Wendell Berry Speaks With Bill Moyers About Social Change

Berry on the slow process of making change: well we’ve acknowledged that the problems are big, now where’s the big solution? When you ask the question what is the big answer, then you’re implying that we can impose the answer. But that’s the problem we’re in to start with, we’ve tried to impose the answers. The answers will come not from walking up to your farm and saying this is what I want and this is what I expect from you. You walk up and you say what do you need. And you commit yourself to say all right, I’m not going to do any extensive damage here until I know what it is that you are asking of me. And this can’t be hurried. This is the dreadful situation that young people are in. I think of them and I say well, the situation you’re in now is a situation that’s going to call for a lot of patience. And to be patient in an emergency is a terrible trial.

Occupy Monsanto Protest Tossed Real Money Around Congress

Some 2,000 dollar bills fluttered from the fifth-floor balcony of the Hart Senate Office Building on Thursday, falling upon activists who shouted "Monsanto Money!," while tossing piles of cash in the air and making snow angels in pools of the bills. "The government is shut down, but you still have Monsanto lobbyists engaging with congressmembers," said activist Ariel Vegosen of Occupy Monsanto, a group that regularly stages demonstrations against the controversial agriculture and biotech company. "We're here today to say that's not OK. Money shouldn't dictate how Congress makes decisions." Capitol police arrested three of the 10 activists, who wore business clothes and wigs to pose as lobbyists from the fictional "Biotechnology Industry Awards Committee." Adam Eidinger, one of those arrested, said that the tossed money would be collected by the others and used to pay bail if necessary.

200 Hundred Arrested In Washington, DC Over Immigration Inaction

Eight members of Congress plus about 200 labor leaders and immigration advocates were arrested Tuesday outside the Capitol in a protest calling for the House to take up immigration reform, which stalled after passing the Senate. Demonstrators marched to the Capitol after a rally and concert on the National Mall. Many stood or sat in the street in what organizers called a campaign of civil disobedience. Maria Elena Durazo, head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, also was arrested. "We strongly believe we could get the majority between Democrats and some Republicans to pass immigration reform," she said beforehand. Advocates held signs reading "Unite" and "Keep families together — immigration reform now." Three young boys wore shirts bearing the words, "Don't deport my dad." The Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bipartisan immigration bill in July, but it failed to gain traction in the GOP-led House and is unlikely to pass in the current session.

Explosions At New NSA Facility

The super-secret NSA Utah Data Center is suffering from a number of massive electrical jolts which, in turn, have melted hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment. According to a WSJ report, the explosions, called “arc failures,” are like “lightning” inside a computer case. The systems, built in part by firms KlingStubbins, Balfour Beatty Construction, DPR Construction and Big-D Construction Corp, are integral to the NSA’s ability to scan satellite and Internet traffic. Apparently these arc failures have hit 10 times in the last 13 months. “The failures that occurred during testing have been mitigated,” said an NSA spokesperson. “A project of this magnitude requires stringent management, oversight, and testing before the government accepts any building.” The center uses 65 megawatts of electricity or about as much needed to power 65,000 homes at a cost of $1 million per month.

Veterans Arrested At Their Own Memorial Protesting Afghan War

Nineteen military veterans and their allies were arrested Oct. 7 at New York City’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza for refusing to leave the park at the 10 pm closing time. The date marks 12 years of invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, and the arrestees were reading the names of the dead from the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Vietnam, as well as from the drone wars in Pakistan and other countries. The aims of the action, organized by Veterans For Peace members, were fourfold: Calling for an end to the 12-year war in Afghanistan. Calling for an end to all U.S. wars of aggression. Remembering all those who have fallen and been wounded by war. Standing up for our right, duty and sworn oath, to defend the Constitution and to assemble and organize

VIDEO: Acronym TV Weekly Resistance Report 009

One of the most telling poll numbers of this current moment in time is 10%. That, according to a CNN poll taken before the government shutdown, registers the lowest approval rating ever for congress. As unpopular as Congress is, a recent poll from the Brookings Institution reveals that there is something that may soon be even more unpopular: Capitalism.

