Pressure On Netanyahu Mounts As Israel Bombs Gaza Again

Embattled Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been facing pressure at home and abroad amid his government’s continued bombing of the Gaza strip. With protests in both Jerusalem and the UK, Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has continued. And the Israeli PM is refusing to back down on all fronts. The PA news agency reported that on Saturday 22 August, thousands of protesters marched on Netanyahu’s residence in central Jerusalem. They were protesting over his continued tenure as prime minister. The demonstrations came amid a backdrop of a summer of protests, centered around Netanyahu’s government’s handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. But people are also angry about him continuing to hold office while on trial over corruption charges. Israel is facing the prospect of a fourth round of elections in the space of just over a year. This is because its ruling coalition government, so far, has been deadlocked about its forthcoming budget. The Israeli bombing campaign is compounding an already fragile situation in Gaza.

Global South Calls For Sanctions On Apartheid Israel

Israel’s decades-old regime of apartheid and theft of Palestinian land is continuing unabated. Reports that Israel is “suspending” formal annexation are a smokescreen for continued colonisation and piecemeal ethnic cleansing of Indigenous Palestinians.  Around the world, advocates for justice are pushing back. The Global South response, initiated by South African civil society, brings together notable figures, intellectuals, policy makers, civil society leaders and experts from Africa, Latin America and Asia, in a joint effort to promote lawful sanctions on Israel to end its decades-old oppression of the Palestinian people.

Palestinian Community Sets Conditions On Support For Presidential Candidate

Members of the Palestinian community in the United States have issued a declaration of principles that included a set of preconditions to support federal candidates in the presidential elections later this year. The document, signed by Palestinian cultural, political, social and academic figures, included 13 preconditions namely recognizing the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination as an inalienable right as well as the need for the Israeli occupation to immediately and unconditionally end and the refugees’ right to return to their homes in accordance with UN Resolution 194. The Declaration considered the activities carried out by the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement as a legitimate right in full harmony with the First Amendment of the American Constitution.

A Century Of Complicity

The US was never an honest broker in negotiations but a behind-the-scenes lawyer for Israel, bound in part by a pledge dating from the Gerald Ford administration to never float a peace proposal without first seeking approval from Israeli negotiators. This theme of US complicity in Palestinian oppression carries over into The Hundred Years’ War and is deepened with an account of the US role in Lebanon when American officials promised to ensure the safety of Palestinian refugees following the departure of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Those same officials reneged on the pledge as Israel oversaw the Phalangist massacres at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Khalidi concludes that US administrations have colluded with Israel ever since the 1967 War, which Washington green-lighted. The US continues to provide both the military aid and the diplomatic cover essential to preserving Israel as an apartheid, settler-colonial state.

US Killer Cops Mastered ‘Fascist Israel’s Technique Proudly Used On Palestinians’

“Thank goodness there’s an uprising,” Waters told RT’s ‘Going Underground’ on Tuesday, referring to the wave of protests and riots sweeping the US since the killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis last month. “It’s about time.” The kneeling chokehold that killed Floyd was described by Waters as “an Israeli technique, proudly developed by the IDF in the occupied territories in Palestine.” An Israeli national police spokesman recently denied that his country’s police force uses such a measure on suspects, and added that Israeli counterterrorism officers never taught the move to American police officers in any joint training sessions. However, US police departments do regularly send officers to Israel for training, and such sessions are also held on US soil.

Reparations And The Palestinian Right Of Return

The calls “Black Lives Matter” and “Free, Free Palestine,” serve to remind us that Palestine is not free and that if the lives of Black people mattered, there would be no need for the call. In both cases, people are in the grips of a cruel, racist system that refuses to let go. In both cases, people are being hunted down, caged, strangled, and shot to death, and the root cause of their suffering is rarely addressed. In Palestine, the return of refugees is the issue that has the capacity to completely alter the conversation and ultimately bring justice to Palestinians. However few are willing to bring it up, much less to discuss it seriously. In America, the issue of reparations to descendants of slaves is arguably the issue that will force an honest conversation and provide some semblance of justice to Black Americans, and yet it too is rarely discussed in public forums.

Athletes Take A Knee Against Israel’s Occupation

In August of 2016, quarterback Colin Kaepernick began his NFL season by kneeling during the national anthem in protest of racism and state violence. He purposefully chose the space of the anthem to raise the issue of the gap between what this nation promises and what it delivers. It was a powerful, iconic act that inspired athletes from a variety of sports to do the same. From the pros to college, to high school, to even middle school, athletes were inspired to take a knee less to lend their solidarity to Kaepernick than to protest racist police killings where they lived. In the tradition—and the extension—of this movement, two volleyball players from Brooklyn College went to one knee before a game this week against Yeshiva University.

