7 Palestinians, Including 2 Children, Killed In Gaza Protests

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Seven Palestinians, including two children, were shot and killed by Israeli forces during protests across the eastern borders of the besieged Gaza Strip, on Friday afternoon. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that 7 Palestinians were killed identifying them as 14-year-old boy Muhammad Nayif al-Hum, killed by a live bullet in the chest in the al-Breij refugee camp, Iyad al-Shaer, 18, and Muhammad Walid Haniyeh, 23, from the al-Shate refugee camp, Muhammad Bassam Shakhsa, 25, all residents of Gaza City.The ministry identified the remaining 3 as 12-year-old Nasser Azmi Musbeh, and Muhammad Ali Anshashi, 18, both shot and killed in eastern Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, in addition to Muhammad Ashraf al-Awawdeh, 26, who was pronounced dead at the al-Shifa Hospital after sustaining critical injuries at eastern al-Breij refugee camp.

Algiers, the nation’s capital, became a center of hope and political organizing for revolutions brewing in Africa, Latin America, Asia – and in the US for revolutionary groups like the Black Panther Party. Elaine Mokhtefi remembers Algiers. Mokhtefi, author of the new book Algiers, Third World Capital: Freedom Fighters, Revolutionaries, Black Panthers, is an American woman born in 1928 to working-class Jewish parents. In the 1950s and ’60s, Mokhtefi was one of the many thousands who supported the Algerian struggle for national liberation.

Current climate change thinking argues that the world has to use energy at least 3% more productively each year in order to stay below 2 degrees. Amory Lovins argues that the world’s ability to sustain such rapid savings (slightly above the 2015 peak of 2.8%/y) is far greater—and can prove even more profitable—than had been thought. In the paper, titled “How Big Is the Energy Efficiency Resource?”, Lovins shows that the potential for energy efficiency has been massively understated and its cost overstated...

A million people crying for independence, demanding the release of political prisoners and the return of exiles should be an image that should be traveling around the world to show that the Catalan people are determined to exercise the right to self-determination and build the Republic of Catalonia. However, the Spanish hegemonic press has tried to hide the sky with a finger. The media has also tried to minimize what has become a powerful message of dignity of a people who are fed up with enduring the chains and the Spanish plundering of their economy, but also the cultural penetration that among other things wants to destroy its upmost sign of identity;  the Catalan language.

Freedom Flotilla Missions Will Continue ‘Until Palestine Is Free’

In August, the crew and passengers of the Freedom Flotilla ships, Al Awda and Freedom, returned to their home countries after being hijacked, interrogated and imprisoned by Israeli commandos. The outcome may have appeared anticlimactic, since many supporters had hoped for a triumphant arrival by the flotilla ships in Gaza Harbor and a  breaking of Israel’s illegal 12-year land and sea blockade of the small Palestinian enclave. But in many ways, the 2018 Freedom Flotilla mission has achieved its goals—which were to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza, raise public awareness of the blockade and other human rights violations, and let the people of Gaza know that they are not alone. Of course, had the flotilla ships been able to reach Gaza unhindered, it would have been a remarkable accomplishment and the first time the blockade had been breached in 10 years.  

2 NFL Players Kneel For Anthem, Kaepernick Tweets His Thanks

DENVER—No longer welcome on an NFL sideline, Colin Kaepernick turned to social media to make his point on the NFL’s opening Sunday. In a tweet, Kaepernick gave a shout-out to “my brothers,” Miami Dolphins teammates Kenny Stills and Albert Watson, who were the only two players in the league to take a knee during the national anthem during Sunday’s early games. “They have not backed down, even when attacked and intimidated,” Kaepernick said in the tweet, which was accompanied by a picture of the Dolphins kneeling before their game. “Love is at the root of our resistance.” It was Kaepernick, then with the 49ers, who sparked the anthem controversy by kneeling during the pregame ritual in 2016—his way of protesting policy brutality and social injustice in America.

The national controversy over those who choose to protest racial injustice in America by placing one knee on the ground during the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner doesn’t seem to be going away. The NFL announced a policy last May that any players who protest the anthem while on the field will be subject to discipline from the league. Here in Carbondale, Illinois, where I reside, Southern Illinois University — or, as I like to call it, Self-Impaling University — impaled itself once again by announcing a policy forbidding student athletes, cheerleaders and spirit members from engaging in “displays of activism” while in uniform. Thankfully, after a public outcry, the university quickly reversed itself. Last year, when three black cheerleaders at SIU bravely took a knee before an SIU football game, they were subjected to a sickening barrage of racist vitriol, including death threats, sexual assault threats, and being called the N-word.

