Are Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaigns Working?

Is fossil fuels divestment an effective strategy in tackling climate change? A newly released study by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst suggests that this strategy is not sufficient on its own in affecting the global battle against climate change and that new approaches are needed. Robert Pollin, a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, co-director of PERI and co-author of the study spoke to C.J. Polychroniou about the limits of the movement to divest from fossil fuels and the need for fresh approaches and a more holistic type of action for combatting climate change.

Atlantic Coast Pipeline Faces Civil Rights Complaint After Key Permit Is Blocked

A federal court has invalidated a key permit for the Atlantic Coast pipeline project, a step that could give civil rights advocates more time to build their environmental justice case against the $6 billion project to carry natural gas from West Virginia to North Carolina. Opponents of the Atlantic Coast pipeline allege the Dominion Energy-led project would have a disproportionate impact on people of color living along its route. A group of community and statewide advocacy groups in North Carolina, along with the national Friends of the Earth, filed a complaint with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's External Civil Rights Compliance Office on Tuesday asking the agency to overturn North Carolina state permits for the pipeline and for a new environmental justice analysis of it.

New Data Offers Insights Into The Dynamics Of Nonviolent Resistance

In a recent article for The Guardian, L.A. Kaufman argues that we are living in a “golden age” of protest. But, she cautions, protests are often not enough for movements to realize their desired outcomes. Applying more disruptive methods, like sit-ins or blockades, is a necessary next step for organizers who wish to effect transformative change. Indeed, tactical innovation and the adoption of a broad range of nonviolent methods is a hallmark of successful resistance campaigns in the past. That said, little systematic research exists to help organizers understand when and how to use different methods of resistance. How can shifting between acts of omission and commission, concentration and dispersion, or protest, noncooperation and intervention advantage or disadvantage nonviolent movements?

Poor people of all races are shifting the national conversation on poverty and race from "right vs. left" to "right vs. wrong." Thousands of civil rights advocates, low-wage workers, and religious leaders kicked off massive protests on May 14, launching a 40-day campaign across the nation in an effort to revive Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s Campaign. The Poor People’s Campaign brings together poor and marginalized people from all backgrounds, places, and religions to stand up for their lives and rights by calling for a “revolution of American values.” They’re taking aim at the evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation. The first Poor People’s Campaign in 1968 brought thousands of Americans of all races together to fight for fair incomes and living standards.

At The Local And State Level, New Campaign Aims To Generate National Support For UN Treaty To Ban Nuclear Weapons

The newly-launched 'Treaty Compliance Campaign' is targeted at gaining national support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was adopted by 122 nations at the United Nation's in July of last year. While the U.S. remains the world's largest nuclear power—and numerous past presidents past have said they believe in the goal of a nuclear-free world—lawmakers in Washington, D.C. have steadfastly refused to endorse the treaty that would bar all signatories from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, acquiring, possessing, or stockpiling nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices. Not only has the U.S. not signed the treaty, it has so far boycotted the negotiations and actively lobbied other countries not to sign it. With that in mind, the anti-nuke coalition's new campaign wants cities and states governments—as well as businesses, universities, faith communities, and individuals—to comply with the treaty nevertheless.

On March 24, I stood in the rain in front of City Hall in Bellingham, Washington with some 3,000 people for the local March for Our Lives demonstration. It was one of 800 similar events happening nationwide that day, with about two million people participating coast to coast. The March for Our Lives against gun violence is one example of the wave of massive demonstrations that have swept the country since the Trump administration took office. From the Women’s March, to responses to Trump’s attacks on Muslims and immigrants, to protests against police violence, rallies for healthcare, and uprisings against pipelines, the last two years have been characterized by mass movements unparalleled in the United States in decades. Many, like the March for Our Lives, involve young people in leading roles. As someone who spent most of the past decade as a “youth activist” — in my case, a climate activist — I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time.

The Historic Korean Peace Declaration Was Made Possible By Social Movements, Not Trump

President Donald Trump—who has previously threatened the entire Korean peninsula with nuclear annihilation—now appears to be claiming credit for a historic step towards military de-escalation taken April 27 by North and South Korean heads of state. Following a joint peace declaration by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in, Trump was met at an April 28 rally in Michigan with chants of “Nobel! Nobel!” He replied to the crowd: “That’s very nice, thank you… I just want to get the job done.” According to peace activist Christine Ahn, the “job” of pushing leaders to move towards formally ending the Korean War was, in fact, accomplished by dogged Korean anti-war activists who helped oust former South Korean President Park Geun-hye in 2017 and gave Moon Jae-in a mandate for peace.

The Souls of Poor Folk is an assessment of the conditions today and trends of the past 50 years in the United States. In 1967 and 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., alongside a multiracial coalition of grassroots leaders, religious leaders, and other public figures, began organizing with poor and marginalized communities across racial and geographic divides. Together, they aimed to confront the underlying structures that perpetuated misery in their midst. The move towards a Poor People’s Campaign was a challenge to the national morality: it was a movement to expose the injustice of the economic, political, and social systems in the U.S. during their time. 50 years later, The Souls of Poor Folk challenges us to take a look at how these conditions have changed since 1968.

A Moral Agenda Based On Fundamental Rights

Since 2010, 23 states have passed racist voter suppression laws, including racist gerrymandering and redistricting, laws that make it harder to register, reduced early voting days and hours, purging voter rolls, and more restrictive voter ID laws. Following the Shelby County v. Holder Supreme Court case, which gutted key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, by 2016 14 states had new voting restrictions in place before the Presidential election and there were 868 fewer polling places. There are also 6.1 million people who have been disenfranchised due to felony convictions, including one in 13 Black adults. While these laws have disproportionately targeted Black people, in 2016, at least 17 states saw voter suppression cases targeting American Indian and Alaskan Native voters. Thirteen states that passed voter suppression laws also opted not to accept expanded Medicaid benefits offered under the Affordable Care Act.

A coalition of peace and social justice groups is calling for a set of major protest actions on the weekend of April 14 and 15, everywhere from large cities like New York, Oakland, Washington DC, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Chicago to smaller actions in Kalamazoo, Buffalo, El Paso, Portland, Maine, Portland, Oregon and Greenwich, Connecticut. The April 14 and 15 action plan was kicked off by a diverse set of activist groups and leaders, led by the energetic United National Antiwar Coalition and the #NoForeignBasesmovement, but representing a variety of organizations including World Beyond War, Black Alliance for Peace, Code Pink, Veterans for Peace, United for Peace and Justice, Green Party of the United States and many, many more.

Social movements call for various acts in support of the Brazilian ex-president that will be taking place throughout the country until next May 1. The Popular Brazil and People Without Fear fronts (Povo Sem Medo) published a letter addressed to the followers of Lula who wish to participate in the demonstrations against the imprisonment of the Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva carried out this Saturday, April 7. Both fronts bring together social movements of various causes in resistance to political coups that have been carried out since 2015, such as the one perpetrated in the form of a political trial against President Dilma Rousseff. "The detention of Lula is an essential part of the coup that is ongoing against the Brazilian people. The conservative offensive that led the impeachment against President Dilma, led to the murder of Marielle Franco, also manifested in the prison of President Lula.

WASHINGTON — A group of about 25, including students from Loras College in Iowa and members of Baltimore's Jonah House and the Atlantic Life Community, participated in a Faith and Resistance retreat and public witness in Washington, D.C., on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. The retreat was organized by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker, according to an email from Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Art Laffin. The theme of the retreat was "Standing With the Crucified Christ Today." After reflection, liturgy and planning March 29, the group conducted actions at both the Pentagon and the White House on Good Friday, March 30.
