Wells Fargo Announces Ban On Financing Arctic Oil And Gas Drilling

The world’s top bank to finance fracked oil and gas will no longer fund for oil and gas projects in the Arctic. Wells Fargo recently updated its environment policy to prohibit Arctic drilling and now joins Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase along with several other global banks. The bank supports the “principles of the Paris Agreement” and believes that “policy action is essential to make meaningful progress against the Agreement’s goal,” therefore will “forego participation in any project-specific transaction in the region,” including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the policy stated. “Wells Fargo’s decision to rule out funding for Arctic drilling is clear evidence that investing in the destruction of the Arctic Refuge would be toxic to any company involved,” Ben Cushing, Sierra Club campaign representative, said.

Kanesatake — Brigitte Rice had been on her feet for 24 hours by Tuesday morning, hoisting the Warrior flag in one hand and using the other to slow traffic into Mohawk territory. She came to the blockade Monday to “hold it down” for the protesters arrested for stopping rail traffic in Tyendinaga that morning. Hours after the raid, Rice was among the dozens of Mohawks on the front lines in Kanesatake, sealing off access to the reserve to show solidarity with her sister community. They lifted the blockade early Tuesday and are allowing a single lane of traffic to pass through the reserve along Route 344. “My son asked me if he would have to do this when he grows up. It hit me hard,” Rice said. “I really hope he doesn’t have to. I was watching live when the RCMP moved into the Wet’suwet’en camp. I started crying. It really hurt me.

Portland, OR — CLDC attorneys Lauren Regan and Cooper Brinson, joined by co-counsel and Portland attorney Kenneth Kreuscher, are pleased that a Portland jury was unable to find their clients, a group of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Portland activists, guilty. Regan, Brinson, and Kreuscher used the affirmative defense known as the “necessity” or “choice of evils” defense. The defendants were not convicted of trespassing in the first degree—charges that resulted from their role in an April 28, 2019 action intended to halt Zenith Energy’s, a Texas corporation, (“Zenith’s”) essential role in the global facilitation and transport of fossil fuels, specifically, tar sands oil—one of the world’s most egregious source of carbon emissions and climate change.

Washington, DC - On February 20, members of the climate justice group Beyond Extreme Energy held a sit-in inside the offices of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Seven activists disrupted FERC’s monthly commissioner's meeting, calling for FERC to be replaced with the ‘Federal Renewable Energy Commission’ (FREC). An additional five BXE members sat down blocking a staircase, before being forcibly removed. Members of the group sang and unfurled banners reading “FERC Permits Climate Crimes” and “FREC sustains communities and the earth.” They sat peacefully in the FERC headquarters until forcibly removed by building security. BXE member Jerome Wagner said the action was necessary because, “Under the Trump administration, FERC has become even more rogue, brazenly prioritizing fossil fuels over renewables and continuing to serve as a rubber stamp for natural gas infrastructure expansion.”

Canada - On the morning of February 8, 2020, RCMP officers landed at the gates of Unist'ot'en Village by helicopter. Unist'ot'en chiefs and house members began calling on their ancestors for support. They held a cremation ceremony for Canadian/Indigenous reconciliation, and burned a copy of the injunction that the RCMP was there to serve on behalf of Coastal GasLink (TC Energy). After about 30 minutes, the RCMP got back into their helicopters and left. Eleven people including legal observers were arrested today at the camp at 27 kilometer on bogus charges. The 4 people arrested at 27 km yesterday are being held in jail until they appear before a judge in Smithers on Monday In response rail lines, ports, and roads are being shut down across Canada with people vowing to stay until the RCMP stand down!

Salem, OR - Amidst enormous public opposition and just one week before the Department of State Lands (DSL) was set to make a decision on a critical Removal-Fill permit on the Jordan Cove LNG export terminal and Pacific Connector fracked gas pipeline, Pembina has withdrawn their application to the agency. On Tuesday, DSL issued a rejection of a request for Pembina to extend the agencies timeline, noting the Canadian fossil fuel corporation had still not provided adequate information after multiple extensions. “It is outrageous that Pembina has withdrawn their application just a few days before the Department of State Lands was set to make a decision,” said Mike Graybill, Former Manager of the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and resident of Coos County.

