As A Veteran, I Refuse To Celebrate War

As a veteran who is also an antiwar activist, I find Veterans Day to be a toxic holiday. On Veterans Day, we are asked to ignore all the horrors of U.S. militarism for the “sake” of the veteran — all this despite the fact that trillions of dollars have been diverted from education, health care, infrastructure and even veteran support in order to pay for the U.S. military. That military overthrows governments, surveils the planet, covers up sexual assault, slaughters millions, and pollutes more than any other organization. Veterans Day is a not-so-subtle attempt to justify the mission of the U.S. empire by setting aside a day that demands a certain degree of reverence for those who have carried out that mission. Veterans Day is also a tool to recruit more soldiers.

Fifty years ago today, the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam protests swept the entire United States and showed that the antiwar movement was undeniably mainstream. Soldiers who had fought in Vietnam weren’t pitted against that movement — in fact, many were actually part of it. Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of the October 15, 1969 Moratorium, perhaps the most important US protest during the war against Vietnam. Millions turned out across the United States in a historic day of action.

Las Vegas-area veterans joined anti-war activists outside Nellis Air Force Base for a protest against the proposed expansion of the Nevada Test and Training Range. The approximately 25 demonstrators on Thursday were the latest to voice opposition to the U.S. Air Force’s plan to expand the 2.9-million acre range, located in rural Clark, Lincoln and Nye counties. The Air Force hopes to extend the range by 301,507 acres, the vast majority of which would be in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. The range already overlaps with about half of the 1.6 million-acre refuge, the largest wildlife refuge in the contiguous United States.

Think of America’s forever wars as a funnel between the largest and second largest federal government departments. Entering at the top of the funnel, via the Department of Defense (DOD), are poor and working-class men and women who enlist in the military, often to escape difficult economic circumstances. After being sent abroad, hundreds of thousands end up in a world of hurt and further financial distress. Their later need for disability benefits or health care—“workers’ compensation” as it’s called in the civilian world—is met, at the other end of the funnel, by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

In a recent Tweet, you claimed that “Iranians never won a war, but never lost a negotiation.” As a world citizen and a veteran of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, I have firsthand experience with the bitterness of war, and I have a few suggestions and responses for you. First, I would advise you against using the words win and winning to describe war, especially from a US perspective. American history is filled with bitter experiences of losing wars. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and even the engagement in Yemen—none of these horrifying interventions has ever reached their goals.

One of the architects of the VA MISSION Act of 2018, Roe is an ardent supporter of shifting the care of veterans from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to the private sector. H.R. 3083 will accelerate privatization of the VHA by changing the launch date of one of the most problematic parts of the VA MISSION Act—the Asset and Infrastructure Review Commission.

Sally Alice Thompson is 95 years old and she is on a hunger strike for the children, children who are victims of the U.S. government's sanctions and war mongering on the countries where they live -- Yemen, Syria, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela. She is a World War II Navy veteran, an anti-war activist and member of Veterans for Peace in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ms. Thompson has been involved in peace, and anti-nuclear issues for decades. In 1986, she walked across the United States in the Great American Peace Walk and a year later joined 200 other Americans who walked for peace from Moscow to St. Petersburg in the US-Soviet International Peace Walk.

My grandparents were used as pawns serving the US army in aiding them on the Ho Chi Minh trail. They served in The Secret War, and when the US lost the Vietnam war the Hmong were left to die in genocide. To this day Hmong veterans are not recognized by the US army. More than half of my people were wiped out through genocide. Only about a third of what once was the Hmong population are scattered in diaspora around the world. Many in the US who deal with PTSD through alcoholism, abuse, and addiction to opium.

US Veterans Attacked, Arlington West Memorial Desecrated On Memorial Day

In the early morning hours of Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, 2019, the Arlington West Memorial Santa Monica was desecrated and its veteran volunteers attacked.   The intrusion took place around 4:00 AM. The memorial was up overnight in recognition of Memorial Day. Veteran volunteers were there to monitor it throughout the evening & into the morning.  A lone male attacker was swearing at and verbally abusing the veterans as he knocked down large memorial signs. Two complete rows of crosses were demolished by him, with the crosses being strewn around the memorial site.

A case involving two US war veterans, accused of trespassing and causing damage to the perimeter fence at Shannon Airport last month, has been adjourned until 8 May next. Eighty-two-year-old Ken Mayers from New Mexico and 77-year-old Tarak Kauff from New York appeared at Ennis District Court today charged with causing criminal damage, estimated to cost €2,500, to the airport perimeter fence at Shannon Airport on 17 March last.

The pair are members of ‘US Veterans for Peace’ – an international organisation dedicated to “building a culture of peace and exposing the true costs of war.” The group has been in Ireland in recent days giving public talks on the “disrespect shown by the US military for Ireland's traditional neutrality.” They were arrested under the Air Navigation and Transport Act this morning under suspicion of breaching the airport perimeter in an attempt to reach a civilian plane carrying around 300 US soldiers.
