Symbiosis Is Different: Why This Revolutionary Network Could Change Anti-Capitalist Politics

Sure, but all radical groups say that the system is the problem, right? So when Symbiosis – a coalition of grassroots organizations stretching from Jackson, Mississippi to Oaxaca, Mexico, and from Portland Oregon to Burlington, Vermont – declared its opening public statement last month, announcing that it would hold its congress on September 18-22 in Detroit, you might have had to dig a little deeper to understand why Symbiosis is different. And why identifying the “system” as the problem is more important than we’ve been lulled into from realizing.

Get Up And Get Going: How To Form A Group

Becoming radicalized in a small town by yourself, seemingly in the “middle of nowhere,” can often be one of the most difficult experiences you may ever encounter. But even harder than the feeling of being adrift can be the desperation of not knowing how to go about attempting to make the leap from being just an individual with a set of ideas to someone that is part of a movement and specifically, a group of people who are organized in a set area, acting in concert, with that movement.

Why Activists Fail – OpEd

Despite enormous ongoing effort over more than a thousand years, during and since the formation and shaping of the modern world, and as the number of issues being contested has steadily increased, activists of many types have made insufficient progress on key issues, particularly in relation to ending violence and war (and the threat of nuclear war), stopping the exploitation of many peoples and halting the endless assaults on Earth’s biosphere. Of course, in order for those of us who identify as activists to have any prospect of success in these and other endeavors, we need to understand how the world works and to develop an interrelated set of nonviolent strategies that are being effectively implemented to address each of the key aspects of this crisis.

Colombian Military Attacks Popular Movements TWICE In Cauca

There is a crisis happening right now in Cauca, Colombia. The Colombian Armed Forces have attacked a “minga” in the village of Cairo, municipality of Cajibío – twice in two days – and are still present and threatening more assaults. The minga is a collective consultation called by indigenous, Afro-Colombian, and farming communities and organizations, including FENSUAGRO, the agricultural workers union and with whom the Alliance for Global Justice works. Participants are demanding to meet with Colombia’s President Ivan Duque, who has so far not responded.

Power To The people!

Ever since November 17, from the smallest village in the countryside to the biggest city, we have been rising up against this profoundly violent, unfair and unbearable society. We are not going to be pushed around! We are revolting against the high cost of living, against precarity and misery. We want our loved ones, our families and our children to live in dignity. 26 billionaires own as much as half of the human species and that is unacceptable. Let’s share wealth and not misery!

We Refuse To Stop Dreaming

For the first two days of March, our team met outside São Paulo (Brazil) at the Florestan Fernandes National School of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (the Movement of Landless Workers, the MST). This was the first meeting of our entire team, exactly a year since our website went live. It was a magical gathering, our hard-working researchers discussing the work they have been doing and the agenda that we want to elaborate upon in the years to come.

Extinction Rebellion

There is one desperate chance left to thwart the impending ecocide and extinction of the human species. We must, in wave after wave, carry out nonviolent acts of civil disobedience to shut down the capitals of the major industrial countries, crippling commerce and transportation, until the ruling elites are forced to publicly state the truth about climate catastrophe, implement radical measures to halt carbon emissions by 2025 and empower an independent citizens committee to oversee the termination of our 150-year binge on fossil fuels. If we do not do this, we will face mass death.

Social Movements Show Support To The Bolivarian Revolution

Several groups of artists, journalists, intellectuals and social groups from around Latin America have shown their support for Venezuela, its Bolivarian Government, and have rejected any interventionist acts perpetrated by the United States. In Argentina, the group of intellectuals Carta Abierta met in Buenos Aires to state their support to the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, in the face of the U.S. attacks that have promoted a coup in the country through right-wing opposition groups. Through a statement entitled "Our Support for the Government of Nicolas Maduro", the members of the group assured that the attacks suffered by Venezuela are part of the "most brutal exercise of a new act of imperial domination, of decrepit imperial domination."

