What It’s Like To Grow Up Hunted

When I was just 10, I already knew what it was like to plan for a future without my parents. It was a quiet Sunday night when my dad told me to hide in a closet — and stay there until he said to come out. As I sat in the dark, I knew this was part of my life, part of my identity. The darkness and fear slowly penetrated my heart. I tightened up my fist, as if to squeeze the bravery I had in my heart to walk out of the closet. My brother and sister were hidden somewhere else, and all the lights were out.

Israel Police Limit Right To Protest

Israel’s police has drawn up new regulations restricting the rights to civil protests, with those who break them committing “criminal offences”. Despite the Israeli High Court of Justice having permitted the holding of demonstrations of any size without the necessity for a permit two years ago, police are exploiting a loophole in which the term “protest event” will be used. This concept, which has not been mentioned in Israeli law until this day, consists of a demonstration of more than 50 people “aimed at expressing an idea, protest or message,” a vague and general description which can apply to any prominent rally.

Julian Assange’s Health Is Declining Rapidly

In an interview on August 16 with 3CR, a Melbourne community radio station, Julian Assange’s father John Shipton stated that the WikiLeaks founder’s health is continuing to deteriorate in Britain’s maximum-security Belmarsh Prison. Shipton revealed that Assange had received a visit from his brother Gabriel several days earlier. “Julian is emaciated and not in tip-top order or health,” Shipton said. “He is suffering anxiety. He is still in fighting spirits, but his well-being is declining rapidly.”

Wyatt Detention Facility Correctional Officer Put On Leave After Truck Drives Into Protesters

Officials at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility have placed a correctional officer on administrative leave after a pickup truck drove into protesters who were blocking the entrance to the facility’s employee parking lot Wednesday night. Protest organizers said a 64-year-old man suffered a broken leg, internal bleeding and possibly a back injury. Amy Anthony, spokeswoman for Never Again Action, identified the man as Jerry Belair, of Warren. She said another person, whom she could not identify, was also injured by the truck.

Faith-Based Peace Activists, Facing 25-Year Sentence, Defend Disarmament Action At Nuclear Submarine Base

"I would argue our communal criminal history has been all about upholding the basic tenets of love and providing for the common good." Advocates for seven faith-based peace activists are calling on the public to support the group as they fight federal charges and a potential 25-year prison sentence for disarming a nuclear submarine base. The Kings Bay Plowshares Seven (KBP7) nonviolently and symbolically disarmed the Trident nuclear submarine base in Kings Bay, Georgia on April 4, 2018.

Chicago Police Compiling Dossiers On People Who Speak At Police Board Meetings

Why would the Chicago Police Department be running background checks on people who sign up to speak at public meetings of the city’s police disciplinary panel? That is what many people want to know after a public records request conducted by the Chicago Tribune revealed that since January 2018, CPD has collected information on at least 60 people in advance of their speaking at the weekly meetings—a practice that police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed has been going on since at least 2013.

Julian Assange’s Lawyer Pleads With Australians To Help Bring Him Home

After Julian Assange’s lawyer failed to drum up political support in Canberra last week, she is now asking the Australian public to help bring him home. London-based human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson visited the capital last week to dine with Anthony Albanese and speak to more than 30 MPs to raise support for the Townsville-born Assange. Despite her lobbying attempts, none of the major parties has publicly supported the embattled Australian. Ms Robinson is calling on Australians to take an interest in the case. Last month, Assange, 48, dropped an appeal against his 50-week jail term in Britain for jumping bail when he sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy.

Cops And Legal System Persecute Videographer Of Eric Garner’s Murder

Ramsey Orta’s resolute fight. The day after New York’s chief medical examiner ruled Garner’s death a homicide and Orta’s video went viral, NYPD’s finest began their revenge. By retaliating against him, they sought also to intimidate others from providing such stunning video evidence of police brutality. As Orta walked near his home, cops piled from a van and surrounded him, holding cameras in his face and sneering, “Smile, motherfucker.” They cuffed and arrested him claiming he had a gun — which he didn’t.

Judge Denies Chelsea Manning A Hearing, Insists Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars In Fines Are Not Punishment

A federal judge denied Chelsea Manning’s motion to reconsider fines imposed against her for refusing to testify before the grand jury investigating WikiLeaks. He also undermined due process and refused to hold a hearing. “Manning has the ability to comply with the court’s financial sanctions or will have the ability after her release from confinement,” Judge Anthony Trenga ruled. “Therefore, the imposed fines of $500 per day after 30 days and $1,000 per day after 60 days is not so excessive as to relieve her of those sanctions or to constitute punishment rather than a coercive measure.”

Death Curse In Caloto – Colombian Unionist And Opposition Candidate Declared “Military Object”

Under cover of night while those inside are sleeping, a manila envelope is slipped under the door. Rising in the morning to greet the day, Andy Murcia Parra picks it up and opens it. But even before reading the words, the intent of the message is already clear: it is a letter of death, a spell delivered to instill the curse of terror.  In Colombia, they say the best way to break the curse’s power, its stranglehold of fear, is to not be silent. The note, dated July 24, 2019, declared Gerardo “Nene” Barona Avirama and Murcia as “military objects”.

Brazilians Protest Bolsonaro’s Threats Against Glenn Greenwald

Brazilian journalists, artists, politicians, and activists came together Tuesday in support of journalist Glenn Greenwald who is being threatened by the government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro commented that United States journalist Glenn Greenwald "may be imprisoned" for publishing information in The Intercept Brazil that incriminates the nation’s Justice Minister Sergio Moro. The protest was held at the Brazilian Press Association in Rio de Janeiro where Greenwald and others spoke about press freedom.

Enemies Of The State: Three Eco-Defenders Killed, Countless Criminalized Each Week

Calls to protect the planet are growing louder – but around the world, those defending their land and our environment are being silenced. More than three such people were murdered on average every week in 2018, with attacks driven by destructive industries like mining, logging and agribusiness. This year, our annual report on the killings of land and environmental defenders also reveals how countless more people were threatened, arrested or thrown in jail for daring to oppose the governments or companies seeking to profit from their land. These are ordinary people trying to protect their homes and livelihoods, and standing up for the health of our planet.

Bolsonaro: Greenwald ‘May be Imprisoned’, Journalist Says ‘ No’

'Contrary to Bolsonaro's wishes, he is not (yet) a dictator. He has no power to order people arrested,' said Greenwald after the president threatened to incarcerate the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Indignation broke out across Brazil after President Jair Bolsonaro commented that United States journalist Glenn Greenwald "may be imprisoned" for publishing information in The Intercept Brazil that incriminates the nation’s Justice Minister Sergio Moro. The comments of the ultra-right president were condemned by opposition politicians and journalist associations that accused him of "serious aggression against freedom of expression."

The Top 5 Ways To Defeat ICE Agents

The Democrats and the corporate media will breathlessly tell you how Donald Trump is a racist (he is). They’ll relay the gut-wrenching horror of having your family ripped apart by Border Patrol (I’m sure it is). They’ll let you know that keeping children in cages is not what America stands for and not who we are (it kinda is). But despite all of this, they practically never tell everyone how to actually fight back against ICE raids and Border Patrol detentions. Welcome to the paradoxical sales pitch of the neoliberal morass—“Act like you hate racism while doing almost nothing to stop racist policies that have gone on for decades!”
