Victory And Celebration In Gaza

A senior Hamas official said that a peace deal had been reached with Israel to end the latest conflict in the coastal enclave that has killed more than 2,000 people. The official said the deal calls for an "open-ended" ceasefire and an Israeli agreement to ease its blockade of Gaza to allow aid supplies and construction materials into the war-battered territory. Talks on long-running issues, including Hamas' demand to reopen Gaza's airport and sea port, and its desired release of prisoners in the West bank, would begin in a month. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli Government. If the terms of a peace deal proposed by Egypt are agreed, it would effectively mean Hamas settled for similar conditions that ended a week of clashes Israel in 2012.

Israelis And Palestinians Join Forces In Inspiring New Campaign

As the media continues to bombard us with horrifying images of violence and hate emanating from the Middle East, it can be difficult to remain hopeful that any long-lasting solution to end the conflict will ever be reached in that region of the world. Yet, an unlikely alliance of ex-militant Israelis and Palestinians have set out to challenge that notion of despair by joining hands and launching an inspiring peace campaign offering an alternative solution to the ongoing political stalemate. Tired of waiting for their governments to stop the cycle of violence, the bi-national movement Combatants For Peace, have instead chosen to lay down their weapons and work collaboratively to raise funds to build peace in the middle peace. Formed in 2005 from former IDF Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters who had taken an active part in the cycle of violence, the group hopes to generate enough support so it can put political pressure on both governments to intervene and work toward reconciliation. The primary goal is to promote the end of the occupation and the creation of a Palestinian state where both populations can live side by side in peace and dignity by educating each side about non-violent struggles in both Israel and Palestine.

Police Need To Be Remade as ‘Peace Officers’

The Ferguson Police Department, reportedly nearly all white (50 of 53 officers), patrols a St. Louis suburban community that is 70 percent African-American, a situation that is already a recipe for disaster in a nation that is drenched in racism--and all too typical in communities across the country. The Ferguson PD has also been reportedly employing the kind of aggressive policing -- arresting people over minor infractions -- that can quickly escalate into violent confrontations. In this case, it appears Brown’s offense was jay-walking and perhaps talking back to the police officer -- the first being a citation offense, and the second not even illegal. When this shooting happened, instead of immediately attempting to calm things down, the Ferguson Police Department went all paramilitary, sending massive numbers of up-armed cops in military gear, backed by police dogs, into the community.

Ten Thousand In Tel Aviv Demonstrate For Peace

Some 10,000 Israelis flooded Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square under the slogan “Changing direction: toward peace, away from war” in the largest anti-Gaza war demonstration in Israel since the outbreak of hostilities more than one month ago. The protest was scheduled to take place last week, but was postponed after the police and Home Front Command revoked its permit, ostensibly to stop large gatherings during a time when missiles were being fired at Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities. Roughly 500 non-aligned activists flooded Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square anyway, in defiance of the ban. The major left-wing parties, including Meretz and Hadash, as well as Peace Now and other left-wing organizations, joined tonight’s demonstration, calling for a wide range of demands, from continuing negotiations between Israel and Hamas to an end to the occupation and Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Highway Patrol Captain Marches With Protesters

On Thursday afternoon Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain and 27 year veteran of the force, Ronald S. Johnson, was announced to be taking over security decisions in the outraged city of Ferguson. Local law enforcement intends to stay involved, but highway patrol is now directly on the ground. During the press conference held by Governor Nixon, Johnson stated, “We are going to have a different approach and have the approach that we’re in this together”, and so far, he wasn’t lying. Responding To The Crisis In Iraq — Without Bombs

President Obama used a powerful term when he authorized airstrikes in Iraq. He said that these strikes were necessary to help the Iraqi military "prevent a potential act of genocide" against the Yazidi people, thousands of whom were trapped on a mountain in northern Iraq without food or water. We agree with President Obama that the U.S. and the international community must act to prevent the mass killing of civilians. When we respond to the threat of violence with more violence, however, we strengthen rather than undermine the extremist groups that are perpetuating the crisis. The United States and others in the international community must support non-military, civilian-led approaches so that Iraqis can live in peace and stability. When we respond to violence with violence, we strengthen the extremist groups perpetuating the crisis. The question of how to respond when civilians are in danger challenges us all. In the days since the strikes began, we've heard from many of you who see airstrikes as the only effective choice to save these lives. It is true that U.S. airstrikes have yielded what seem to be dramatic and immediate results. While many people remain trapped on the mountain, Islamic State forces have retreated, allowing more to be rescued.