Youth Movements Changing Tactics In The Face Of Climate Crisis

Back in 2015, a group of youth warriors bravely filed a lawsuit against the federal government for failing to protect their right to life and liberty by willfully ignoring the dangers of climate change. Last month, the 21 plaintiffs of Juliana v. United States gathered under the same roof for the first time in quite a while at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. The group convened with leaders of the most powerful movements of our time to share their experiences and discuss what need to be done to address our climate crisis.

Call For A Palestine Liberation Movement

We are calling for signatures on the statement which is an attempt to create national and global public opinion specially among Palestinians, Arabs and international supporters about the genuine, just and long lasting solution to the seven decades of the ethnic cleansing war and catastrophe of 1948. The One Democratic State of Palestine (ODSP)initiative stands in opposition and objection to the dead solution of the two states, the Oslo Accords and exposing the latest racist Nation-State Law that was issued by the apartheid state of Israel which emphasizes the real nature of this manufactured colonial state.

Sunrise Movement Kicks Off Green New Deal Week Of Action

With more than 400 watch parties nationwide and over 2000 people RVSP'd as of this writing, Sunrise said the webinar livestream "is shaping up to be the biggest coordinated event" in the movement's history. Go to the Sunrise website to RSVP for the event, which is scheduled to begin at 8pm ET. The event will feature youth climate leaders as well as author and activist Naomi Klein. "As Trump gets ready to spread his message of fear, division, and denial," Sunrise declared, "we'll be laying out our plans for how to bring the Green New Deal to every corner of this country and elevate the crisis that our president and his fossil fuel billionaire friends want us to ignore."

‘Valve Turners’ Shut Down Enbridge Oil Pipelines In Minnesota

Itasca County, Minnesota – Today four people calling themselves the “Four Necessity Valve turners” shut down Enbridge’s Line 3 and Line 4 tar sands oil pipelines in Minnesota citing “imminent and irreversible damage being done to the planet.” The activists entered pipeline service locations and advised Enbridge of their intention to stop the flow of oil by shutting down the safety valves. Enbridge eventually manually shut down both the Line 3 and 4 tar sands pipelines. The ‘four necessity valve turners’: Allyson Polman, Brenna Cussen Anglada, Michele Naar Obed, and Daniel Yildirim, documented their action in a live feed filled with prayer, song, and an encounter with law enforcement, with one officer who came on them with their gun drawn.

Rebel Cities 18: Eight Years After Jasmine Revolution, Jemna Is Tunisia’s Oasis Of Hope

Eight years ago on Monday, Tunisia's dictator President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled the country as the people declared a revolution that ushered in the Arab Spring. The struggle for democracy still continues today in the north African nation, and radical municipalism plays an important, often undiscussed role – particularly in Jemna. Jemna is a south Tunisian oasis famous for its 'deglet nour' (“dates of light”), fruits that have long nourished locals. Jemna is also gaining a reputation as a beacon of people power. Tunisia continues to lead the region with socially progressive momentum, especially in comparison to the extreme violence and bloody aftermath of other democratic uprisings across the Middle East since 2011.

Reflections On Olympia Assembly: An Experiment In Popular Power

Olympia Assembly started in March of 2017, amidst ecological and political catastrophe. It was created as a communal assembly project, coalescing around points of unity such as direct democracy, non-hierarchy, ecology, mutual aid, and direct action. The goal of the organization is to build the new world in the shell of the old by creating the building blocks of a libertarian socialist dual power project. It seeks to meet people’s needs and decentralize power, leading to a crisis of legitimacy for the state where people powered institutions are posed against hierarchical structures.

Popular Power In A Time Of Reaction: Strategy For Social Struggle

Last year in “Below and Beyond Trump: Power and Counterpower,” we argued that the U.S. ruling class is in the midst of a destabilizing political crisis, leading to increasing politicization and polarization across the country, and that the Trump regime is both a symptom and a cause of the current divisions playing out at the top of the political food chain. In response to the rise of Trump...
