First Nations Activist Receives International Peace Prize

A First Nations rights activist from Grassy Narrows is getting international recognition. Judy DaSilva received the Michael Sattler Peace Prize from the German Mennonite Peace Committee this week. In a news release Lorens Theissen van Esch of the German Mennonite Peace Committee said: "We want to award the prize to Judy DaSilva in order to honour the nonviolent resistance of the Grassy Narrows First Nation against the destruction of nature and for the preservation of their Indigenous culture." DaSilva travelled to Germany to receive the honour and couldn't be reached for comment, but a First Nations councillor from Grassy Narrows said the community is proud of DaSilva for standing up against clear-cut logging. "It wasn't that long ago that I think our people started realizing that we did have rights and that we're equally parts of Canadian society," Lucille McKenzie said. "I think that she enforces that in the work that she does." But McKenzie says there is still work to be done, as the government is making plans to resume logging in the First Nation's traditional territory — against Grassy Narrows’ wishes.

War In Our Collective Imagination

I started seeing graphics pop up on social media sites this past week that said about Gaza: "It's not war. It's murder." So I started asking people what exactly they think war is if it's distinct from murder. Well, war, some of them told me, takes place between armies. So I asked for anyone to name a war during the past century (that is, after World War I) where all or even most or even a majority of the dying was done by members of armies. There may have been such a war. There are enough scholars here today that somebody probably knows of one. But if so, it isn't the norm, and these people I was chatting with through social media couldn't think of any such war and yet insisted that that's just what war is. So, is war then over and nobody told us? For whatever reasons, I then very soon began seeing a graphic sent around that said about Gaza: "It's not war. It's genocide." And the typical explanation I got when I questioned this one was that the wagers of war and the wagers of genocide have different attitudes. Are we sure about that? I've spoken to advocates for recent U.S. wars who wanted all or part of a population wiped out. Plenty of supporters of the latest attacks on Gaza see them as counter-terrorism. In wars between advanced militaries and poor peoples most of the death and injury is on one side and most of it -- by anyone's definition -- civilian. This is as true in Afghanistan, where war rolls on largely unchallenged, as in Gaza, about which we are newly outraged.

The Peace Movement 1914-2014

Since this is a strategy conference of the peace and anti-war movement, and since it is being held against the background of the centenary of the First World War, I will confine my comments largely to issues the centenary should focus on and to the way in which the peace movement can contribute to the anniversary events which will be spreading out over the coming four years. The numerous commemorative events not only in Europe but around the world offer an opportunity to the anti-war and peace movement to publicise and advance its agenda. It seems that so far this agenda is largely absent from the official commemorative programme, at least in Britain where the outlines of such a programme were first presented on 11th October 2012 by Prime Minister David Cameron in a speech at the Imperial War Museum in London[1]. He announced there the appointment of a special advisor, and advisory board, and also that the government was making available a special fund of £ 50 million. The overall purpose of the commemorations of the First World War were threefold, he said: ‘to honour those who served; to remember those who died; and to ensure that the lessons learnt live with us for ever’. We (i.e., the peace movement) may agree that ‘honouring, remembering, and learning lessons’ are indeed appropriate, but may disagree about the precise nature and content of what is being proposed under these three headings. Before addressing this issue, it may be useful to indicate briefly what is being done in Britain. Of the £ 50 million, £ 10 million has been allocated to the Imperial War Museum of which Cameron is a great admirer. More than £ 5 million has been allocated to schools, to enable visits of pupils and teachers to the battlefields in Belgium and France.

The Anti-Empire Report #130

The question is not what pacifism has achieved throughout history, but what has war achieved? Remark made to a pacifist: “If only everyone else would live in the way you recommend, I would gladly live that way as well – but not until everyone else does.” The Pacifist’s reply: “Why then, sir, you would be the last man on earth to do good. I would rather be one of the first.” Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, 1947, words long cherished by a large majority of the Japanese people: “Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. “In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.”