On February 15, 2018, a fracked natural gas well owned by ExxonMobil's XTO Energy and located in southeast Ohio experienced a well blowout, causing it to gush the potent greenhouse gas methane for nearly three weeks. The obscure accident ultimately resulted in one of the biggest methane leaks in U.S. history. The New York Times reported in December that new satellite data revealed that this single gas well leaked more methane in 20 days than an entire year's worth of methane released by the oil and gas industries in countries like Norway and France.

In over their heads with debt, U.S. shale oil and gas firms are now moving from a boom in fracking to a boom in bankruptcies. This trend of failing finances has the potential for the U.S. public, both at the state and federal levels, to be left on the hook for paying to properly shut down and clean up even more drilling sites. Expect these companies to try reducing their debt through the process of bankruptcy and, like the coal industry, attempting to get out of environmental and employee-related financial obligations. In October, EP Energy — one of the largest oil producers in the Eagle Ford Shale region in Texas — filed for bankruptcy because the firm couldn't pay back almost $5 billion in debt, making it the largest oil and gas bankruptcy since 2016.

Law Enforcement Crushing Pipeline Dissent In Minnesota

Police in Clearbrook, Minnesota were accused of putting the "profits of oil companies before human life" after activists said law enforcement on Monday began sawing the leg of a tripod from which a tar sands protester was suspended. An estimated 30 protesters blockaded the entrance to Enbrige's Clearbrook Terminal in a display of ongoing opposition to the oil company's proposed Line 3 project, which would bring tar sands from Alberta to a Wisconsin shipping hub, passing through Minnesota. Several activists held a large banner across the road to the entrance reading "Stop Line 3. Protect the Sacred." They stood in front of 21-year-old Sara-Beth Anderson, who was suspended from the tripod. The ResistLine3 Twitter account shared photos and details about the action on social media, including that police began to saw one of the tripod legs, prompting Anderson to come down on her own to avoid bodily harm.

RCMP Arrest Unist’ot’en Supporter

One Unist’ot’en supporter was arrested this morning at approximately 9:45am for enforcing provisions of a temporary access agreement with Coastal GasLink. The Access Protocol Agreement between CGL and Unist’ot’en/Dark House states that the corporation or its contractors will provide at least 24 hours of advanced notice for any attempted entrances. This access agreement was created in an attempt to secure information on who is accessing the territory, and to protect the safety of, and prevent arrest of, Unist'ot'en house members and supporters while the interlocutory injunction hearing is settled in the Supreme Court. Our supporter was unlawfully arrested for enforcing this agreement, while CGL's contractor violated the protocol and attempted to enter without adequate notice. Today the RCMP have arrested the person complying with the injunction and not those breaking it.

Appeals Court Orders Stay Of Mountain Valley Pipeline Permit

Virginia - Already slowed by the loss of two permits and a lawsuit that challenges a third one, construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline hit another major roadblock Friday. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a stay to a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, pending its review of lawsuit brought by environmental groups headed by the Sierra Club. Following the late afternoon stay, the club said it “effectively means construction must stop” on the 303-mile pipeline. Mountain Valley suspended new construction on some stretches of the pipeline in August, three days after the lawsuit claimed that an approval from the Fish and Wildlife Service failed to adequately protect endangered species in the project’s path. Attorneys for the Sierra Club, which filed the challenge on behalf of seven groups, argued that the voluntary suspension did not go far enough.

Hundreds Rally In Opposition To Line 3 Tar Sands Pipeline

The rally comes at the end of a week of protests across planet Earth designed to bring attention to the ongoing mass extinction event tied to human-accelerated climate change. Protests and actions have been continuous against the tar sands Line 3 pipeline as indigenous groups and allies defend native treaty rights and cultural resources. The actions have included lock-downs across the state, and a constant legal battle in the courts. Although recently the Enbridge Line 3 tar sands pipeline has been denied a necessary water crossing permit, it is uncertain how this most recent decision will affect Enbridge’s timeline. The company already has pipe materials stored in northern Minnesota, and seems to be operating under the assumption that it will have the permits by the end of 2019 and be able to enter service by the latter half of 2020.
