Democrats Try To Fix ‘Taxation Without Representation’ In DC

Democrats from the Senate and House introduced legislation on Wednesday that would make Washington, D.C., the 51st state. The bill was reintroduced in the House by Eleanor Holmes Norton, a nonvoting delegate in the House who represents D.C. In the Senate, Tom Carper (D-Delaware) reintroduced the bill with the support of over three dozen of his fellow Democrats. Norton said on Tuesday that the bill now has over 200 co-sponsors in the House. Making D.C. a state, which the Constitution grants Congress the right to do, would allow the region to have voting representation in Congress. Currently, they have one delegate in the House, Norton, who can serve on committees but cannot vote.

Made In The USA: A Co-opted Democracy That Feeds Its Own Insurrection

Washington, DC - “That is not who we are,” insists the U.S. political class after the grave events of January 6 when a mob of Trump supporters brutally invaded the Capitol here in Washington, DC, leading to the loss of five lives. An entire nation, if not the whole world, has been traumatized, unable to believe that these images came from a developed country in North America. The key questions are simple, “Why” and “How?” The answer is visible in the raw emotions on  the demonstrators’ faces, strategically veiled in the concept of “American Exceptionalism” that has done so much damage throughout the history of the country’s democracy.

#DontRentDC Trends As District Residents Brace ForMore

Washington - More right-wing demonstrations are planned in the nation's capital, and District residents are urging short-term rental hosts to keep their properties vacant in an attempt to limit the damage. The hashtag #DontRentDC is trending online following news that far-right activists are organizing more gatherings starting Jan. 16 in opposition to Joe Biden's inauguration. One such gathering is called the "Million Militia March." Thousands of Pres. Trump's supporters traveled to the nation's capital this week before storming the U.S. Capitol in a violent raid Wednesday that led to five deaths.

Trump Supporters Riot, Breach US Capitol

Washington, DC — In one of the darkest days in U.S. legislative history, Trump supporters rioted and breached the North side of the U.S. Capitol today as thousands rallied outside urging the Congress to overturn the result of the Presidential election. The Trump mob penetrated the building by force while a joint session of Congress was already in session to count the certificates of U.S. States, finalizing the votes of the Electoral College, as provided by the Constitution. Capitol police allegedly responded with teargas and a volley of live fire inside the legislative body. One woman died on the scene from a gunshot wound in her neck and three others died by “medical emergency” according to Capital Police.

Trump Is An Enemy Of Democracy

It’s time to stop mincing words about what President Donald Trump and his supporters in Congress have done to this country. With the United States Capitol breached for the first time since the British burned it in the War of 1812, we must call this what it is: an attack on America. And our leaders responsible for it must see quick and severe consequences. This is not, and never was, a dispute about the election, a misguided concern about voter fraud, or an insistence on more process. The facts have always been clear that Trump lost the election, and dozens of courts have definitively rejected any assertions to the contrary.

Trump Supporters Are Flooding Downtown Washington DC

Early on the second day of protests baselessly contesting president-elect Joe Biden’s victory, maskless Trump supporters are gathering in downtown D.C. as Congress prepares to count the Electoral College’s votes. Despite election officials across the country finding no instances of widespread fraud, the president’s supporters and far-right groups have descended on D.C. for a third time in recent months — prompting local leaders, business owners, and city residents to prepare for potentially violent demonstrations. Wednesday morning, a boarded-up downtown D.C. filled with Trump flags, MAGA hats, and some outlandish outfits as thousands gathered near the Ellipse, where President Trump will speak at 11 a.m.

Black Lives Matter DC Demands City Stop Attacks By Violent Trump Supporters

Washington — Today, Black Lives Matter DC leaders issued demands to Mayor Bowser, Deputy Chief Contee, City Council members and business owners and leaders in the District, telling them to send a clear message to racist Trump supporters planning to attack the city on January 6, 2020. “Mayor Bowser, Deputy Chief Contee and local businesses, tell the racists that they’re not welcome in our city,” said Née Née Taylor, a core organizer with Black Lives Matter DC (BLM-DC). “Earlier this month, the mayor, the police and local businesses aided and abetted white supremacists by allowing them to run rogue across our city, desecrating Black churches, violating Black Lives Matter Plaza, all while refusing to wear masks and socially distance.”