Israeli Peace Activists Attacked By Rightwingers

Several dozen right-wingers interrupted a leftist demonstration against the Israeli operation in Gaza, beating and threatening several demonstrators on Saturday evening in central Tel Aviv. One man was rushed to Ichilov Hospital after he was beaten by the rightists. According to the police, no arrests were made. The leftist demonstration started around 8 P.M., with several hundred demonstration and about 20 police officers in attendance. Opposite the demonstration, several dozen rightist activists also gathered. Shortly after 9 P.M., rocket alerts were sounded in Tel Aviv, and the police officers and demonstrators ran for shelter, while the rightists chased and threatened them, eyewitnesses said.

The Silent Power Of Boycotts And Blockades

Peruse a few reports on global military expenditure and you will not be able to shake the image of the planet as one massive army camp, patrolled by heavily weaponised guards in a plethora of uniforms. Last year, the world spent about 1.76 trillion dollars on military activity according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The year before, arms sales among SIPRI’s ‘Top 100’ companies touched 410 billion dollars. It is estimated that 1,000 people die from gun violence every single day. The newly founded Pan African Network on Nonviolence and Peacebuilding is the first regional initiative of its kind dedicated to connecting African grassroots organisers around nonviolent resistance. But scattered amongst the barracks of this planetary war zone are scores of white flags, wielded daily by the many millions of people engaged in nonviolent resistance to the forces that threaten their existence. Nearly 120 of these peace activists are currently assembled in Cape Town’s City Hall, for the quadrennial meeting of the 93-year-old War Resister’s International (WRI), a global network of activists from far-flung regions fighting on every imaginable front, from anti-trafficking in Australia to peace and reconciliation in Rwanda.

Despite Crackdown, Palestinians Organize For Long-Term Peace

Conflict has erupted in Israel and Palestine after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers early last week week, whom the Israelis say were kidnapped by Hamas. The Western media, for its part, has focused on the street battles between young Palestinians and the Israeli military, rushing to print photos of young Palestinian men throwing rocks and of masked Hamas militants armed at a press conference. However, these images are far from the whole story. On the ground Palestinian groups are acting to turn this rage into long-lasting nonviolent organizing. Last week, the Israeli military sent tanks and troop reinforcements to the border between Israel and the Gaza strip and began heavy airstrikes that have killed at least seven Palestinians — the most recent development in the crackdown on Palestinian life that followed the disappearance of three settler teenagers approximately two weeks ago. Even before the bodies of the teens were found last Monday evening, Israeli had launched a large-scale incursion into West Bank cities, raiding some 2,200 homes, arresting 419 Palestinians and killing at least six.

German Protests Against The Federal Reserve And For Peace

In this video Luke Rudkowski talks to Ken Jebsen a former main stream media journalist in Germany and Lars Maehrholz a skydiver that became the main organizer of the massive Monday peace vigils in Berlin. The protests in Berlin are not a left or right movement but a social media movement against the establishment that have grown to over a 100 cities and 3 countries. They started with Lars 2 1/2 months ago and with the help of Ken fm have grown to a very large number which made the main stream media in Berlin slander and attack the movement. For those interested in the historic background: The German Monday Demonstrations (Montagsdemonstrationen) helped to bring down the repressive surveillance state GDR regime 25 years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monday_....

Spread The Word: Time For World Beyond War

World Beyond War is a global nonviolent movement to end war and establish a just and sustainable peace. This fundraising and advertising campaign is step one in bringing together people and organizations around the world to work toward the complete elimination of war. This campaign itself will have a major impact, and we will maximize media coverage of our billboards, signs, and other ads. Through this campaign, when fully funded, millions of people will become aware of exactly how popular and mainstream the idea of war abolition has become. And many of those who become aware will also become organized to take useful steps in that direction when they sign our Declaration of Peace at WorldBeyondWar.org -- where, already, before any promotion, individuals and organizations of all kinds have signed from 58 countries and rising fast. We have begun working with those groups and individuals on projects that advance the goal of the elimination of war.

Calling ALL Knitters: Join The Rewoolution!

