Hundreds Of New York Times Tech Workers Just Walked Off The Job

Over 300 members of the New York Times Tech Guild walked off the job this afternoon in a planned half-day work stoppage to protest the New York Times Company’s aggressive union-busting. The stoppage was a specific protest against three unfair labor practices, or ULP’s, that the News Guild contends New York Times bosses management engaged in while trying to delay, distract or outright bust their tech workers’ fledgling union. A representative for the News Guild, which represents the NYT Tech Guild, confirmed that three specific ULPs are currently under investigation by the National Labor Relations Board. The work stoppage is the culmination of months of frustration for the Times‘ massive tech workforce, which maintains and builds all of the papers’ digital products, from its website to its various apps.

Palestine Action Is Hitting Drone Maker Elbit Hard

A new short film by Real Media follows the group Palestine Action over the past year. Palestine Action was founded a year ago by activists in the UK to focus on taking direct action against Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems. Elbit is Israel’s largest private arms manufacturer. It makes the vast majority of Israel’s drone fleet and, as the film explains, markets its weapons as “combat proven” – tested on Palestinians. The company has 10 factories and offices in Britain, which the group has been targeting. You can watch the full film in the video above. I am one of several people in the film giving context and analysis. I argue that, with persistence, Palestine Action could ultimately be successful in its goal of expelling Elbit from the UK.

Seattle Vigil Against Racist Medical Negligence

Hundreds of protesters gathered at Westlake Park in Seattle on the afternoon of July 24 for the Healthcare Equity March. This was the most recent of a series of protests centered around Kaloni Bolton, a 12-year-old Black girl who died tragically at the beginning of this year as a result of medical negligence. The protests have been organized by Kaloni’s family and local organization Decolonizing Science, who Kaloni’s mother and aunt Kristina Williams and Francis Bowman say have been very helpful in bringing people out. Williams and Bowman spoke with Liberation News to bring attention to Kaloni’s story. On December 29, 2020, Kaloni’s older sister brought her to the Renton Landing Urgent Care clinic in Renton, Washington, run by Valley Medical Center of University of Washington Medicine.

Actions Demand NY Close Groups Backing Settler Genocide In Palestine

In the morning they picketed the Long Island home of Justin “Yaacov” Fauci, who moved from New York to invade and steal Palestinian lands including the Al-Kurd family home. He became notorious in a video that went viral of him publicly admitting his crime when he stated, “If I don’t steal it, someone else is gonna,” as he invaded the Palestinian home. In the afternoon, the advocates marched in Brooklyn, NY and picketed the offices of New York Attorney General Letitia James to draw attention to New York-based Zionist nonprofits helping settlers – like Long Island-born Fauci – to participate in the ethnic cleansing and genocide of Palestinians.

‘Block The Boat’ Hits New Jersey

Last weekend activists activists held an action at a port in Elizabeth, New Jersey, attempting to block an Israeli-operated cargo ship from unloading. The Haifa-based shipping company ZIM has been targeted by the BDS movement over its connection to Israeli apartheid and last month Bay Area protestors successfully stopped ZIM from offloading in Oakland.

Coal Miners Hit Streets Of NYC To Protest Corporate Greed

Faced with intransigence from the company and increasing hostility on the picket line, a caravan of striking miners and their supporters came back to New York City to voice their demands and hold a rally on July 28 in front of the NYC headquarters of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager and Warrior Met’s biggest investor. In this TRNN report, part of our ongoing series “Battleground Brookwood,” we give an update on the strike and hear directly from striking miner Mike Wright.

Protesters gathered before the Dail today and staged a “tug-of-war” to highlight fracked gas imports and the climate implications of data centres. Members of Extinction Rebellion Ireland dressed as representatives of tech companies as part of their campaign, holding the rope on one end during a tug-of-war while children pulled on the other.

More Protests In Brazil Over COVID Crisis

Protesters have taken to the streets across Brazil once more to demand far-right President Jair Bolsonaro step down over his government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic as well as recent corruption allegations. Demonstrators marched in Rio de Janeiro and several other cities nationwide on Saturday in the latest display of public anger and frustration to hit the South American nation in recent weeks.

German Olympic Gymnastics Team Will Wear Unitards In Protest

Germany’s women’s Olympic gymnastic team will wear unitards at the Tokyo 2020 games in protest against the “sexualisation” of the sport. The team will wear full-body outfits that cover their legs from hip to ankle. This is an obvious difference from the traditional leotard which usually leaves the entire leg and hip exposed on the female gymnasts. The unitard, although breaking from conventions, doesn’t defy the rules of the competition.

Protesters Urge Boris Johnson To Take Climate Talks Seriously

Protesters will fill London’s Parliament Square on Friday morning, calling on the prime minister, Boris Johnson, to make the climate crisis his top priority, as the UK prepares to host UN talks that will determine whether the world tips into environmental catastrophe this decade. Giant alarm clocks will show time running out, while 100 protesters chant that Johnson and his chancellor, Rishi Sunak, are “missing in action” on the climate crisis.

Cubans Take To The Street In Defense Of The Revolution

Thousands of Cubans took to the streets in defense of their revolutionary government on Saturday as President Miguel Díaz-Canel vowed to defend the country from outside interference. “We are going to put our hearts into Cuba — together we can — because Cuba is love, peace, and solidarity,” he said. Demonstrations took place in the capital Havana and other cities in a rejection of the messages circulating on social media aimed at destabilizing the country. Mr. Díaz-Canel denounced the “unconventional warfare” being waged against Cuba: a reference to the social media campaign using the hashtag #SOSCuba, which has its origins in the United States and organizations linked to the shady National Endowment for Democracy, as reported in the Morning Star last week.

Elbit Tamworth Shut Down For The Third Time

Action follows brutalisation of Palestinians by Israeli forces over the weekend, with almost 400 injured as live ammunition was used against Palestinians protesting illegal land confiscation in the West Bank. Elbit’s technologies are central to the surveillance and repression of Palestinians in the occupied territories This action is the third time that Palestine Action have occupied the site since February 2021, with the site being guarded by significantly heightened security. Today’s action – as with all Palestine Action occupations – intends to be as disruptive as possible to the flow of arms to Israel At 6:00am on Monday 12th July, Palestine Action activists stormed the site of Elbit subsidiary Elite KL in Tamworth, Staffordshire, in order to prevent the manufacture of military hardware central to Israel’s ongoing repression of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.

Frito-Lay Workers Strike Over 84-Hour Weeks, Meager Raises

“Nobody I know loves Frito-Lay enough that they want to live there,” said Monk Drapeaux-Stewart, a box drop technician, responsible for keeping the plant’s machines supplied with cardboard. “We want to go home and see our families. We want to have our weekends off. We want to work the time that we agreed to work—and hopefully not much more than that.”

Grandparents Protest Chase And Pressure Biden On Climate

"Because the bank management chose to avoid arrests at its front door, our group eventually took our rockers and banners and moved into the street in front of the bank. There we were arrested — Michael Bagdes-Canning, 67, was shoved into a police car and Padma Dyvine, 71, became the first to be loaded into the police van. We were held in frigid cells for some hours before release with an expectation that we would be summoned to court at a later date."
