The Best Protection For Students Is A Mass Movement

On March 20, the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) hosted a conversation with Cornell University student and pro-Palestinian activist Momodou Taal. Less than a week prior, Taal had filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging the new executive orders that sought to target international noncitizen students for speaking out against the genocide in Gaza. The day after this conversation, Taal was told to surrender into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. On March 31, he self-deported. In this conversation, in which Taal is interviewed by Nidaa Lafi, an organizer with PYM’s Dallas chapter, Taal shares his first-hand experience with being targeted for peacefully protesting, discusses the true function of universities today and offers wisdom on why the increasing repression against students is a sign of empire’s weakness, not its strength.

Johns Hopkins Students Met With Police Repression And Violence

On the morning of May 8, students at Johns Hopkins University launched an encampment on Keyser Quad, declaring it the Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya Liberated Zone in solidarity with the people of Gaza and in protest of the university's ongoing complicity in genocide. Within the hour, demonstrators were met with indiscriminate aggression and physical harassment by armed Johns Hopkins Police and Baltimore Police officers, resulting in the injury of two students and the destruction of personal belongings. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, which Johns Hopkins Police themselves admitted, they issued multiple threats of imminent arrests, engaging in threats and verbal harassment well outside the scope of their putative role of enforcers of public safety.

Ben-Gvir Returns To Israel After A Violent Trip To The US

The Israeli far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has wrapped up his weeklong visit to the United States. The settler leader’s trip drew protests and generated violence, but these developments didn’t stop Ben-Gvir from meeting with Republican lawmakers at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and the U.S. Capitol. Ben-Gvir has previously been convicted of supporting terrorism and inciting anti-Arab racism. Before running for office, he kept a picture of Baruch Goldstein, the Israeli religious extremist who murdered 29 Palestinian people in a Mosque, hanging in his living room.

Why Protesters Are Being Sent To For-Profit ICE Prison In Rural Louisiana

In recent weeks, students Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk, and Alireza Doroudi were abducted by ICE and are being held in ICE detention centers in rural Louisiana. Khalil’s powerful statement connects multiple realities that demonstrate how state repression is activated to support the rise of authoritarianism. That Khalil and others are being sent to detention centers in remote towns across Louisiana is not an accident. Rising authoritarianism requires a police state, and the expansion of prisons, police, and detention centers is extremely profitable. As the current U.S. government disappears people to a brutal prison camp in El Salvador, they are also moving people to rural Louisiana in attempts to disappear people within the United States borders.

Faculty Rally Nationwide For Free Speech And Free Tuition

Faculty-student pairs set up “anti-fascist office hours” at three locations on the Northwestern University campus. Faculty, students, and staff created anti-fascist art at the University of Hawaii. American Association of University Professors members combined membership drives with tabling about the critical issues facing higher education on 30 campuses. And in New York City, 4,000 people rallied to defend higher education from Trump’s attacks, chanting, “ICE took our students, we want them back!” These were a few of the 170 events on campuses across the country April 17 in the second annual Coalition for Action in Higher Education day of action, organized under the banner of “Free Higher Education.”

San Jose State University Students Protest Revocation Of Student Visas

San Jose, CA – On April 9, around 60 San Jose State students and community members gathered by the campus’s Cesar Chavez arch to protest the recent revocation of student visas by the federal government. According to San Jose State University president Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, 12 San Jose State University International students had their F-1 visas revoked. The revocations came as part of a wave of visa revocations by the federal government, most of which are student visas. As soon as the news broke, the San Jose chapter of Students for a Democratic Society called an emergency action to put forward several demands.

Judge Says Trump Can Deport Mahmoud Khalil Over His Political Beliefs

The Trump administration’s push to deport Palestine activist and former Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil is based on an accusation of “antisemitism,” according to a source who saw the government’s filing. Facing a court deadline to hand over evidence justifying Khalil’s, the Department of Homeland Security submitted a two-page memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio citing the Trump administration’s authority to expel noncitizens that have the potential to damage the foreign policy interests of the United States.