Peace Activists Roll Out Enormous Pink Scarves

Protesters (Wool Against Weapons, Action AWE) have unveiled a seven-mile “peace scarf” as part of a protest in Berkshire against replacing the UK’s Trident nuclear weapons system. The scarf, which took thousands of hours to knit, was stretched from the Atomic Weapons Establishments in Aldermaston to Burghfield. It was created from hundreds of pieces of knitting made across the world and took about five hours to assemble. Campaigners have spent the past eight months making the scarf. Police closed several roads for about five minutes at 13:00 BST, to enable all of the pieces of material to be connected for the whole seven-mile distance. The sites in Aldermaston and Burghfield provide the warheads for the submarine-launched missile system. Symon Hill, from Action AWE, said: “It’s a creative way of making a point that is shared by millions of people around the world, which is concern about the impact of nuclear weapons if they’re used. “It costs £100bn to renew Trident at a time when we are experiencing cuts to public services and the welfare state that we need.” The scarf was assembled by hundreds of people on the morning of the protest using ribbons and safety pins.

Thousands Gather In Tel Aviv To Protest Attack

Nearly 3,000 people gathered at Tel Aviv's Rabin Square on Saturday evening to protest against Israel's military offensive in Gaza which is now in its nineteenth day. In another part of the city square, a counter protest was organized by right wing demonstrators. There was a large police presence at the rally, including mounted police, who were separating the two sides. Border Police units deployed to the area kept the right wing protestors behind barricades to prevent confrontation. Police cleared protestors from blocking area streets and arrested five right-wing counter protestors. During the protest, rocket attacks from Gaza resumed, as sirens were heard in southern and central Israel. The police ordered that the crowds end their protests because of the renewed rocket barrages. This week's events come just a week after Tel Aviv's Habima Square saw hundreds of protestors rallying for and against Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip. The July 19th protest turned violent when right-wing activists hurled eggs and water bottles at those calling for Israel to get out of Gaza.

Erase memories of atrocities and you tempt future perpetrators with immunity—Miraslov Volf In recent weeks, as Israeli bombs and artillery have slammed into the tiny strip of land that is home to nearly 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, the propaganda war has been raging with equal vigor. Israeli spokespersons have consistently denied any blame for civilian victims and even claimed that civilians are acting as human shields for Hamas operations, blaming the victims of this humanitarian catastrophe for their own suffering. While it will take time and independent investigation to determine if the Israeli Defense Forces’ claims that Hamas is using civilians as human shields turn out to be as baseless as past IDF human shielding allegations against Hamas and Hezbollah, other claims made by Israel supporters can be easily dispelled now. Pro-Israel politicians and pundits have rewritten the history of the demise of an agricultural project in the Gaza Strip to blame the victims of an economic tragedy for their own hopeless situation. During the past few weeks, several pro-Israel political pundits including Ezra Levant, Charles Krauthammer, Richard Chesnoff, Jeffrey Goldberg and Alan Dershowitz have taken this line of victim-blaming. Notably, Hillary Clinton also advanced the Israeli effort to rewrite history.

