World Social Forum’s 2024 Statement On Palestine

Katmandou, Nepal 2024 - Today, on February 21st, we conclude the successful 16th session of the World Social Forum in Nepal. We express our gratitude to the organizing committee, participants, and volunteers whose efforts led to this success. We take pride in the strong solidarity shown towards the Palestinian cause by all participants and condemn the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel in Gaza for over four months. As we collectively reflect on the thousands of lives lost in Gaza, we cannot ignore the long history of crimes against the Palestinian people dating back to the Al Nakba in 1948. We assert that Israel has become a rogue state, enabled by global hegemonic forces.

United We Dream And Allies Demand Ceasefire And Immigrant Protections

Last week, I joined an action hosted by United We Dream in DC’s Capitol Hill. We demanded a ceasefire now in Gaza and permanent protections for immigrants who have made the United States our home. This action was a response to Senate leaders proposing a bill earlier this month that would fund Israel’s assault on Gaza, the war on Ukraine, more militarization in the Indo-Pacific, and the denial, deportations, and detentions of migrants at the US-Mexico border. Essentially more taxpayer dollars for war and border militarization.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 141: Israel Attacks Civilian Shelter

An Israeli airstrike just hit Rafah, killing seven people, showing that even Rafah, where the majority of displaced Palestinians are sheltering, is no longer safe. The attack comes following a bloody night where Israeli forces attacked a building in Deir el-Balah, where more than 120 people were sheltering. At least 24 Palestinians were killed in the attacks, the majority of whom were women and children. “You can see for yourself the bodies. All the dead were women and children. There is no peaceful place for us to go. We were all displaced, we’ve all lost our homes. Where do you want us to go?

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 138: US Vetoes Another Ceasefire Resolution

The U.S. vetoed an Arab-backed resolution in the UN Security Council on Tuesday, which called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This is the fourth time Washington has used its power to block the Security Council from bringing an end to the Israeli war on Gaza since October. The resolution was put to vote by Algeria despite the U.S. being expected to strike it down. The U.S. ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that Washington was “concerned” the resolution would jeopardize efforts ushered by Egypt and Qatar to bring a deal to pause the fighting and exchange hostages between Israel and Hamas movement.

Indian Port Workers Refuse To Handle Military Cargo Bound For Israel

The Water Transport Workers Federation of India, which represents 3,500 workers in 11 major ports across the country, has declared its refusal to load or unload any “weaponized cargoes” intended for use in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. This includes any cargo coming from Israel “or any other country which could handle military equipment and its allied cargo for war in Palestine”. “The recent attack of Israel on Gaza plunging thousands of Palestinians into immense suffering and loss. Women and children have been blown to pieces in the war. Parents were unable to recognize their children killed in bombings which were exploding everywhere,” the union said in a statement dated February 14.

US Threatens To Veto New Ceasefire Resolution At UN Security Council

US is threatening to veto a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza at the UN Security Council as the US continues to provide political cover for the Israeli massacre of Palestinians. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement that if the resolution, which is being drafted by Algeria, was brought to a vote, it would not be adopted. Thomas-Greenfield justified US opposition to a ceasefire by pointing to US efforts to push for a new hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vetoed hostage talks last week, and Qatar, the mediator of the negotiations, said Saturday that things were not looking “promising.”

New National Labor Network Formed To Expand Support For A Ceasefire

Seven national unions and over two hundred local unions today announce the formation of the National Labor Network for Ceasefire (NLNC) to “end the death and devastation” in the Middle East, and to expand support for the ceasefire among unions nationally. Together, unions calling for a ceasefire represent over 9 million union members – more than half the labor movement in the United States. The NLNC launch comes on the heels of a statement calling for a ceasefire released by the AFL-CIO last week - the largest federation of unions in the United States. The NLNC is launching their website (laborforceasefire.org) with a call for unions and union members to sign the ceasefire letter to continue expanding labor’s ceasefire movement.

A dire situation at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis is unfolding as Israel continues its raid on the largest functioning medical facility remaining in the Gaza Strip.  “We are forced to transfer all the patients and the wounded to the hospital’s old building,” Dr. Nahed Abu Taima, the Director of the Nasser Medical Complex told Al Jazeera.  “Electric power was cut off from the entire medical complex,” he continued, describing how the raid is impacting the 450 patients at the hospital, many of whom are in critical condition. “Many patients in ICUs and those on oxygen supply, and also those on dialysis are left fighting for their lives.”