UN Chief Suggests Deploying Armed Forces To Protect Palestinians From Israel

“The combination of prolonged military occupation, constant security threats, weak political institutions, and a deadlocked peace process provides for a protection challenge that is highly complex politically, legally and practically.” The protection of Palestinian civilians could be improved by the deployment of UN-mandated armed forces or unarmed observers, a beefed-up UN civilian presence or expanded UN assistance, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote in a report on Friday. The United Nations General Assembly requested the report in a resolution adopted in June that condemned Israel for excessive force against Palestinian civilians and denounced the firing of rockets from Gaza into Israeli civilian areas. The resolution asked for proposals to ensure “the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation, including … recommendations regarding an international protection mechanism.

NAFTA Renegotiation Should Reject Neoliberalism and Economic Nationalism

A deal between the US and Mexico on a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may be announced any day now, marking the first revision of the deal since its signing. A product of the neoliberal “Washington Consensus,” the pact between the US, Canada and Mexico went into effect in 1994 and became a model for many trade agreements that followed. NAFTA has long been in the crosshairs of unions, progressive campaigners, leftists, environmental groups and consumer advocates for its pro-corporate, anti-regulatory policies and outsourcing incentives. Indeed, NAFTA was made systematically more damaging by every administration since its signing. But before the ink was dry, on January 1, 1994, the Zapatista guerrilla movement rose in southern Mexico and signaled the start of an anti-NAFTA battle that shook the world.

The twelfth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) reports that the global level of peace deteriorated by 0.27 per cent last year. Europe and United States, the world’s most peaceful regions, recorded a decline in peacefulness for the third straight year. This is not merely a one-year decline. Rather, it’s part of a decade-long trend: global peacefulness has deteriorated by 2.38 per cent since 2008. The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a non-partisan think tank headquartered in Sydney, has been publishing yearly editions of GPI for the last 13 years. Covering 99.7 per cent of the world population, the index ranks 163 independent states and territories in three domains – safety and security in the society, involvement in ongoing conflicts, and militarization – according to 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators.

Israeli Authorities Still Feel The Sting From Ahed Tamimi’s Slap

NABI SALEH, PALESTINE  — “All Palestine’s Children are Ahed Tamimi,” Nariman Tamimi said in an interview after the much-publicized mother and daughter were released from an Israeli prison on July 29. Ahed Tamimi’s mother said this in response to the tremendous amount of coverage that her daughter’s arrest and subsequent release received. Nariman said that, unlike with the arrests of other Palestinian children, Ahed received so much support and attention from the West perhaps because “she looks like their children.” She also did not hide the fact that she thought there was an element of racism in the support for Ahed, who has a distinct “European” look — whereas there are so many thousands of stories just like hers, of children who face the occupation each day, and the world takes no interest in their stories.

The movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel – known as BDS – has been driving the world a little bit mad. Since its founding 13 years ago, it has acquired nearly as many enemies as the Israelis and Palestinians combined. It has hindered the efforts of Arab states to fully break their own decades-old boycott in pursuit of increasingly overt cooperation with Israel. It has shamed the Palestinian Authority government in Ramallah by denouncing its security and economic collaboration with Israel’s army and military administration. It has annoyed the Palestine Liberation Organization by encroaching on its position as the internationally recognised advocate and representative of Palestinians worldwide.

‘Resist Apartheid:’ Thousands Rally Against Israel’s Nationality Bill

Thousands rallied in Tel Aviv, Israel's capital, to reject the controversial Nationality Bill, approved by the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, in July. The march was led by Palestinian Israelis who make up around 20 percent of Israel's population. The protest included the left-wing political party Meretz, legislator of the Zionist Union Micky Rosenthal, rights organizations such as Peace Now and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, and the members of the Joint List - a political alliance of four Arab-dominated parties in Israel. Chairman of the Joint List, Ayman Odeh, said: "Tens of thousands of Arabs and Jews are moving in large quantities on buses to Tel Aviv because today we insist on delivering a clear message - a democratic state must be for all citizens."

Dare To Dream Of A World Without Borders

Imagine that Martin Luther King never had a dream. Imagine that instead of working outside the narrow confines of time and place, he had resolved to work only within them. Imagine he had risen to the steps of the Lincoln Monument and announced a five-point plan that he imagined he could both sell to the black community and win a majority for in both houses of congress that would bring civil rights legislation that one step closer. But he didn’t. He chose not to engage in the nitty gritty of the here and now. Instead, he addressed not what will be or could be, but what should be. And it is in that spirit and tradition that I want to make this contribution now. I am fully aware that no nation is going to get rid of its border tomorrow.

Ten Years In Palestine, Lessons Learned

It has been ten years since I returned to Palestine after living in the US for nearly three decades. Those ten years in Palestine have been truly phenomenal and inspirational despite the pain and agony associated with them. For example, they are bracketed by an attack on Gaza in 2008 when we saw hundreds of Palestinian civilians murdered and by the attacks on Gaza and on the freedom flotilla trying to break the siege on Gaza in 2018. In between much pain that I relayed in my weekly email messages including losing 19 of my personal friends killed by the Israeli colonization army. But also in between we have much to be proud of in Palestinian community achievement with help of others.