This week, the five stores covered in the Resistance Report explore some of the reasons why.

Get Ready To Fight ‘Grand Bargain’ To Avoid Shut Down & Default

With plenty of evidence of Democrats' propensity to cave to Republican "hostage politics" in recent years, concerned citizens, progressive members of Congress, and advocacy groups were taking no chances on Thursday as they formed a "human-chain" outside the Capitol Building in Washington to declare their opposition to any cuts to vital social programs, including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Amid an ongoing shutdown of the federal government, members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus held a news conference and after joined hands with members of the Alliance for Retired Americans, Social Security Works and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare in order to protest the idea of a "Grand Bargain" between Democrats and Republicans that has been repeatedly floated over a series of budget battles in recent years.

Greenwald: Journalism Should Expose The Lying Of The Powerful

In this interview on BBC, journalist Glenn Greenwald describes the job of journalist as to "prevent people in power from lying to the people over whom they are ruling."  He sees the job of journalists as to "shine a light" on what government is really doing to inform the people who live in democracies. In a healthy democracy the people need to know about what the government is doing to monitor the activities of citizens. And, the more people in power abuse their power, the more they need accountability and transparency. The documents released show a broad dragnet surveillance effort by the UK and US governments of innocent citizens not involved in terrorism. Greenwald says he is in regular contact with his source, Edward Snowden. Greenwald and the Guardian has done a better job of keeping control of the NSA and UK's GCHQ spying documents than the spy agencies have done. BBC Newsnight interviews journalist Glenn Greenwald on Edward Snowden, the PRISM revelations and mass surveillance. He repeatedly warns the journalist that she should not assume that what the government tells her is true.  The interview took place on October 3, 2013.

Video Documenting Police Protest Tactics

In this ten minute video, Paul Henri-Sullivan documents NYPD tactics in crowd control.  He follows an OWS protest with his camera focused on the police. He sees how the police white shirts direct arrests as the protest gains momentum in order to weaken the protest.  The police consistently tell the crowd to keep moving and get out of the streets, but than at the direction of a white shirt, police go into the crowd and arrest people, often at the specific direction of the who to arrest.  They will often throw the person to the ground so that it becomes a spectacle arrest, one that other protesters can see in order to intimidate them, or to draw other protesters out to un-arrest the person so they can also be arrested.  Consistently targeted are men wearing dark clothes and a bandanna.  Sometimes it seems the police commanders have specific people in mind or, perhaps, know specific people due to police infiltration.  Sullivan continues to film until he finds himself under arrest as well.  As often happens, it is a minor charge that gets the protester off the street and then months later the charges are dropped.

World Bank Whistleblower Karen Hudes Reveals How The Global Elite Rule The World

Karen Hudes is a graduate of Yale Law School and she worked in the legal department of the World Bank for more than 20 years. In fact, when she was fired for blowing the whistle on corruption inside the World Bank, she held the position of Senior Counsel. She was in a unique position to see exactly how the global elite rule the world, and the information that she is now revealing to the public is absolutely stunning. According to Hudes, the elite use a very tight core of financial institutions and mega-corporations to dominate the planet. The goal is control. They want all of us enslaved to debt, they want all of our governments enslaved to debt, and they want all of our politicians addicted to the huge financial contributions that they funnel into their campaigns.

Exclusive: Flush The TPP Conversation With President Obama

President Barack Obama gave an exclusive interview to FlushTheTPP.org to discuss the massive trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The agreement, which has been negotiated for 3 and 1/2 years in secret by President Obama except for 600 corporate advisers who have put in the aggreement language that ensures the transnational corporations have more power than government's and that their profits come before the necessities of the people and the protection of the planet. In an unique approach President Obama has classified the text of the TPP. This have never been done with a trade agreement before the TPP. The TPP is the largest agreement since the WTO and will affect every aspect of your life including food, water, wages, Internet access, banking regulation and environmental laws among other areas. In fact laws like "Buy American" will be a violation because they are a trade barrier, as are laws that favor buying local or buying sustainable products.