A growing coalition of peace & justice organizations from Northern California are collaborating to nonviolently impede the U.S. role in Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.  The newly formed campaign, called "Shut Down Travis," is organizing regular actions to peacefully impede "business as usual” at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA, where U.S. weapons are transported to Israel. It began on December 28, when activists, working together, successfully closed down all 4 gates for 1-4 hours ea. at Travis AFB.  NO US WEAPONS for GENOCIDE!  14 activists were ultimately arrested at two gates, and later cited and released in the afternoon, with citations to appear in Fairfield court for a February 23 arraignment.

AFL-CIO’s Ceasefire Call Shows Power Of The Movement For Palestine

On Thursday, the AFL-CIO called for a ceasefire in Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza. The statement came after months of silence, during which the largest union federation in the United States had gone as far as to force a Washington-based labor council to remove its ceasefire resolution. The AFL-CIO’s call shows that the movement for Palestine and rank-and-file ceasefire organizing has forced labor to shift its position on the assault — and this movement must go further. The AFL-CIO’s statement comes after more than 28,000 Palestinians — 40 percent of whom are children — have been killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

The United States has warned that it will not support an “unplanned” military operation in Rafah without due consideration for displaced Palestinians who are sheltering there. “We haven’t seen any plans that would convince us that they [the Israeli military] is about to, or imminently going to conduct any major operations in Rafah,” said U.S. national security spokesperson John Kirby, addressing a White House Press Conference on Thursday. “More than one million Palestinians are sheltering in and around Rafah,” he continued. “The Israeli military has a special obligation as they conduct operations there or anywhere else to make sure that they’re factoring in protection for innocent civilian life.”

US Anti-War Activists Confront Senators Over Support For Israel

On February 7, activists with feminist anti-war group CODEPINK confronted several US Senators who have been doubling down on their support for Israel throughout the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip. “Killing Hamas makes Israel safe,” said Florida Senator Ted Cruz to an activist who told him that “the war does not make Jews safer.” Cruz has received over one million dollars from the pro-Israel lobby since 1990, receiving USD 489,419 from 2019 to 2024. Cruz’s top pro-Israel Political Action Committee (PAC) donors are the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Republican Jewish Coalition. “Killing 30,000 civilians doesn’t make anyone safe,” the activist responds.

A potential deal between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movements could silence the guns in the Gaza Strip for a period of four and half months, paving the way to a permanent ceasefire. On Tuesday evening, Hamas submitted a long-awaited response to an Israeli proposal brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the CIA in Paris last week, in which Tel Aviv suggested a 45-day pause of fighting in Gaza during which Hamas will release 35 Israeli captives in return for 4,000 Palestinian prisoners. According to Al-Jazeera, Hamas’ answer to the truce framework affirmed the movement’s position to reach a permanent ceasefire and end the Israeli aggression in Gaza.

Resistance Says No Deal Without Permanent Ceasefire

Negotiations are taking place over a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a complete withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces, sources told Al Mayadeen on Sunday. The stipulations of the agreement being drawn up include the issues of the ceasefire, withdrawal, prisoner exchange, reconstruction, displaced people, the entry of aid, and the lifting of the siege imposed on Gaza. Intelligence obtained by Al Mayadeen indicates that the Paris Agreement touched on the prisoner exchange but completely neglected the ceasefire and the withdrawal from Gaza, whereas the Resistance’s agreement highlights those issues as pivotal.

Hamas Presents Truce Deal, Demands Full Israeli Withdrawal From Gaza

Hamas, on 6 February, responded to a ceasefire offer presented by Qatari and Egyptian mediators with a counterproposal that calls for a 135-day truce that includes a three-step prisoner exchange process, the cessation of all military operations by the warring sides, the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the unrestrained entry of humanitarian aid to the strip, and an end to violent settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque. "This agreement aims to stop mutual military operations between the parties, reach a complete and sustainable calm, exchange prisoners between the two parties, end the siege on Gaza, rebuild, return residents and displaced people to their homes, and provide shelter and relief for all residents in all areas of the Gaza Strip," the Hamas statement reads.
