Popular Resistance Newsletter – People Joining Across Spectrum To Stop War On Syria And It’s Having An Effect

Last week we wrote about what you could do to stop the war in Syria. This week we can say – many Americans are taking the action needed to stop this war. If we succeed, and it is still a very big ‘if,’ it will be a historic. We cannot remember when the American people stopped a war after a president said he wanted to bomb a country. How close are we? The Washington Post is reporting that 180 members of the House of Representatives are leaning toward a ‘no war’ vote. FireDogLake reports 216 are leaning no. To win requires 217 votes. We need to solidify those who are leaning toward voting ‘no to war’ and convince enough undecided votes to vote ‘no.’ Click here for an updated tally. The media is reporting that Congress is being flooded with phone calls and that at constituent meetings people are telling their representatives to vote ‘no’ on war.

No Fast Track For TPP Says Right-Left Alliance In Congress

What could conservative Republican Reps. Michele Bachmann and Walter Jones and liberal Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro possibly agree on? They all want to limit President Barack Obama’s ability to “fast-track” international trade deals. The three representatives are gathering lawmakers’ signatures on letters that seek to block Obama from using the fast-track process called Trade Promotion Authority, which limits Congress to up-or-down votes on free-trade agreements and bars all amendments. Every president since Richard Nixon has had that power, although it lapsed in 2007 because of a lack of major trade deals requiring its reauthorization.

Tar Sands A Dirty Outcome Of Free Trade Failures

Sovereignty can only be described as absent in cases where Canada is unable to provide its own natural resources to its own people in need. Still other NAFTA provisions can be used to force tar sands bitumen across the border. Articles within NAFTA’s chapter 11, often referred to as investor-state provisions, could potentially be used by TransCanada to push through Keystone XL, avoiding public debate and environmental regulation. Investor-state provisions allow corporations to bring lawsuits against governments if they perceive unfair treatment or loss of projected revenue. As of March 2013, over 100 cases have been brought about using NAFTA’s chapter 11. The threat of costly legal action deters governments from creating laws and regulations that promote regional development and public safety.

Stopping The Trans-Pacific Partnership Essential To Universal Health Care

The Obama administration has been negotiating an agreement called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) for the past three years that is now heading into the final stages and could be signed into law as early as October. If it is not stopped, this new agreement has the potential to prohibit single payer health insurance, even at the state level, or any new public insurance, could cement the privatization of Medicare, could prevent many of the mechanisms that are commonly used to control health care costs and would raise the prices of medications and pharmaceutical devices. The TPP is being negotiated as a trade agreement, but in fact, it is much more than that. Of the 29 chapters, only five are traditional trade chapters.

TPP Is Job-Killing Trade Deal With Bipartisan Support

“On health care, on transportation, on abortion, on just about any significant policy issue, the Republicans and Democrats are at a complete stalemate,” said Auggie Tantillo, a strategic consultant to the National Council of Textile Organizations, a lobbying group dedicated to the welfare of the U.S. textile industry. “On trade, there is an odd and convenient bipartisanship. You have these huge retailers and importers that are supporting the TPP on both sides of the aisle.” Curt Ellis, communications director for the American Jobs Alliance, put it more bluntly: “Both Democrats and Republicans have been captured by the financial elite on Wall Street and are doing their bidding. Both parties are collaborating on the economic destruction of this country,” he says. “We can expect [U.S. House Speaker John] Boehner to hold Obama’s hand as they push us over the cliff.”

Be Wary – AFL-CIO Joins Effort To Stop The TPP

Corporations are trying to manipulate the Trans-Pacific Partnership—a free trade agreement being negotiated right now that would be bigger than NAFTA—to increase their power over the global economy, so they have a say in everything from your rights at work to the prices of your prescriptions and the safety of your child’s toys. Watch the video below to learn more and share it with your friends. Then send an email to trade representatives for all the countries involved to tell them to create a trade agreement that works for working families.

Trans-Pacific Partnership – Corporate Coup d’Etat Against Us

This time we really must pay attention, because TPP is not just another trade deal. First, it is massive and open-ended. It would hitch us immediately to 11 Pacific Rim nations (Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam), and its door would remain wide open to lure China, Indonesia, Russia, and other nations to come in. Second, note that many of those countries already have trade agreements with the US. Hence, this amazing fact: TPP is a “trade deal” that mostly does not deal with trade. In fact, of the 29 chapters in this document, only five cover traditional trade matters! The other two dozen chapters amount to a devilish “partnership” for corporate protectionism.

