the size of the United Kingdom.

A Juarez Refugee Christmas

As temperatures dip near or below freezing, scores of Mexican refugees huddle in their makeshift tents of layered plastic sheeting at the foot of the Santa Fe Bridge that connects Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, with El Paso, Texas. Many small children form part of the group. No colorfully wrapped packages wait below a Christmas tree. No heart warming lyrics from mariachi singers enliven the site, though a small figurine of the Virgin of Guadalupe watches over the people who wait and wait and wait for their chance to argue a case for political asylum in the United States.

AMLO And His Impact In Latin America

The arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the Presidency of Mexico had an important impact on the momentum of anti-neoliberal struggles in Latin America and the Caribbean. As the presidential elections approached and his candidacy grew, it was a cause of joy and hope in revolutionary and progressive circles in our America. Let’s remember some historic moments When the Mexican presidential election was held (7/2018), our region was suffering a major political regression towards the right and towards the hegemony of neoliberalism as a result of the temporary successes achieved by a runaway oligarchic imperialist offensive, which continues. The electoral defeat of the Argentine left in 2015 was followed in 2016 by the parliamentary-judicial-media coup against the president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, and the establishment of a US puppet government in that country, which marked a great turn to the right in the regional correlation of forces.

2019 Latin America In Review: Year Of The Revolt of the Dispossessed

A year ago, John Bolton, Trump’s short-lived national security advisor, invoked the 1823 Monroe Doctrine making explicit what has long been painfully implicit: the dominions south of the Rio Grande are the empire’s “backyard.” Yet 2019 was a year best characterized as the revolt of the dispossessed for a better world against the barbarism of neoliberalism. As Rafael Correa points out, Latin America today is in dispute. What follows is a briefing on this crossroads.

U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement—Weak Tea, At Best

The revised U.S.—Mexico—Canada Agreement (USMCA), announced today by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and endorsed by the AFL-CIO, represents a significant improvement on the draft agreement first released in 2017. Negotiators for labor and House Democrats strengthened the provisions on labor rights, environmental standards, and the enforcement of these rules, and also removed costly and egregious new protections for corporations, including giveaways by the Trump administration to pharmaceutical companies.

Mexico’s Govt Launches Massive Auction For ‘Robin Hood’ Program

Since taking office in December, Lopez Obrador, a leftist, has rolled out a string of welfare programs for the poor and the elderly, cut salaries for top civil servants. Mexico’s government announced on Wednesday an auction of 600 lots consisting in more than 4,000 seized jewels, vehicles and residences, officials said on Wednesday, as part of a “Robin Hood” program to use millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains to aid the poor. The announcement was made by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador at his morning press conference in the National Palace where Ricardo Rodriguez...

Mexico’s AMLO And His Impact On Latin America

The presidency of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) in Mexico has had a significant impact on boosting anti-neoliberal struggles in Latin America and the Caribbean. As the presidential election got closer and his nomination was stronger, revolutionary and progressive groups in Our America were filled with joy and hope. Let’s make a review. When the presidential election was held in Mexico (July 2018), our region was enduring a serious political regression towards the right and towards the neoliberalism’s hegemony as a result of temporary victories on behalf of an ongoing oligarchic imperialist offensive.

Mining Culture Wars Escalate In Oaxaca

Tourism is on the rise in the picturesque city of Oaxaca, known for its smoky mezcal, activist art scene, and diverse patchwork of Indigenous cultures. This year, visitors to the tiny airport in southern Mexico—where traffic is up 34 percent—were greeted by a billboard depicting smiling miners in a verdant field. “Welcome to Oaxaca,” the sign read, “where progress and nature coexist. Cuzcatlán Mining Company.” Cuzcatlán is the wholly-owned subsidiary of Fortuna Silver Mines, a Vancouver-based company that operates a gold and silver mine an hour south of the airport.

Another U.S. Regime Change Operation Is Taking Shape In Mexico

When it comes to Mexico, one can at this point easily spot the signs of a brewing U.S. regime change operation. Since Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador was elected last year, he’s been thoroughly vilified by the U.S. media. After Brazil’s fascist president Jair Bolsonaro was elected, the Financial Times’ John Paul Rathbone even argued that Obrador is a greater threat to liberal democracy than Bolsonaro. Such views of Obrador have come from claims that he’s an authoritarian, or “too strong” as the Washington Post recently put it.

Mexico: One Failed Drug War Does Not Justify Another

Donald Trump called upon “Mexico, with the help of the United States, to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth.  We merely await a call from your great new president!” Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador just as promptly rejected Trump’s proposal.  That’s not surprising. He ran for president on a platform that includes ending, not escalating, Mexico’s status as a battlefield in the decades-long US “war on drugs,” a war that created, and continues to empower, the cartels.

Trump Calls For US Troops To Wage “War” On Drug Cartels In Mexico

Donald Trump threatened to deploy US soldiers to Mexico yesterday in the aftermath of a gang-related attack that left nine dual US-Mexico citizens dead in the northern state of Chihuahua. Six children from a Mormon family were among those ambushed and killed on Monday in an apparent case of mistaken identity. “This is the time for Mexico, with the help of the United States, to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth. We merely await a call from your great new president!” Trump tweeted, referring to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

Pink Tide Against US Domination Rising Again In Latin America

Once again, the left is rising in Latin America as people revolt against authoritarian regimes, many of whom were put in place by US-supported coups. These regimes have taken International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans and are under the thumb of international finance, which is against the interests of people. After the embattled President of Ecuador claimed that President Nicolas Maduro was the cause of the massive protests against him, Maduro made clear what was occurring in Latin America, saying: “We have two models: the IMF model which privatizes everything and takes away the people’s rights to health, education and work; and the humanist-progressive model which is emerging in Latin America and has the Bolivarian Revolution at the forefront.”

The Demise Of U.S. Hegemony: Analysis Of A Revolutionary Heat Wave In Haiti, West Papua, Mexico And Beyond

A massive revolutionary heat wave has swept the globe this summer, as militants have risen up with the intent to overthrow their colonial and imperialist foes. In the face of gruesome and relentless State repression, the people are nevertheless holding and gaining ground. From West Papua to Mexico, from Haiti to Colombia, from Honduras to Sudan and beyond, those who have long suffered the violence and indignities of occupation are declaring, unequivocally, that they have had enough.

On Fifth Anniversary Of Mexico’s Missing 43 Students, Anguished Families Still Seek Answers

When Antonio Tizapa’s 20-year-old son Jorge disappeared with 42 other teacher’s college students in Iguala, Mexico, he did not think that they would still be missing five years later. “We still don’t know what happened. We are overwhelmed, stuck,” Tizapa told NBC News in New York, where he lives. “And after five years of demanding justice, five years fighting to keep the case open, it’s unreal that we still can’t find them.” The Mexican government initially concluded that 43 students from a teacher's college in Ayotzinapa were arrested by local authorities in southwest Mexico on Sept. 26, 2014, and turned over to drug traffickers who then murdered and incinerated them at a garbage dump.