The Systematic Torture Of Palestinians In Israeli Detention

Since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) has been systematically torturing Palestinians using a variety of techniques. The international legal regime prohibits torture through customary international law as well as a variety of international and regional treaties. While Israel ratified the Convention against Torture (CAT) in 1991, it has failed to incorporate it into its domestic legislation. Moreover, despite the UN committee’s affirmation to the contrary, Israel claims that CAT does not apply to the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This allows Israel to assert that there is no crime of torture in Israel...

Israel Commemorates The Assassination of Rabin With Another Massacre In Gaza

My short visit to Palestine in early November began around the time of the commemoration of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, went through the assassination by Israel of Islamic Jihad leader, Bahaa Abu Al-Atta and his wife in Gaza, and ended as Prime Minister Netanyahu, who should be indicted for his countless crimes against the Palestinian people, was indicted for low grade corruption (valued at about $200,000), pulling strings and lying. And as always, Palestinians continue to bury their dead as Israelis bury their heads in the sand.

The Lobby: Daring Undercover Film Exposes Shadowy Deceptions by Pro-Zionists In US

The Lobby is a documentary produced by Al Jazeera which shines daylight on the quasi-illegal practices of Israelis and their Jewish-American partners to undermine the First Amendment rights of advocates of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. The Lobby documents an arsenal of unethical tactics employed by the pro-Israel forces that are deeply antithetical to the American democratic process. The deceitful tactics are revealed through the very words of the pro-Israeli participants themselves as a result of a hidden camera wielded by a British Jew who infiltrated their conferences, programs, and one-on-one meetings.

Trump’s Funding Cuts Part Of New Formula To Erase Most Palestinians

U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to severely cut funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is another step in what seems to be an attempt by the U.S. and Israel to erase the Palestinian refugee issue. Festering for seven decades, the Palestinian refugee crisis has been an open wound affecting Palestine and the countries around it, and now Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claim they have found a solution: deny the existence of the refugees.

Sign On: Tell The International Criminal Court To Investigate Israel’s Crimes

Since the Nakba in 1947, Israel has displaced, brutalized and murdered Palestinians. The United States is Israel's biggest supporter and regularly provides cover for the crimes committed by Israel. For these reasons, residents of the United States have a responsibility to demand that Israel is held accountable for its war crimes. To that end, a letter is being circulated for individuals, political parties and organizations to sign calling on the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel for its crimes against Palestinians.

Legalizing The Nakba: Israeli Land And Planning Law Regime

The origins of the modern Israeli land and planning law regimes can be traced back to 1901, the year in which the Jewish National Fund (JNF) was established. The JNF, which, as will be seen, still plays a dominant role in the Israeli land law regime, was originally founded for the purpose of acquiring land in Palestine. According to the memorandum of association of the English company into which the Fund was first incorporated, its object is to acquire land in Palestine “for the purpose of settling Jews on such lands.” The same memorandum of association also prohibits the JNF from selling any land it acquired. JNF land could be leased but only “to any Jews upon any term.” Leading figures in the early years of the Zionist movement had high ambitions for the JNF. Indeed a resolution was passed at the Seventh Zionist Congress rejecting “unplanned, unsystematic and philanthropic small-scale colonization” of Palestine.

Palestinians End Mass Hunger Strike In Israel jails

By Hossam Ezzedine for AFP. Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails on hunger strike since April 17 have ended their mass protest after Israel agreed a deal following weeks of refusing to negotiate, sources on both sides said on Saturday. Some 30 of the more than 800 hunger strikers had been hospitalised in recent days, raising fears of an escalation of clashes with Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank. Palestinians hailed the deal as a victory for the hunger strikers after Israeli authorities repeatedly vowed not to negotiate with convicted "terrorists". Palestinian Authority prisoners' affair chief Issa Qaraqe said it had come after some 20 hours of talks between Israeli officials and strike leader Marwan Barghouti, a figure revered among Palestinians but reviled by many Israelis. An Israel Prisons Service spokeswoman confirmed the hunger strike was over but said the deal had been reached not with prisoners' representatives but with the Palestinian Authority and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Palestine: Prisoners Will Have To Extend The Hunger Strike

By Ramón Pedregal Casanova for The Dawn. One of the leaders of the hunger strike of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, Samer al Issawi, who made a 9-month long hunger strike, from 2012 and 2013, forcing his captors to comply with his demands and free him, even though he was detained again six months later and sentenced to 20 years of jail. I bring here the words of Samer’s mother, who stated: “I visited my son at the beginning of the hunger strike. The doctors who treated him after his last hunger strike almost two years ago told him that his life might be in danger if he takes part in another hunger strike due to the irreversible damage the first one caused to his organs. My son, after listening to me, said: ‘Mother, you believe in God and in his will. God gives us life and takes it away from us. God is one and death is one as well. Trust Him, I am going to join the strike along my comrades. I want your blessing and forgiveness for causing so much pain to you’.