Welcome to the Resistance Report, stories covered this week: Bradley Manning gets sentenced to 35 years, changes name to Chelsea Manning and pushes for a Presidential pardon. Also, we have new reports on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and The Wisconsin Solidarity Sing along and with regard to the 50th anniversary of the march on Washington we ask if it is a new call to resistance and rebuilding, or a pep rally for the Democratic Party?

S17: Global Solidarity for Global Justice! Stop TPP & TTIP

OWS makes the TPP and TTIP focus of S17. On September 17th, 2011, we came together to Occupy Wall Street to resist the destructive impact of unchecked corporate power and greed on our quality of life. Two years later, instead of responding to the outrage of the 99%, the megacorporations are mounting a counterattack. Companies like American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC); Halliburton; Monsanto; Chevron; Cargill; Pfizer; Exxon Mobil; Citi; Gap, Inc.; Goldman Sachs; and Wal-mart – deregulation-happy banksters, union busters, polluters, human rights violators, factory farmers, outsourcers and sweatshop barons, big box killers of mom and pop retailers, GMO seed pushers, big pharma and war profiteers, have united as the US Business Coalition for TPP to launch a stealth assault on democracy itself – one that will leave our courts and elected officials virtually powerless to reign in their greed-driven attack on the 99%.

Hundreds March Against Trans-Pacific Partnership In Minnesota

Hundreds of labor, fair trade, environmental and community activists marched through downtown Minneapolis today to protest the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a massive trade deal that could jeopardize American jobs, wages, consumer safety, health care and environmental standards. “We are building people power. We are movement building,” Communications Workers of America (CWA) President Larry Cohen told the crowd. Cohen was joined by Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition Director Josh Wise, TakeAction Minnesota Executive Director Dan McGrath,CWA's Minnesota State Council President Mona Meyer and other coalition allies.

President Obama has now formally requested Fast Track (Trade Promotion Authority) from Congress. Fast Track would grant the President the full power to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership and sign it. The President, through the office of the US Trade Representative and with the help of more than 600 corporate advisers, has been negotiating the TPP largely in secret for the past three years. If the President is granted Fast Track, then Congress would only have the ability to vote on the TPP after the President has signed it. The Constitution gives Congress the responsibility to negotiate trade. If Congress gives this responsibility up, then we will not know what is in the text of the TPP and will not have hearings or debate on it.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – Summer Of Our Discontent

Retired CIA Officer, now a peace and justice activist, Ray McGovern recently wrote in an article called The Moral Imperative of Activism that “This is our summer of discontent. The question we need to ask ourselves is whether that discontent will move us to action. Never in my lifetime have there been such serious challenges….” These serious challenges exist in the form of the multiple crises and the obstacles we face in overcoming them. Powerful forces are aligned to maintain the status quo and are adept at preventing disruption of it. Corporations control the political process, the courts, think tanks, the media, education and many non-profits. The vast national security apparatus monitors us and does what it can to prevent effective resistance actions through infiltration of activist groups, as was recently discovered in Washington, DC and Oklahoma.

Activist Training Webinar On The TPP

Join Public Citizen to learn about how to teach your community about Fast Track and the TPP, and how we can work together to stop it! The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a massive “free trade” agreement that isn’t really about trade. It’s now being negotiated behind closed doors and influenced by over 600 corporate advisors. If it passes, the TPP would have an impact on the food you eat, the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the cost of your medications. It would give the green light to global corporations that send jobs overseas, thus undermining the U.S. labor movement and creating a global race to the bottom. The TPP would undermine democracy worldwide and forever change the way we use the internet.

What Does #Zapatista Freedom School Have To Do With #TPP?

Do you know why the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) declared war against the Mexican Government on January 1st, 1994? Because that’s the date NAFTA got into effect without the consensus, the vote, or any possible approval by Mexican people. It got into effect even with the opposition of a vast movement across the country that US corporate media did not inform about to the US people. NAFTA in Mexico was the first “experiment” on how to do these fatal trades under the most unequal possible terms, with no protections for the workers and the environment, no enforcement rules for corporate, no sales taxes for the richest and no expiration dates. When the opposition movement was too big to fall, both the US and Mexican corporate-handled governments invented a “magic” formula to get away with whatever they wanted: “Fast Track”, meaning “in secret”.