Hillel’s Empty Words

In recent years, we have seen Palestine activists protest Hillel groups on campus. Pro-Israel organizations and pundits often insist that protesting the largest Jewish student organization somehow makes the Palestine movement antisemitic, but Hillel is not exactly apolitical. In the mid-2000s, they embraced the slogan “Wherever we stand, we stand with Israel,” they sponsor the Birthright program, and they forbid campus Hillels from partnering with anti-Zionist groups. Earlier this year, Yale Hillel hosted former Israeli solider and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, which inevitably led to protest. At an event at Harvard Business School later he joked that he would give exploding pagers to protestors, alluding to the Israeli attack on Lebanon that killed dozens of people and injured thousands.

Trump Administration Revokes Hundreds Of Student Visas

The Trump administration has reportedly revoked hundreds of student visas, amid a widening crackdown on the U.S. Palestine movement. In recent days, dozens of schools have announced that draconian measures by the Trump administration have targeted some of their students. The list includes UC Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, Ohio State, Minnesota State University, the University of Kentucky, Northeastern, and Harvard. Last month Secretary of State Marco Rubio guessed that he had revoked about 300 visas since arriving in office. “I don’t know actually if it’s primarily student visas,” Rubio told reporters.

More Than 1,800 Academics Say They Will Boycott Columbia

Near the end of March, Gary Wilder, a professor of anthropology at the City University of New York, sent an email about his decision to decline attending a conference at Columbia University, explaining he was doing so because Columbia is “actively colluding with the U.S. government’s project to destroy higher education and criminalize dissent.” “A boycott is one of the few instruments available to the academic community through which to censure Columbia,” Wilder wrote to many of those involved in the gathering. Wilder is one of more than 1,800 academics and 50 organizations who have joined a quickly expanding boycott of Columbia, which has been at the center of U.S. state and political repression surrounding activism for Palestinian liberation.

Four Jewish pro-Palestinian demonstrators chained themselves to the gate near St. Paul’s Chapel early Wednesday afternoon in support of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, SIPA ’24, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on March 8. A new group of protesters tethered themselves to the Earl Hall gates later that afternoon. A Wednesday post from Columbia’s chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace cites a March 10 report from the Forward in which Ross Glick, former leader of Betar, a self-described “bold Zionist movement,” said he visited Washington, D.C. to meet with officials about Khalil.

Columbia Students Fight Back Against Deportation Threats

Hundreds of Columbia students gathered frantically on Tuesday, March 25 in a cathedral near campus for an emergency union meeting, debating how to respond against what they described as the university administration’s “concessions to fascism.” The uproar ignited on March 9, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian graduate and student activist Mahmoud Khalil at his home without a judicial warrant. Federal authorities claimed to revoke Khalil’s green card from his involvement in pro-Palestine campus protests since Israel’s war on Gaza.

A federal judge in New Jersey will soon issue a ruling on where the deportation case of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student who led the student encampment at Columbia University last year, can be litigated. On March 8, Khalil was abducted in New York by agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) who told him his lawful permanent residency status had been “revoked.” He is now languishing in a notorious Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) jail in Louisiana, more than 1,000 miles from his U.S. citizen wife who is over eight months pregnant, while U.S. District Judge Michael E. Farbiarz decides where his case will be heard. Khalil has been charged with no crime.

Jacksonville SDS Rallies Against Israeli Soldiers On Campus

Jacksonville, FL – On March 27, Jacksonville Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) rallied dozens of students to protest a speaking event which brought two Israeli occupation forces (IOF) troops to the University of North Florida. The soldiers were on campus to justify their war crimes in Gaza during the first wave of the accelerated genocide. The Jacksonville Palestine Solidarity Network (JPSN) co-sponsored the protest, and several other student and community organizations were in attendance. The rally took place outside the UNF Student Union, where the speaking event was being held.
