Sure, but all radical groups say that the system is the problem, right? So when Symbiosis – a coalition of grassroots organizations stretching from Jackson, Mississippi to Oaxaca, Mexico, and from Portland Oregon to Burlington, Vermont – declared its opening public statement last month, announcing that it would hold its congress on September 18-22 in Detroit, you might have had to dig a little deeper to understand why Symbiosis is different. And why identifying the “system” as the problem is more important than we’ve been lulled into from realizing.

Despite enormous ongoing effort over more than a thousand years, during and since the formation and shaping of the modern world, and as the number of issues being contested has steadily increased, activists of many types have made insufficient progress on key issues, particularly in relation to ending violence and war (and the threat of nuclear war), stopping the exploitation of many peoples and halting the endless assaults on Earth’s biosphere. Of course, in order for those of us who identify as activists to have any prospect of success in these and other endeavors, we need to understand how the world works and to develop an interrelated set of nonviolent strategies that are being effectively implemented to address each of the key aspects of this crisis.

Colombian Military Attacks Popular Movements TWICE In Cauca

There is a crisis happening right now in Cauca, Colombia. The Colombian Armed Forces have attacked a “minga” in the village of Cairo, municipality of Cajibío – twice in two days – and are still present and threatening more assaults. The minga is a collective consultation called by indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and farming communities and organizations, including FENSUAGRO, the agricultural workers union and with whom the Alliance for Global Justice works. Participants are demanding to meet with Colombia’s President Ivan Duque, who has so far not responded.

Several groups of artists, journalists, intellectuals and social groups from around Latin America have shown their support for Venezuela, its Bolivarian Government, and have rejected any interventionist acts perpetrated by the United States. In Argentina, the group of intellectuals Carta Abierta met in Buenos Aires to state their support to the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, in the face of the U.S. attacks that have promoted a coup in the country through right-wing opposition groups. Through a statement entitled "Our Support for the Government of Nicolas Maduro", the members of the group assured that the attacks suffered by Venezuela are part of the "most brutal exercise of a new act of imperial domination, of decrepit imperial domination."

‘Valve Turners’ Shut Down Enbridge Oil Pipelines In Minnesota

Itasca County, Minnesota – Today four people calling themselves the “Four Necessity Valve turners” shut down Enbridge’s Line 3 and Line 4 tar sands oil pipelines in Minnesota citing “imminent and irreversible damage being done to the planet.” The activists entered pipeline service locations and advised Enbridge of their intention to stop the flow of oil by shutting down the safety valves. Enbridge eventually manually shut down both the Line 3 and 4 tar sands pipelines. The ‘four necessity valve turners’: Allyson Polman, Brenna Cussen Anglada, Michele Naar Obed, and Daniel Yildirim, documented their action in a live feed filled with prayer, song, and an encounter with law enforcement, with one officer who came on them with their gun drawn.

Eight years ago on Monday, Tunisia's dictator President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled the country as the people declared a revolution that ushered in the Arab Spring. The struggle for democracy still continues today in the north African nation, and radical municipalism plays an important, often undiscussed role – particularly in Jemna. Jemna is a south Tunisian oasis famous for its 'deglet nour' (“dates of light”), fruits that have long nourished locals. Jemna is also gaining a reputation as a beacon of people power. Tunisia continues to lead the region with socially progressive momentum, especially in comparison to the extreme violence and bloody aftermath of other democratic uprisings across the Middle East since 2011.