This article is from our associated project, CreativeResistance.org. Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action’s NO To NEW TRIDENT campaign is joining knitting needles across the sea for some major guerilla woolfare. Here are the basics: You knit a pink scarf. It gets assembled, along with other people’s scarfs, into one long section. We ship the whole thing to the United Kingdom where it joins a 7-mile long scarf stretched between the UK’s nuclear weapons factories on August 9, 2014. Then, your scarf is sent to a conflict zone to become a humanitarian blanket. Read on to learn more and get involved.

Summer Activities In Northwest To Abolish Nukes

Well, that's all for now. As you can see Ground Zero people are at it, both in front of and behind the scenes. Even though I have nothing new to share on it today, the legal effort against the Bangor Second Explosives Handling Wharf continues. And so does the rest of the work. You can keep in touch with all of it at both our website at gzcenter.org and our Facebook page (Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action). Send your questions to either me at gznonviolencenews@gmail.com or to info@gzcenter.org. Above all, please get involved in whatever way you are able. Scrapping Trident and abolishing all nuclear weapons is not something politicians will do without a huge groundswell of citizen involvement. So please share our message and work far and wide. We're all in this together, and together we CAN make a difference!!!

The Abolition Of Militarism

We are all aware that this is the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo which led to the start of the First World War in l9l4. What started here in Sarajevo was a century of two global wars, a Cold War, a century of immense, rapid explosion of death and destruction technology, all extremely costly, and extremely risky. A huge step in the history of war, but also a decisive turning point in the history of peace. The peace movement has never been as strong politically as in the last three decades before the break-out of WWl. It was a factor in political life, literature, organization, and planning, the Hague Peace Conferences, the Hague Peace Palace and the International Court of Arbitration, the bestseller of Bertha von Suttner, ‘Lay Down your Arms’. The optimism was high as to what this ‘new science’ of peace could mean to humankind. Parliaments, Kings, and Emperors, great cultural and business personalities involved themselves. The great strength of the Movement was that it did not limit itself to civilizing and slowing down militarism, it demanded its total abolition.

Kathy Kelly and Georgia Walker Arrested

Busloads of activists gathered today at the gate of this base in central Missouri to protest drone warfare waged from inside its boundary. The action was the third in a triple-protest called the Trifecta Resista, which also addressed nuclear weapons and the imprisonment of the whistleblower Chelsea Manning. Voices co-coordinator Kathy Kelly crossed the property line with Georgia Walker, community activist from Midtown, a neighborhood in Kansas City. A few hours ago Kathy Kelly and Georgia Walker were arrested at Whiteman Airforce Base where US killer drones are operated from. As the 2 approached soldiers at the base Kathy was carrying a loaf of bread with the intention to break bread and talk with the soldiers while Georgia carried caution tape to symbolise the danger to life which drones impose

In Breach Of Military Law, Soldiers Secretly Become Pacifists

Serving members of Britain's Armed Forces have secretly joined a pacifist organisation directly opposed to war and the carrying of weapons, The Mail on Sunday can reveal. In a remarkable breach of military law, members of the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy have joined Veterans For Peace UK, which campaigns against armed conflict. It also campaigns to stop the UK Government 'intervening in the internal affairs of other nations' and has organised protests at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day as well as visits to schools to teach pupils the 'true nature' of armed conflict. Last night there were calls for the Ministry of Defence to launch an investigation over fears the group's members will seek to undermine discipline in the Forces.

Support The Next Generation Of Peace Activists

Seven weeks from now 30 young leaders from Central, South, and North America will gather in the foothills of Venezuela's Andes mountains. The Encuentro, or youth summit titled Rooted in Resistance, Sowing Sovereignty, will bring together young leaders from over 20 countries who are actively creating "another world" that is possible! These young leaders, ages 20 to 33, will exchange strategies on local initiatives to resist militarization and repressive neoliberal policies, while upholding sovereignty and affirming the rights of all people. They will remind each other - and all of us - that the collective struggle for dignity will require us to work together as equals to create an alternative world for and by the people. A world in which people are placed over profit, a world where the SOA/WHINSEC shuts its doors forever, a world in which nations honor one another's sovereignty and join the struggle as equals for the dignity of all peoples.