The Movement That Dare Not Speak Its Name In Israel

Gideon Levy doesn't want to meet in a coffee bar in Tel Aviv. He is fed up with being hassled in public and spat at, with people not willing to share the table next to him in restaurants. And now he is fed up with the constant presence of his bodyguards, not least because they too have started giving him a hard time about his political views. So he doesn't go out much any more and we sit in the calm of his living room, a few hundred yards from the Yitzhak Rabin Centre. Rabin's assassination by a rightwing Orthodox Jew in 1995 is itself a sobering reminder of the personal cost of peacemaking in Israel. In his column in Haaretz, Levy has long since banged the drum for greater Israeli empathy towards the suffering of the Palestinians. He is a well-known commentator on the left, and one of the few prepared to stick his head above the parapet. Consequently, he is no stranger to opposition from the right. But this time it is different. Yariv Levin, coalition chairman of the Likud-Beytenu faction in the Knesset, recently called for him to be put on trial for treason – a crime which, during wartime, is punishable by death. "It is time we stop regarding despicable phenomena like this with tolerance," Levin said of Levy. Soon after that interview, Eldad Yaniv, a former political adviser to ex-prime minister Ehud Barack, wrote on his Facebook page: "The late Gideon Levy. Get used to it."

Israelis and Palestinians are still burying their loved ones as Gaza's third war in six years continues. Since July 8, when this war began, more than 1,600 Palestinian and 65 Israeli lives have been sacrificed. Many in the world are heartbroken in the powerless certainty that more will die, that more are being killed every hour. This tragedy results from the deliberate obstruction of a promising move toward peace in the region, when a reconciliation agreement among the Palestinian factions was announced in April. This was a major concession by Hamas, in opening Gaza to joint control under a technocratic government that did not include any Hamas members. The new government also pledged to adopt the three basic principles demanded by the Middle East Quartet comprised of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and Russia: nonviolence, recognition of Israel, and adherence to past agreements. Tragically, Israel rejected this opportunity for peace and has succeeded in preventing the new government's deployment in Gaza.

Conflict Resolution 101: Talk To Hamas

The world awaits with bated breath to see if the interim truce negotiated by US Secretary of State John Kerry will lead to a long-term ceasefire. But if US mediation is to be sincere and effective, the American government needs to take Hamas off its terrorist list and allow Hamas to be fully represented at the table. For the past month, Secretary Kerry has been traveling around the the Middle East trying to negotiate an end to the violence. He has had ongoing discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. He consults regularly with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. He’s convened with the governments of influential countries in the region, such as Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar. But there’s one glaring omission in his efforts as mediator: he doesn’t talk directly to Hamas, which has been on the US terrorist list since 1997. Conflict Resolution 101 says “negotiate with all relevant parties.” Senator George Mitchell, who successfully brokered the Good Friday Accord in Northern Ireland, said that serious negotiations were only possible once the British stopped treating the Irish Republican Army as a terrorist organization and began dealing with it as a political entity.

The Annual Hiroshima Day Sackcloth and Ashes Peace Vigil at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Aug 2nd, 2104. Participants are wearing some of the the oldest symbols of protest: sackcloth and sitting on ashes while repenting of the mortal sin of nuclear weapons. Sitting in meditation, wearing the traditional symbols of repentance and protest, peace activists took a moment to acknowledge the suffering cause by nuclear weapons. The Peace Vigil takes place in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the nuclear bomb was invented.

Gregory Boertje-Obed (U.S. Penitentiary, Leavenworth, Kansas) Michael Walli (Federal Correctional Institution McKean, Bradford, Pennsylvania) and I are sending you some of our observations and concerns on the 2nd anniversary of our Transform Now Plowshares action. On July 28, 2012, after thorough study of nuclear issues, and because of our deepening commitment to nonviolence, we engaged in direct action by cutting through four fences at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where the U.S. continues to overhaul and upgrade thermonuclear warheads. On that day, two years ago, when we reached the building where all U.S. highly-enriched (bomb-grade) uranium is stored, we prayed and also wrote messages on the wall, such as “The Fruit of Justice is Peace”. (Realistically, the higher and stronger fences built as a result of our nonviolent incursion can never keep humans safe from inherently dangerous materials and weapons.) We acted humbly as “creative extremists for love”, to cite one of our most important and revered leaders, Martin Luther King, Jr.