Proud Boys Vandalize Churches And Clash With Antifascists In DC

Washington DC-A night of confrontations and violent clashes followed a day-long rally of MAGA, the followers of the defeated Trump Administration. Proud Boy hate groups led roving groups of pro-Trump MAGA followers through downtown DC, looking to vent their frustration over a lost Presidential election. Proud Boys tore down Black Lives Matter signs on several churches and businesses and attempted to penetrate police lines to attack anti-fascist opposition. Confrontations began early in the day at Black Lives Matter Plaza where an anti-fascist group, Black Lives Matter Civil Rights organizations, and allied groups gathered to protect the plaza from a repeat of Proud Boy vandalism which occurred on November 7.

Neighbors Explain What Protests Against Systemic Racism Mean To Them

Demonstrators took to the D.C. streets in late May, protesting police brutality and the systemic racism Black people face. It was part of a larger movement inspired by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, but Floyd wasn’t the only name protesters chanted. They called for justice for Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and, more locally, Marqueese Alston, D’Quan Young, and others. In September, a new name was added to the list: Deon Kay. The demonstrations have taken place against the backdrop of a pandemic that has disproportionately impacted Black and Latino Americans, including in D.C.

Tear Gas For BLM, Red Carpet For MAGA Marchers

Welcome to Burn It Down with Kim Brown. Striking video footage there in Washington, DC as the klan came to town. Oh, they weren't the klan? Well, they kind of looked like the klan to me or at least the grandchildren of the klan. Trump supporters, white supremacists, Proud Boys, whatever you want to call them, took to the streets of DC to show their support for the President who is trying to steal the election. But the striking difference is that Black Lives Matter activists have been in the streets of the District of Columbia all summer long and they have been met with tear gas, with rubber bullets, with...

When Fascists Roam The Streets, Staying Home Isn’t An Option

The Million MAGA March in Washington, D.C. on November 14th has become a flashpoint about how the Left should respond to the far-Right in a post-2020 election terrain. Footage distorted to fit a narrative of unprovoked violence against conservatives, Proud Boys employing specific fighting tactics to down as many people as possible; police splitting up crowds, standing with riot shields facing only one way, conveniently absent once the Proud Boys found the antifascists. Much of the conversation, however, has centered on the conflict between showing up or staying in.

Proud Boy Attacks Send Several To Hospital In Critical Condition

Thousands of Trump supporters rallied in Washington, DC, to build popular support for a Trump-led coup. The demonstration was organized as a “Stop The Steal Rally,” which promoted far-Right conspiracies that Trump actually won the 2020 election in a landslide. Among those protesting was the far-Right street gang the Proud boys, QAnon supporters, neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic activists like Jason Kessler, Baked Alaska, Vincent James, and Jovi Val, white nationalist “Groypers” led by Unite the Right marcher Nick Fuentes, and conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones.

Black Lives Matter DC Vs Trump

Without provocation, the President and Attorney General directed their agents in the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, D.C. National Guard, and Federal Bureau of Prisons to fire tear gas, pepper spray capsules, rubber bullets and flash bombs into the crowd to shatter the peaceful gathering, forcing demonstrators to flee the area. Many peaceful demonstrators were injured, some severely, by this unprovoked attack. The President and Attorney had no legitimate basis to assault the peaceable gathering. Their professed purpose–to clear the area to permit the President to walk to a photo opportunity at a nearby church...

Arrest Police Officers Who Brutally Attacked Reuben Pegues

Bethesda MD --  The brutal arrest of high school student Reuben Pegues, a member of the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition (BACC), Saturday night during Washington DC demonstrations exposes the continuing disregard for Black Lives at all levels of our society, and the importance of the struggle to preserve the memory of African Americans in the face of obliteration by development at the Moses African Cemetery on River Road  in Bethesda. Reuben is an ardent supporter of the BACC’s multi-year battle to stop the plans by Bethesda Storage to excavate what Coalition members call “ancient Moses”...

Helicopters Over DC Protesters Broke Regulations

Two D.C. National Guard helicopters that flew low over protesters in Washington, D.C., on the night of June 1 were not properly authorized to be there — and were directed by a lieutenant colonel who was far from the scene, driving home in his car, according to an initial investigation by the D.C. National Guard. The superior officer who authorized the deployment claimed he didn’t know that the regulations required him to have higher-level approval to use the helicopters at all, and that in any case, he in no way told the lieutenant colonel that the helicopters should be used for crowd dispersal.
